The Prowess of Sages

Commander / EDH*

Phaetion

Description

A second Jeskai deck using some cool cards I want to run, but couldn't in my other deck. Do note that I don't want to try and focus solely on voltron.

Medomai the Ageless: with your general giving him double strike means 2 extra turns if he lands a hit. That's why I run him in my Rafiq of the Many deck. Of course, if I have Finest Hour out as well that's 4 extra turns. Haven't pulled that one off just yet though, but one can dream right? lol Although access to and opens up the extra combat phase cards.

Flagellum: I added Medomai, but I also added Savage Beating and Waves of Aggression because they trigger prowess, and are better than the other options.

In the same train of thought, which I was mentioning to another Shu Yun player:

These are beautiful additions for creature slots. Then you have a couple of cards with cipher: Hidden Strings, Stolen Identity :)

And if budget is not a problem, the sword cycle (e.g. Sword of Fire and Ice) are good aditions.

Then add cheap cantrips (e.g. Ponder) and you are relatively set.

Panas: I already have too many creatures. I need more instants and sorceries.

Then may I suggest a Sunforger package? Helps both aspects of aggro and control.

There's so many strong instants in white and red and a lot of blue ones that share either white, or red. Like Counterflux and Render Silent in addition to the plethora of removal (e.g. Swords to Plowshares) and protection (e.g. Apostle's Blessing). There's just too many choices to make and those can be meta-related, but some that are always strong include those I've already mentioned plus Return to Dust, Into the Core, and Boros Charm.

Hope this helps a little bit more than before!

Panas: Ok. Sunforger package added. Now for Sorceries. I want to run boardwipes, but this deck looks to be more aggressive than its predecessor, so I may want to watch that. Card draw is also another issue.

I think Slip Through Space would be a good card to add into the deck. It's a cantrip that makes your creatures unblockable.

Ok so...i know you said you already have too many creatures.... but I think I'd actually cut a few you have (like Mistfire Adept & Dragon-Style Twins especially and possibly Cunning Breezedancer) to add a few or all of the following: Docent of Perfection  Flip, Young Pyromancer, Talrand, Sky Summoner, Guttersnipe and/or Melek, Izzet Paragon. Most of these would also help you step away from the voltron only path as you mentioned you'd like to do in your forum post. Empty the Warrens and Rise from the Tides are also good for this. I'm also a fan of Sphinx-Bone Wand in decks like this, though it's above most of your curve.

Speaking of your curve, I think with your current curve, I'd drop one land and two mana rocks unless you start throwing higher drops in after this point.

Anyways...looks pretty good so far....gl & hf

joshuaizac: I thought about some of those earlier, and I decided not to add them for one reason: I feel that the instant or sorcery clause is too restrictive. Sure, I have Niblis of Frost in there, but I want to keep that to a low level. I may add Pyromancer or Talrand, but I don't expect the others to make the cut. Lands-wise, I avoid dropping below 37 at any cost, and 10 mana rocks was good from my experience with my other deck. So, I kept that formula in this build with no plans on changing it. Thanks for your thoughts though.

Blasphemous Act might pair nicely with Soulfire Grand Master if enough creatures are on the BF. Huge amounts of lifegain to boot.
