The Ultimate guide to Lin Sivvi Rebels ($5 core)

Commander / EDH Mono-White

Zuese

Maybeboard

TL/DR:

building rebel tribal can be done for very little money. The base rebels are less then $5 on TCG player. Just combine that with mana rocks and a bunch of bulk white splashy rares and the deck you build is surprisingly decent. The strength of rebels is how consistent rebels can be if you just draw lands and dump all of your mana into it every turn

The deck I have here is my personal upgraded version.

UPDATE:

Introduction

Rebel tribal is a budget-friendly deck that has quickly become one of my favorite decks ever. The feeling of being outclassed by everybody at the table and then pulling something out of your hat to win is something that can not be beat. I believe Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero is one of the most underrated toolbox commanders. while she may not be tier 1, she will surely surprise and win games out of no where.

Cheap

The core rebel package is cheap, as in all the rebels (changelings included) came up to about $5 when I put it into TCGplayer. all you need to do is throw in plains, mana rocks and a bunch of big white bulk rares and you have a pretty solid deck.

Easy and flexable ways to build

ANY white card you like or never get the chance to use can go in this deck with ease. Some cards that I put in here for that reason are Crovax, Ascendant Hero, Comeuppance, Martyr's Bond and Akroma, Angel of Wrath

As long as you have the Rebels package and plenty of mana, you can fill the rest of the deck with whatever you want to. Like seriously I have Akroma, Angel of Wrath in my version of the deck not because it adds very much to the deck, but because I like the original Art. Also in my head-cannon she seems to be the perfect angel for the rag-tag underdogs that are the rebels.

Card Advantage

The way Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero plays is really cool. Lin Sivvi is a mana dump, encouraging you to use her ability every turn, and most rebels you can grab have abilities similar. Exp. Ramosian Captain, Ramosian Lieutenant, Ramosian Revivalist. This means that your hand starts filling up with cards. The problem with mono white commanders has always been their lack of way to get card advantage. Lin Sivvi is a card advantage machine, but you need a TON of mana.

A easy to understand and repeatable win condition

Most if not all toolbox commanders degenerate into the the same strategy and Lin Sivvi is no different, though it takes a while to set up. The play pattern is simple:

  1. Play commander
  2. Right before your turn grab rebels with Lin Sivvi.
  3. Play a land on your turn, maybe a mana rock and pass.
  4. Repeat step 1 and 2 until you get a bunch of rebels and mana.
  5. play Mirror Entity and swing for probably lethal.

This is the way you will win most games, but like i said it is really slow. some people will see it coming . this leads me to my next point...

Rebels Kinda Suck

Yes this is a pro. When all your rebels are 1/1s, 1/2s, 1/3s and 2/2s, you do not look very threatening. Use this to politic your way into not being the target.

WARNING! NEVER LIE! NEVER SAY "How am I going to kill you with a bunch of little dudes?" and then proceed to kill them with a bunch of buffed up dudes. This is a sure fire way to get targeted first every time you bring this deck out.

But Don't correct them if they falsely assume you are not a threat.

No one knows what Rebels do

unless your friends were playing when rebels were part of a standard overpowered deck: (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=sideboard/feature/20030617a) (#freelinsivvi). I doubt they even know rebel tribal exist, let alone the strength and weaknesses of the deck. This will work be advantageous for your first couple games, but don't get too comfortable. The good players will start to figure out what you are doing and when that happens, you will have to work harder for the win.

The Romosians

Ramosian Captain, Ramosian Lieutenant, Ramosian Sergeant make up a cool core of rebels, get enough mana and these guys will allow you to double or triple your rate of rebel tutoring. I also really like the symmetry and flavor of the cards, Ramosian Captain looks protically cool with her eyepatch and flowy claok.

Ramosian Revivalist is an OK card too, though I never really see it shine, might want to leave this one out.

Toolbox

We have many rebels that do a lot of really neat things. So what we can do is fill our deck with cards that synergize with specific rebels, Draw and play those cards then tutor up the appropriate rebel. This is my favorite thing about this deck, how the combination of normally mediocre cards and rebels can be really interesting and cool. I will get to all the little combos later, but take Pariah's Shield and Cho-Manno, Revolutionary for example. Cho-manno is an OK card, but equip it to the Pariahs shield and it becomes silly.

A list of some of the tools at our disposal:

  1. Whipcorder is a great little card that helps you with your devotion and can tap down pesky creatures.
  2. Bound in Silence is a rebel permanent card, So can get tutored up with our commander and attached to a creature we want pacified. Pretty cool right?
  3. Changeling Hero can protect a creature (Probably lin Sivvi) from a board wipe, also is a neat combo with Twilight Shepherd.
  4. Reveille Squad allows us to deter attacks and also untap our Commander or Ramosians to get more Value.
  5. Rappelling Scouts is a way of dealing with any type of flyers and Thermal Glider and Nightwind Glider are ways of blocking big demons and dragons.
  6. What if I told you Rebels has 2 cards that hate on 20% of the field. Well Lawbringer and Lightbringer, are our 2 very specific hate cards. We can get, them sac-em, shuffle them back in to use again.Thousand-Year Elixir works quite will with most of this deck but especially for the bringers. I have thought of running Distorting Lens for the bringers as well.
  7. WE HAVE AN INFINITE COMBO! in rebels... that we can tutor up... Outrider en-Kor + Task Force allows you to get an infinitely big butt Task force. attack with it and use Condemn and you will realize why we have Condemn in here instead of Swords to Plowshares
  8. Children of Korlis is a pretty great card that you can use to regain some life, shuffle back in with your commander, and get back again on the same turn to get double (or infinite if you have enoughg mana) the life back we have lost that turn. Pretty sweet.
  9. Jhovall Queen is there if you need a 4/7 vigilance for some reason.

You can add or subtract any of those cards. There are also plenty of rebels that I do not include like Riftmarked Knight that can be added if you desire.

Rebel Tactics

Pious Warrior, Defiant Vanguard, and Shield Dancer might be my favorite cards ever. Lets say your oponent is attacking with a Master of Cruelties, Have lin sivvi pull out Defiant Vanguard and be filled with glee as you remove a horrible threat. Opponent swinging with a 40/40 without trample? tutor up Pious Warrior and laugh to your hearts content. I have not used Shield Dancer to great effect but there might come a day she is useful, and if worst come to worst you can just not tutor for her.

  • Surprisingly resilient

Given enough time and mana rebels can come back from almost anything except malicious graveyard hate. the Changeling Hero + Twilight Shepherd has led me too some long games where I just keep staying in the game.

We are still playing mono white

We will have very little ways of dealing with things like combo decks, So if your meta is rather spicy and comboy, this deck may not be the best choice for you.

We do not have very much card draw, so if you are looking for a specific answer that is not covered by rebels, you are stuck to top decking.

NEED MORE MANA

We Need lots of mana and without natural mana ramp in white we have to rely on mana rocks or cards like Knight of the White Orchid or Weathered Wayfarer, but they are not rebels and Wayfarer is $14. You can really never have enough mana in Lin-Sivvi, So if you want to include these, Please do.

Hard to keep them guessing

Rebels is kinda easy to figure out once you have played against it a couple times. once you kill them with an army of 12/12s with Mirror Entity they will probably work towards making sure that never happens again. Same thing goes with most "surprise cards" in this deck. the challange will be figuring out how to win when this happens. and that is really fun

YES IT IS KINDA WEAK

Maybe there is a version of this deck with only mana rocks and removal that can compete with really good decks. But this version is not that. If you are looking to win games against really good decks you might want to stay away from this build. When I have competed against the REALLY good decks , the main way I win is when they are too busy dealing with each other to worry about my army of little rebels.

The other Stuff

So now that we have the rebels cleared up, What does the rest of our deck look like?

  • Help the rebels

We have some cards that make rebels a lot better.

  1. Thousand-Year Elixir is so good in this deck it makes my eyes bleed. basically with this and lots of mana we can go from a lonly Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero, to a Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero, into a Ramosian Sergeant into a Ramosian Lieutenant into Ramosian Captain into Defiant Vanguard into your choice of 2 more rebels
  2. Swiftfoot Boots for equipping up commander.
  3. Grand Abolisher to protect your rebels in attack.
  4. Glory is surprisingly good way to get your rebels past a bunch of blockers.
  5. Stonecloaker is primarily here for graveyard hate, bounce itself for infinite graveyard exiling. can be used to protect a rebel
  6. Odric, Master Tactician is a pretty not bad card that can win you some games.
  7. Pariah's Shield combos well with Cho-Manno, Revolutionary
  8. Elspeth, Sun's Champion is Just plain good an the -3 misses most rebels.

Basically any powerful white rare that helps with a go-wide strategy will probably go good in a deck like this.

  • Mana the Rebels

a Lot of mana rocks are important. the mana rocks I have are

  1. Mind Stone
  2. Hedron Archive
  3. Dreamstone Hedron
  4. Everflowing Chalice
  5. Worn Powerstone
  6. Sol Ring

Some Land grabbers are:

  1. Wayfarer's Bauble
  2. Armillary Sphere
  3. Journeyer's Kite (which I think works pretty well if you have spare mana from Lin-sivvi) also the coice beetween this and Thaumatic Compass   is yours, though I kind of like kite because it does not have to flip at 7 lands

Pearl Medallion can probably be replaced with anything, seeing as it does not help for mana with lin Sivvi activations

This deck can be built cheap, but like every deck can be made really good with a bit of money. Caged Sun and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx are two cards that if you draw and play, and if they stick. will probably win you the game. you may want to consider running Expedition Map to grab Nykthos

  • Buff the Rebels

If Mirror Entity is unavailable for some reason we have some other cards that are really good with a bunch of creatures

  1. Jazal Goldmane can really get there when mirror entity is unavalible
  2. Coat of Arms is good but $10
  3. Cathars' Crusade is a broken card that of course we will run
  4. Crovax, Ascendant Hero Can be pretty OK sometimes I guess

There are many other budget and non budget options for this category. pick your favorites.

  • Card draw and recursion the Rebels

White does not have much card draw, but like I said, we do not really need it. We can still add a few.

  1. Mentor of the Meek works really well in this deck
  2. Skullclamp is just good, and can be combined with some rebels to make Lin sivvis ability say ",draw 2 cards" or", draw 4 cards " with Ramosian Sergeant

  3. Marshal's Anthem is pretty alright sometimes

  4. Sun Titan is no Joke
  5. Twilight Shepherd is good and combo's well with Changeling Hero

Use these as you like, though I think you are heavily incentivized to include Twilight Shepherd.

  • Removal

We have some already in rebels but if we need more we have:

  1. Oblivion Ring
  2. Condemn but if you have this in your hand you should really go for the Task Force + Outrider en-Kor combo
  3. Return to Dust we could probably use some more artifact and Enchantment hate, but that is easily doable.

Really only Condemn is the only one I would say is a auto include.

  • Board Wipes

I have 6 here, more or less per your own preference.

  1. Austere Command
  2. Hallowed Burial anything that shuffles back in is pretty good
  3. Terminus
  4. Martial Coup can probably be removed and replaced with something else
  5. Mass Calcify Hilarious when it goes off

Board wipes are good, Remember that with Lin Sivvi, putting cards on the bottom of your deck is better then the graveyard. We can recover from the graveyard, but that mana per rebel back in your deck hurts.

  • Land

Very Flexible here

  1. Emeria, The Sky Ruin is pretty good since we are running *29 plains.
  2. Karoo might not be the best, I will leave that up to you.
  3. Secluded Steppe and Drifting Meadow for cycling
  4. Temple of the False God is Okay but not great don't want it in your opening hand
  5. Arcane Lighthouse Is pretty alright, but rarely do I take advantage of it.

You can run with just basic plains. No need for all the extra lands if you are on a budget.

  • The Rest of the Junk

These are the cards that can probably be replaced, but this deck has a lot of room for cards like these:

  1. Storm Herd is hilarious and combos well with Mirror Entity.
  2. Akroma, Angel of Wrath is just preference like I said before.
  3. Martyr's Bond is a card that if you can pull off, can really stranggle a board, works well with Lin Sivvi and Children of Korlis.

Comeuppance

This is one of my favorite cards in all of magic, it is a card that has the potential to win you every game, or Just sit dead in your hand for the game. Which is perfect for this deck. It is a pet card that I try to fit in every deck I can simply because it punishes your opponent for having the audacity to try to win the game. I love it more then anything else in the world.

Other cards that you can put in that are options to consider

  • Alternate Rebels that could be in this deck.

There are some rebels that can slot in here, some are good, some are BAD.

  1. Cho-Arrim Bruiser is something I really consider putting in over Jhovall Queen and as I type this I am having a hard time thinking of a reason not to.
  2. Ballista Squad Might actually be pretty good, but It seems like a huge mana sink.(Which we have enough mana for).
  3. The only reason I do not have Defiant Falcon in here is because I like the Ramosian symmetry same with Amrou Scout.
  4. Zealot il-Vec is a bit too insignificant for me, If you think it is good go ahead and throw it in.
  5. Aven Riftwatcheris more small effects.
  6. Ramosian Commander is not relevant, not really any things to grab.
  7. Knight of the Holy Nimbus, eh, its cool, still not something I want.
  8. Ramosian Sky Marshal is a flyer, but is alot of mana.
  9. Amrou Seekers is meh.
  10. Blade of the Sixth Pride is meh-.
  11. Riftmarked Knight is meh+.
  12. Jhovall Rider, more meh.
  13. Sword Dancer effect kinda sucks.
  14. Errant Doomsayers. " target creature that does not matter"
  15. Mercenary Informer. For your sick Rebel/Mercenary tribal deck.
  16. Steadfast Guard is a card that sucks, but it could be worst.
  17. Fresh Volunteers, it got worst
  18. and also if your playgroup allows you to stray from color identity rules, put in Big Game Hunter.

There are other rebels, but I do not think they matter.

  • Cards that are not to expensive that you can add

Some of these may even go into my deck eventually.

  1. Burnished Hart is a card that should probably be in the deck
  2. Sword of the Animist is really good and should probably be put in
  3. Distorting Lens makes Lightbringer and Lawbringer insane
  4. Spirit Bonds is a card I like a bunch, could easily lot in this deck.
  5. Kindred Boon is good, and if you get it on Lin Sivvi you can probably recover from any board wipe.
  6. Knight of the White Orchid is good ramp that is not too hard on the wallet
  7. Emeria Shepherd is a an ok cheap big rare that you can throw in.
  8. Felidar Sovereign is not too bad. if you have one lying around you can throw it in.
  9. White Sun's Zenith is a nice win condition if you need one.
  10. Harsh Mercy is a nice-ish board wipe for any tribal deck.
  11. Spear of Heliodis not bad, but the condition makes me hesitant.

There are probably many more cards, but these are the ones I considered when building my version.

  • Expensive cards

Cards that would probably be good but I do not have because of money

  1. Weathered Wayfarer is a good card that I would put in if I have a copy
  2. Retribution of the Meek I wish I had a copy to go in here.
  3. Stoneforge Mystic can get your nice artifacts like Skullclamp or Pariah's Shield or any other card expensive equipment in this list.
  4. Gauntlet of Power is caged sun 2.0 in this deck
  5. Coat of Arms is a card I have in the main list. But i though I would put it here because it is exspensive.
  6. Sensei's Divining Top tap lin Sivvi's for , fail to find, and get some sweet shuffl value.
  7. I had Door of Destinies in the original list, but took it out because we do not cast.
  8. Extraplanar Lens is always good.
  9. Mind's Eye will help with the card draw issue
  10. Rings of Brighthearth if you have it, would probably go good in this one.
  11. Land Tax is never a bad card.
  12. Crackdown makes me happy.
  13. Herald's Horn is pretty good in most deck, but in rebels we do not cast and we do not really want them in our hand.
  14. Teferi's Protection is never a bad card to have.
  15. Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite is like a better Crovax, Ascendant Hero for 1 more mana.

Conclusion and Thanks

So there we have it. Lin Sivvi rebels is really fun and not that expansive to build if you do it right. I hope you enjoyed this little project of mine.

It may not seem Like much but this deck list in description is a huge accomplishment for me. I am not a good Writer and typer but want to get better, and doing things like this really make me feel like I am getting closer to my goal of not sucking.

Thanks so much for Reading and if you have any suggestions or Ideas please leave them down below.
