War of the Spark Update - Finale of Devastation —April 21, 2019

FINALLY a set that offers a sweet sweet dino flavored spell. Not only that, but it's insane and a must include for this deck. The card i'm speaking of is Finale of Devastation, pictured below:

FoD

It's going to be slotted in for Triumph of the Hordes, as it offers more versatility, and again has more flavor. What do you think of this spell? Will you be picking one up for yourself?

Speaking of updates, I figured I would take a look at Lifecrafter's Bestiary - that card has done pretty much nothing in this deck, and it's about time I started looking at alternate possibilities. I'm strongly considering Sylvan Tutor, as it's basically another Worldly Tutor - and that's awesome. Thinking of other ideas as well for draw/tutor options in Naya. Is there anything in red I could use? Let me know in the comments!

Edit: I did discover Winds of Change. I'm not willing to spend the $100 or so for a Wheel of Fortune, as that would definitely be the ideal choice here.

Additional Edit: At the Pre-release I attended (Shout out to Game Haven in Maryland) I received Vivien's Arkbow as my promo. Had a good time cheating creatures out onto the field. I'm also trying to work this card into the deck. Any suggestions on what I should take out?

Grand Abolisher or Conqueror's Flail could also really help with your counter spell situation, or War's Toll can restrict opponent's available mana for counterspells. Reverberate or Wild Ricochet can counter their counters

I read your Update about Game Haven. Despite you lost both games it seems you had a lot of fun playing. While I flew over the text I noticed a rules mistake your play group made. In the first game the Parun player targeted you three times with Jaya's Immolating Inferno but this is not allowed. With Jaya's Immolating Inferno you can't target the same target more then once. I just wanted to inform you because you were on the losing end of this mistake. I hope this is helpful for you and game on!

Here is the rule:

Rule 114.3 114.3. The same target can’t be chosen multiple times for any one instance of the word “target” on a spell or ability. If the spell or ability uses the word “target” in multiple places, the same object or player can be chosen once for each instance of the word “target” (as long as it fits the targeting criteria). This rule applies both when choosing targets for a spell or ability and when changing targets or choosing new targets for a spell or ability (see rule 114.7). Source:

CaptainBanana42, sorry for taking so long to respond to you. Life keeps me busy, and I don't get to post updates as often as I'd like. Thanks for the lowdown on how Jaya's Immolating Inferno works - i'll admit, now i'm a bit more salty about that game now. Not only did I get hated out with blue, but killed on a misplay? Le Sigh. But that's magic, it's all a learning experience. So, now initially I was contemplating on doing another write up but now? I'll just encompass that in this post. So yesterday I had a ahem 3 HOUR LONG GAME THAT ENDED IN A DRAW. It was insane. The game just kept going and going...and at the very end when we called it everyone there was more or less at their starting life totals...most were above! It was like a battle among titans...it was insane!...and insanely frustrating. I'm only going to give some of the highlights as I remember them.

So the game took place at Chesapeake Sports Cards (shoutout to CSC!) two players are part of my usual play group: a Focused Derevi, Empyrial Tactician deck that relied more on creatures with ETB triggers as opposed to Stax, and another deck in the Focused category - Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign which has a top deck manipulation engine that can oppress the board. These decks have creature stealing effects, counterspells, and board wipes and can get to them pretty reliably. Then that leaves the last player who isn't part of my playgroup: a Lifegain Oloro, Ageless Ascetic, who ran all of the usual suspects when it came to instant wincons - Felidar Sovereign, Aetherflux Reservoir, Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond combo etc. What. A. Slugfest. Yennett started off early when she got a Expropriate off and stole most of the board's prized creatures. We learned early on that you never give an Expropriate "time". Ever. My loss wasn't too great though, all Yennett got from me was Huatli, Warrior Poet. Eventually Yennett's time came to an end when Derevi cast an overloaded Cyclonic Rift - then the table proceeded to just beat on Yennett for her insolence. Funny thing though, she previously gained 24 life off of Huatli because she also stole a 12/12 Bane of Progress so ultimately our beatings just whittled her down to more or less starting health. Then, it became Oloro's turn to be scary. He cast Necropotence, Sanguine Bond, and Felidar Sovereign with 50 life. Everyone got scared until I cast Zacama, who promptly ate the Sovereign. Then as thanks Derevi exiled Zacama with an Eldrazi Displacer who also had a Sundial of the Infinite on the board. Fortunately, I made the correct play, and sent Zacama back to the command zone.

In case you didn't know Eldrazi Displacer + Sundial of the Infinite have a very unique combo in EDH - this combo can potentially exile your commander (or any creature for that matter) for the rest of the game. How it works, is that the opponent on their turn activates Displacer targeting your commander. Since your commander changes zones you do have the option to place them back into the command zone (which is the right play). If you do not then in response, the opponent can activate Sundial of the Infinite. Your commander doesn't come back. They're exiled. Scary, right? Now it was Derevi's time to shine. She attempted to get her greedy talons on Zacama using her ability to target creatures, and Willbreaker but luckily she had a Sword of Feast and Famine equipped. Unfortunately, after that someone (I don't remember who) cast a boardwipe that got through and put me more or less back to square one. My spicy play however, came when I got Regisaur Alpha in play. I equipped the 3/3 token it produced with the swords, and cast a Boros Charm on it to give it double strike, sending it straight at Derevi. Tap, untap, tap, untap, tap. - I sent a Comet Storm at the table for 35. That's where I should've been able to reign supreme...but alas...the Oloro player had a Swan Song.

My Face when Swan Song was cast Show

So at that point, I knew the game was going to be even longer than the 2 hours it already ran. The worst of it, was that Oloro wasn't done with Zacama. They cast a Return to Dust targeting both my Sword of Feast and Famine and Swiftfoot Boots purposefully enabling Derevi (who at some point recast Willbreaker) to steal Zacama. This was all done on purpose - it was a team up. I was convinced that I was going to get hated out of the game...but for some reason the deck was resilient enough to keep them at bay. I learned alot from all that, but...yeah I think we were pretty much done. I had to get going and everyone was mentally exhausted. I made some tweaks and changes to the deck...let me know what you think? Also, thanks for commenting and the +1 again!

I think the Eldrazi Displacer + Sundial of the Infinite combo doesn't work. There is no timespan where you can use Sundial of the Infinite so that the creature would be exiled forever because the ability of Eldrazi Displacer resolves as a whole. If you let the ability resolve the card gets exiled and then it enters the battlefield immediately. So Sundial of the Infinite can't be acitivated while the creature is exiled.

In your example if Sundial of the Infinite would get acitvated in response: it will go on the stack and will be the latest effekt that got on the stack. The Stack would resolve in this order: Sundial of the Infinite abilty and then the Eldrazi Displacer ability. Sundial of the Infinite would end the turn and all spells and abilities on the stack would be exiled. Because they are exiled they can't resolve and your commander is still on the battlefield.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

CaptainBanana42, you're right. I made a mistake - Sundial of the Infinite interacts with End of Turn return effects like the one on Roon of the Hidden Realm. The idea is that you activate Sundial at the beginning of the end step. If the targeted commander doesn't go back to the command zone, then it's re-entry into play is put on the stack, then when Sundial is activated the stack is cleared and said commander has no legal end-step to re-enter. Worse yet, it doesn't attempt to re-enter play at later end steps...it's just gone. I got that ruling from a judge friend of mine, so it's legit. I don't like Sundial of the Infinite...that card is nuts.

i'm learning to love using sundial of the infinite more and more, that card has way more utility than people give it credit for.

LVL_666 it is just another broken move you can do with Sundial of the Infinite. This card is crazy. I can't decide if I love this card or hate it. I will definitely watch out for this interaction in the future.

I really enjoy your game updates and I hope to read another one soon.

I would try running the new enchantment Rhythm of the Wild . Make your creatures unable to be countered and get haste or +1/+1 when they enter.

Hey there, been a while. Not sure if you're still active on the site but here's a bit of code that another user provided for me that will make your update panel transparent. Hope it helps!

Hey scotchtapedsleeves,

I'm still active on the site, just not as much as i've used to. I will however take that code and try it out. Thanks! What's been occupying my time is my new deck The Song of Phyresis. It's my love letter to Phyrexia and my attempt at making a scary Infect deck. I've had a somewhat difficult time trying to get it to a place where i'm happy - but now that i've reached that milestone, i'm going to try and make a nice deck page for it.
