B/G Prison. Sisters of Stone Death

Commander / EDH BG (Golgari) Midrange Multiplayer

GardeNoir

EDH is a format of politics, of multiplayer alongside single player, and crazy, chaotic decks that with the right pilot, can still be effective and fun on a budget. In this series, I like to look at seemingly underwhelming and severely underplayed commanders that can still be good and fun with the right deck! Turn your friends heads at the table, and surprise them with a cheap deck that still hits well!

Today, it's Sisters of Stone Death, currently the 15th most played Golgari commander (of 20) with a 1.06% pick as the commander, and 3.47% inclusion in all strategies.

Now this beautiful gorgon is usually sitting at the helm of an underwhelming but flavorful Gorgon-'tribal' deck that gets a few good plays, but ultimately doesn't bring much to the table. In fact, I'd lean more towards Damia, Sage of Stone for her much more useful ability as well as the interactions that brings.

However, this does not mean that Sisters of Stone Death are useless.

In fact, I think these Sisters are a board wipe in disguise, holding back a B/G prison Strategy, unique to the color combo, and full of ramp to get your big things out quickly.

In observing Sisters of Stone Death, it's hard not to read the final ability and really want a massive Mind Control on a stick, but I don't think that's where Sisters value lies. Don't get me wrong, it's incredible, but it's not the primary function of the Medusa Queen: more of a cherry on top.

Instead, I think her first ability is all that she needs. For , you essentially have a Pit Fight , or to be exact, a more expensive Lure, which at first seems like a negative, but can be incredibly strong in its presence as much as its action. With proper equipment like Aspect of Gorgon, Touch of Moonglove and Gift of the Deity , she is a Deadly Allure on a stick.

However, those pesky "indestructible" Blightsteel Colossus, pumped up Zur the Enchanter, Gideon Token, Theros God or creatures boosted by Eldrazi Monument are only slightly a problem. Luckily, we can have them exiled from the game for only , built right into her second ability. When you're mana flooded, suddenly, those creatures are yours.

See, unlike Voltron commanders like Zur the Enchanter, Uril, the Miststalker , or Thrun, the Last Troll , Sisters of Stone Death are strong in the fact that their attacks have board presence more than straight power. It only takes 3 full hits to deal 21 Commander Damage, and so each time they attack, Sisters must be answered, which means that we can use this to our advantage by punishing the opponents just for attacking.

The goal of this deck is to bust your opponent's creature's open with Nemesis Mask tactics, forcing them to block to save against the 21 Commander damage, and either capping with our other punishing creatures, or outright killing with Sisters.

This deck is mostly mana explosion to get Sisters out as soon as possible, hopefully before turn 8, when other decks are exploding and engines are online. The rest of the deck is Deathtouch abilities and similar redundant tactics to clear out as many opponents as possible.

I'd love suggestions if you have any!
