Welcome to my take on Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest

After I had my first game with this deck, I realised how powerfull this deck can be.What's nice about this deck, is that you don't even have to play the commander asap to win. There are other cards that can win the game for you. This deck tries to win games through combat damage.

This deck concentrates on a few things, other then prowess and non creature spells. Getting damage through is essential. Therefore there are a lot of cards that give unblockable to a creature. There is also a bit of 'protection from colour'. This can be used for offense or defense. There is a fair bit of card draw in this deck. Most of the draw effects are in addition to another effect. Cards like Expedite, Ponder and Defiant Strike are a few of the cards I looked for.

This deck has a few tricks up his sleeve. Hold the Line is a great way to surprise opponents, even if I only have 2 or 3 creatures on the board. Cast a cheap spell, untap with Jeskai Ascendancy and give your opponent an unexpected defeat. Chandra's Ignition is a great way to clear the board. If you combo that with Soulfire Grand Master, well that is a ton of life to gain.

I build in a little bit of defense in this deck. The main reason is my playgroup. Elesh norn and Sheoldred see play every game. They use a lot of sac engines which makes me sac my creatures. I need to have some answers to that. Suggestions on this issue are very much welcomed. In the original deck I used Mystic Barrier and although it worked pretty well, I didn't like the idea that my opponents couldn't attack each other freely. It is to much a control effect and that's not what this deck is about.

A special mention goes to Sage-Eye Avengers. It's not a cheap card, but it is really really good. It is like Unsummon on a stick.

After 10 or so games, there are a few cards that were very underwhelming.


Brave the Sands: was worth a shot, but this deck doesn't really care about defense and this card provided way to little.

Erase: there are better options.

Ajani's Presence : ended up as a dead draw way to many times. I have a few cards that do the same and I think this one is to much.

dictate to heliod: no need for it. Most of the time there are only a few creatures on my side of the board so the effect is minimal, even with the tokenmakers in this deck.


Rhystic Study: some more card draw witch is always great.

Orim's Thunder: maybe i should put in a simple Disenchant but I like that this card can give me some life.

Teleportal: another card that makes my creatures unblockable, but the overload effect is great combined with some tokens.

Madcap Skills: +3/+0 is great, but nothing another card can't do. The menace part makes this card worth a test.

Wow. This Deck looks so sweet. Im trying to built Shu Yun too and your deck is so much better than mine. I didnt even realize how many spells there are, which make creatures unblockable.Making creatures unblockable actually makes so much sense with a commander like Shu Yun.

But there is one thing though. Why dont you run Fevered Visions, Treasure Cruise or Dig Through Time for some more Card draw?

I can imagine that you actually fil up your graveyard pretty fast, dont you?So casting Treasure Cruise or Dig Through Time for 1/2 mana shouldnt be any Problem, right?

Hope you get my point. But still, +1 from me.

Thanks for your thoughts.I don't own fevered visions. I considered treasure cruise and dig through time but went for a cheap alternative. Divination is only 3 mana...drawback is its a sorcery.If i wouldn't need tokens or a bit of defence....skywise teachings /mystic barrier/assemble the legion are easy to switch out for some more drawspells or buffs

Nicely done. You and I had similar takes on Shu Yun. You went with more protection from color spells, whereas I went with more trample and indestructible. I did include Treasure Cruise and also Faithless Looting. Flashback is a fun way to get more prowess triggers on Shu Yun.

Fun looking deck, I really think Thassa, God of the Sea and Bident of Thassa would have a great home here, also Rhystic Study if your willing to put a little money into it.
