MTG Deck Builder

The Virtuous Kitsune

I absolutely love white, Eight-and-a-Half-Tails' ability, and his lore, so I decided to use him for my commander.

Note: the sideboard is to be used in one-versus-one, as per the French EDH rules.

← Serra Ascendant, Sensei's Divining Top, Sol Ring ←

If you haven't read his lore, I highly suggest it.

The main theme is...

Pillowfort enchantments! Eight-and-a-Half-Tails' ability makes it quite hard to take damage or suffer negative effects, barring board wipes. Most other cards synchronize with this, eventually making my army unstoppable!

... with these subthemes:

  1. Lifegain — Baneslayer Angel , Felidar Sovereign , Serra Ascendant , Suture Priest , Sword of Light and Shadow , True Conviction

  2. Taxation — Also in line with pillowfort: Ghostly Prison , Sphere of Safety , (semi-taxation: Karmic Justice )

  3. Resurrection — Emeria, Sun Titan , Sword of Light and Shadow , Faith's Reward , Replenish (semi-resurrection: Mistveil Plains + a shuffle effect)

  4. Board wipes — Ninetales is weak to board wipes, as are most generals, but in the right circumstances, a targeted wipe can win you the game. Of course, if you've ulted with Elspeth, any of the wipes should win you the game. If not, with Faith's Reward , you'll be at an extremely favorable position to win in the next few turns as your opponents scramble to reestablish board positions. An Armageddon can go in your favor with Flagstones of Trokair and Endless Horizons , giving you a head start on reestablishing your mana base.

  5. Duplicant is necessary against things like Iona, Shield of Emeria , but is also useful against Avacyn, Angel of Hope , Eldrazi, or just any hard-to-remove creature. It can be tutored with Enlightened Tutor , which is super nice!

  6. If you or your opponents use All Is Dust , turn their lands white with Ninetales for a minigeddon! :)

  1. This is not a voltron strategy, since I run ONE aura and basically one piece of "voltron" equipment (Sword of Light and Shadow).

  2. The deck is weak to board wipes, but so are most decks. Faith's Reward , Replenish , Avacyn, and Elspeth help somewhat with that.

  3. The basic strategy is to pillowfort, so you want to slowly build up your board state. Too many overwhelming creatures and enchantments will scare your opponents into swinging at you (which will probably happen game two!), which is not what we want at all! An early Ghostly Prison and Sphere of Safety will get a bunch of aggression off you, but beware enchantment hate!

  4. Don't cast Ninetales until turn 5 or so. You want AT LEAST three open mana (only one has to be white) to protect Ninetales from spot removal.

Thanks for reading! Feedback is always welcome! And remember...

EDH with friends! — May 8, 2013

The first game was against a Phelddagrif deck (not a group-hug deck, just being sneaky and using it for Bant colors!). I resolved an Elspeth ult on turn 9, but he didn't give up! I kept drawing useless things, like more lands and Sensei's Divining Top while repeatedly swinging with my Archon equipped with a sword -- and nothing in the graveyard, of course, since I had resolved Elspeth's ult early. After getting him to 2 life, he combo'd out and swung for 46 damage (I was at 44 because of Soul Warden)! I only had two blockers at the time, but I managed to only take 42 damage, leaving me at 2. I swung again for the win, but it was so close!

He then brought out an Omnath deck, which beat me pretty badly on the first go. He got really big really fast, and then he was made hexproof so I couldn't Condemn him. Then my friend topdecked a Green Sun's Zenith and fetched a guy who gave trample, so it was all over. Eep.

Then we played multiplayer with a guy with a Norin the Wary + Goblin commander deck. His was really annoying, what with Warp World , Confusion in the Ranks , and lots of coin-flipping cards, but it was still pretty fun! I won easily because I got Elesh Norn and Serra Avatar on my post-Warp board, basically killing everyone's creatures and making it nearly impossible for them to resolve their commanders.

We couldn't finish the last game before the store closed, but it was quite fun! I had the lowest life total, but I managed to screw with my Omnath friend's All Is Dust by making 7 of his lands white before Ninetails went down! :D

You could consider Rootborn Defenses to deal with board wipes, as well as to combo with your own later on.

Hi sylvanica,

thank you for your suggestions on my Protection Action.

Sadly i cant provide so many suggestions for your Deck, but one thing i saw is that the overall cmc of your Deck is with almost 4 really high. And on top of that you run many strategies at once, like Lifegain, Pillowfort and a Recusion sub-theme. Maybe you should focus on one of these things.

For Lifegain i would add Soul Warden , Soul's Attendant , Rhox Faithmender , Hallow

For Pillowfort i would add Norn's Annex , Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker
