I have had the most success at my local FNM during the RTR-THS Standard playing either PT 2015: Alex Sittner - "No Limit Soldiers" or my custom mono-white variant, The Triumphant Soldiers of Urd - WW M15. Granted, I started playing Magic during BNG, so I haven't played a wide variety of decks. But I've come to love aggro, and I loved those two decks.
Although I am building The Abzan Supremacy Reloaded to partake in the wedge-set fun and games, I am drawn back to the concept of casting Obelisk of Urd on turn 3 and crushing skulls.
So, here we are!
While the deck is losing some Battalion weenies, Mutavault, Boros Charm and Sacred Foundry, this iteration of the deck brings with it more Heroic creatures and some sound replacements. I believe that build this will actually be stronger, as the losses I would get in the past were mainly due to not having enough late-game presence. I am very excited to pilot this deck!
On to the cards!
The Creatures
- Ajani's Pridemate: I initially went with nothing but 1-drops, but this cat's synergy with Wind-Scarred Crag and Radiant Fountain couldn't be passed up, especially when an Obelisk isn't top-decking.
- Akroan Crusader : Heroic; creates a 1/1 Soldier token when a spell is cast on him. Double that if the spell is Launch the Fleet
- Akroan Skyguard : My second 2-drop. The deck needed some evasion, so why not make it heroic?
- Favored Hoplite : Heroic; gets a +1/+1 counter when a spell is cast on him, along with all damage being prevented that turn.
- Herald of Anafenza: An exciting addition from Khans of Tarkir. His Outlast ability will stack counters onto him and add a 1/1 Warrior token onto the battlefield. If it were a Soldier token, this card would be broken.
- Satyr Hoplite : Heroic; gets a +1/+1 counter when a spell is cast on him.
- Soldier of the Pantheon: An all-star in the Khan's Standard. Why? Three words: Protection. From. Mutlicolored. Also has synergy with Ajani's Pridemate.
The Spells
- Obelisk of Urd: The reason we're doing this, folks. Magical Christmasland is not a dream; this card can see play as early as turn 3. Woe be unto your opponent when you get a nut draw.
- Raise the Alarm: Drop two Soldier tokens on your opponent's end step. It's such a good feeling.
- Launch the Fleet: This is the best deck for this card, ever. Drop a Soldier token for each attacking creature. Make sure you target the Heroic ones first! :D
- Coordinated Assault : +1/+0 and first strike for two targets, preferably Heroic targets.
- Trumpet Blast : +2/+0 for all attacking creatures. This will end games, even without an Obelisk or Spear on the field.
- Defiant Strike: Provide card draw for when the deck stalls.
- Spear of Heliod: Why not have one more anthem? And, if you have the mana open, destroy a creature of theirs that dealt you damage.
The Sideboard
- Banishing Light: Removal for all those fatties being carted out in Khans. And, of course, our old nemesis Courser of Kruphix.
- Brimaz, King of Oreskos: In case we need backup against heavy removal decks.
- Circle of Flame : Brought in against other weenie or token decks (I'm looking at the two of you, Goblin Rabblemaster and Master of Waves!) I also expect a handful of Warriors tribal decks to spring up. Let's make them regret not including Chief of the Scale!
- Gods Willing : Brought in for removal protection and for pushing damage through. And, it'll trigger heroics.
- Return to the Ranks : Creature replenishment after board wipes.
- Wind-Scarred Crag: Just in case we have to bring on both Banishing Light and Brimaz.
