Playtesting Changes! 164 Votes! #1 Zombie Deck!!! —July 22, 2017

I am sad to say that out of the 25+ zombies in Hour of Devastation, NONE are playable in this deck... Really disappointing... However, I am making some changes after some more playtesting. Let me know what you think!!!

As many have stated, the Lantern is not really necessary in two color decks. Damnation will often fill the grave for The Scarab God

The high CMC of Overseer is a big factor. There are often a lot of other things I would want to do with that mana. Fleshbag on the other hand is amazing for 3 cmc.

Taking out the highest CMC, and worst Lord, for a zombie making machine! Although Alchemist hurts The Scarab God's copy ablilty, it just wins games with his drain ability!

Deathmantle was a good concept, but never really panned out. Gempalm is really an instant speed wincon.

I will be keeping 4 mana up very often for The Scarab God's ability. Being able to counter and use the ability is pretty amazing!

This deck was just really needing some removal, and this one is great!

Great suggestion from man1ac! It makes since to me!

I am trying to make room for Burnished Hart, Solemn Simulacrum, Memory Plunder, Muddle the Mixture and Phyrexian Altar. Any thoughts on what I should remove?

rob_shifflett: Thank you for the suggestion and the vote! I think Attrition is to good to remove, but Deathmark Prelate seem really good. I'll have to try and make room for it!

mehtagame: I also found mana problems after about a dozen games yesterday. They deck was crazy powerful, if I had enough mana to get going. Also, your commander is a amazing g way to spend your leftover mana!

Enral: Your deck looks super solid. I will give it another look today so I can leave you some suggestions!

Deathstroke2791: That deck look hilarious man! Does your meta let you play it?

Might be expensive or hard to add, but Phyrexian Altar is a card that would be nuts in this deck with the zombie since it combos amazingly with Gravecrawler, you will be able to get infinite enter the battlefield and zombie dies triggers, and with different cards this can make a lot of infinite combos: Every combo will have Phyrexian Altar and Gravecrawler to give the triggers and these cards will give different outcomes:

Rooftop Storm : Infinite coloured mana, since you can cast Gravecrawler for free. With Ashnod's Altar instead of Phyrexian Altar you could get infinite colourless mana, but that would keep up a slot in the deck , and one is fine.

Diregraf Captain/Plague Belcher/Vengeful Dead : The triggers will give infinite damage. You win.

Secrets of the Dead : You dont use this card, and it might not be that useful in this deck, but it could be argued that you do have some reanimation so it could be used. But with the triggers you could have infinite card draw, even though it seems not that good since you filter your library like crazy with The Scarab God.

Noxious Ghoul: You removed this, and i see your point for doing it, but it is a recurring Crux of Fate for Zombies, where you can even remove indestructible creatures. It does hit your commander, but for a board wipe on your opponents, it could be justified.

Diregraf Colossus : Infinite tapped 2/2 Black zombie tokens, if you have a Leyline of Anticipation you can make the tokens right before your turn and untap them. Be careful if you have Graveborn Muse on the field though. Unless you would add a Exquisite Blood to gain all the life your opponents lose due to The Scarab God upkeep trigger.

There might be even more combos in here, and they can be optimized with other cards on the field, but these are the basic combos that can be tuned.

Oh right, you will have all these combos available by adding Phyrexian Altar ;)

Oh, found more combos, mill combos. Still need the triggers.

Altar of Dementia + Rooftop Storm: Mill opponents entire library

Altar of the Brood : Mill their intire library.

Its a fun game, i keep thinking there are no more combos, and then i find another one. The triggers will also put counters on your Black Market, giving you infinite Black Mana in your next upkeep.

Apparently the suggestion didnt go through, so i will again recommend Exquisite Blood :)

Odysseus_97: Wow! Thank you for your AMAZING feedback! If you dont mind, I will add those combos to the Combo section of the Primer (I am trying to post it this weekend).

Phyrexian Altar is a card I don't own, that I have been on the fence about buying this past week. It just seems so good, but I dont just want it to be a 'combo piece'. The other 'combo pieces' are stand-alone amazing card is the deck, but the question for me is if the Altar is good in the deck alone. Idk I want to drop $25 on a card I will only maybe use. What is your experience with it? I do want to draw Alter and just have to tutor for other cards to make it good. Ya know what I mean?

Keep feeding me the combos, lol. I will even include a few combos for cards I don't include, both others might want to.

Thank you again for the feedback and and suggestions! You rock!!

No problem, i dont mind at all you just put it in, by the way i really like your primer, good job. Love that you included the Lore about the god :D

I will keep posting combos, im in shock that those triggers can make so many different infinite combos. You propably saw it, but i just realised that if The Scarab God drains each of your opponents for 10 life, you dont only get 10 life off Exquisite Blood, you get 30 :O

I see your point of it as a combo piece, although i have not seen a card in a long time that makes so many possible combos, so it might be justifiable, since it also powers both your winconditions mill and lifedrain.

Its though to see if it will be good as a mana generator alone in this deck, it depends on the amount of tokens you produce and zombies you can do without.

Have not played the Scarab God deck yet, and do not own a Phyrexian Altar either, but might buy it. Although i have tried a similar combo in my Krenko, Mob Boss commander deck with Skirk Prospector as a budget Phyrexian Altar (If you want to see that deck, it is on my account called Krenko's Army). I can say that it's very good, it is included in many of my infinite combos, and it is actually really good as a mana generator. Have been able to sacrifice enough tokens to play cards for a total of 12 mana and then go infinite.

Krenko makes more tokens than this deck will produce, but it will still be sweet to sacrifice one minor important creature or token to get that one mana needed to cast an important card, maybe Overseer of the Damned right before combat, and in the following combat phase, it will most likely make up for that lost token. A good outcome of this as a mana source could be to have one untapped Island and a [Counterspell] in hand, then sacrifice a single zombie token to be able to cast that to maybe counter a boardwipe.

But maybe your meta would allow the same rule as mine, if we want to use a card but it is very expensive, we are allowed to proxy it and see how well it works in our deck and then decide to buy one or not. Actually we allow all proxies since we want to spend time playing magic, not working overtime to afford those cards. But we allow all proxies except for the overpowered cards like original dual lands and such, since you will never really go out and buy those cards.

And thanks, you too. Have been using some of the feedback you have gotten to cut cards off my own The Scarab God EDH deck and combos, so just posting stuff i found out myself :)

Phyrexian Altar is a very powerful card and is not only playable in this deck and format, the price clearly shows that. But you can use it in many other decks too, so even if it would turn out to not be worth it in this deck (even though I think it will be) you can use it in other decks, some may use it even more. And if you own 1 of them, i would say its fair to proxy it to any other deck you use, since then its just about moving the card around :)

But best feedback to see if it is worth its pricetag, is to proxy it and playtest, hope your meta will allow it. Maybe later they will say you need to buy it to play it since its really busted as a combo piece :)

I need to take a closer look at this deck ;) I really want to build this guy, but I'm in pretty deep on The Locust God already...

Also, have you considered Bloodchief Ascension for the combo with Mindcrank? It seems SUPER easy to set up, and both pieces of the combo work fantastically here.

Risen Executioner is still in the deck list but the change log says he's out. Did you forget to make a change? The deck list still has 99 cards.

Just wondering if there is a reason you're not including Necropotence?

July 4, 2017 4:21 p.m.

VexenX says... #14

Enral: It was in the list at first, and then I realized that I really don't want my cards to be exiled, while discarding is just FINE! The deck is almost always full because I dump mana into The Scarab God so often. Plus I run some other great draw.

VexenX: That makes sense...what are your thoughts on Slate of Ancestry for card draw + discard?

July 4, 2017 7:44 p.m.

man1ac says... #16

Glen Elendra Archmage may be worth a try? Getting tokens of her would make it impossible to interact with us...

July 5, 2017 12:22 p.m.

Liliana, the Last Hope can control the board and fill your gy in the early game and her emblem alongside scarab got can end games crazy quick.

Love the use of flash enablers! So many zombie players omit the usefulness of being able to resolve Army of the Damned at your opponents end step.

July 11, 2017 10:30 a.m.

VexenX says... #19

I am not so sure about Slate of Ancestry. It seems likely very situational card draw. Consecrated Sphinx would be added first.

Glen Elendra Archmage allows for repeatable counters, but only gives you one more use after Exiling it with The Scarab God.

If I had an extra Liliana, the Last Hope lying around I might give it a shot, but it is by no means worth the $35 dollar price tag. Standard players just want it to be there Liliana of the Veil...

LoTeezah: I was pretty proud of my flash idea. It makes the deck feel very control-like, while also being a zombie beat-down deck. Plus getting the out of no-where win with The Scarab God on your upkeep is pretty amazing!

man1ac says... #20

Idea behind Glen Elendra Archmage is more to cast her and "Enjoy" her Double 1U Counter. And dont underestimate her ability to interact with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed....Endless 1U Counter Stuff :)

Had some playtesting of different builds on Xmage and seem to like yours the best. I dropped some expensive stuff (My Playgroup doenst need a Cavern)But on all games I didnt really like Nim Deathmantle The deck is hungry to Exile all stuff there is on a GY and having 4cmc laying around isnt - at least for me - my playstyle.

I included some Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre - should have seen the face of my friend when I dropped this turn 5 :D

I decided to make some changes and include some more mill. In some games I was kinda stuck because I coudlnt get stuff into the GY (my own or everybody elses)....

Duskmantle Guildmage to go with your mindcrank. Infinite mill and damage

I also disagree with the removal of Noxious Ghoul I played my Scarab God build, which is similar to yours and you need the removal. The Attrition isn't enough.

XDarthRipperX says... #24

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about Living Death, I use Undead Alchemist and usually tutor him first. While it doesn't go well with scarab God's second ability, It feeds his second. Combo that with the Mindcrank and you have a good zombie creation engine and your opponent loses all of his creatures :)

Nice deck! It's definitely provided some inspiration for mine: The Scarab God, Grave Defiler

A couple suggestions:

Rewind is a great counterspell in here. It untaps just enough lands for Scarab God's ability.

You may want to run a couple instant speed kill spells to get rid of opponents' threats and then reanimate them. Hero's Downfall and Curtains' Call are great for this.
