The Orzhov Token Factory™ w/ Secret Surprise!

Modern Competitive Control Tokens W/B (Orzhov)

verynice47

Description

Do you want value? Well you've come to the right place! Do you want to make creature based decks cry? Do you want to win with a horde of flying minions? We've got all that and more at the Orzhov syndicate's token factory!

B/W Tokens is a competitive modern deck. It is a midrange strategy with many control elements, in the form of removal and hand disruption, such as Path to Exile and Inquisition of Kozilek. Your goal when playing this deck is to disrupt and control your opponent in the early game whilst building up an army of small token creatures. The mid-game (T4-5) is when you hopefully take over with anthem effects such as Sorin, Solemn Visitor and Intangible Virtue.

One of the main strengths of tokens is they chump block very well, which is essential in a race situation. Don't be afraid to go down to 10-12 life before chump blocking, especially if you have a Sorin or Timely Reinforcements in hand. The pure card/creature advantage of a resolved Lingering Souls or Spectral Procession is more often than not hard to answer. Spot removal just kinda sucks against this deck.

There is no one decklist to rule them all with B/W Tokens, and it is easy to adapt your deck to your meta. (As always, the sideboard on my list is customized to my meta, and yours should be too!) if you want a more detailed description of the deck, check out xzzane's primer.

Engineered Explosives set for 2 and Ghostly Prison work well against merfolk. Stony Silence hoses affinity, Zealous Persecution is very good against them too. Chalice of the Void set to 1, hand disruption, and removal are good to side in against infect. Grixis delver is one of our easiest matchups in modern, but Auriok Champion and extra hand disruption seal the deal. Auriok Champion and extra hand disruption for delver, consider Rest in Peace as well. The only way you'll win against tron is a miracle, but you can help that miracle along with the aid of Stony Silence, Fulminator Mage, things like that. If you have the money, fetches like Marsh Flats would be a good addition. Westvale abbey isn't that good, so I would advise taking that out. I prefer Murderous Cut over go for the throat.

xzzane Thanks, I've been testing both murderous cut and go for the throat, and I'll probably end up using the cut. A lot of these cards are quite expensive, are there any slightly cheaper sideboard cards? I can buy these cards, but it'll take a while so I would quite like something cheaper for the meantime. Also, is it a good idea to play Flooded Strand instead of Marsh Flats?

How does this sideboard look?

Honestly- spread a little thin. I'd want to go more all in sideboarding against specific matchups rather than swapping a few cards in- 1 relic of prog isn't very likely to get drawn, but four is.

Any fetchland that can fetcch Plains is good; Marsh Flats is just ideal. The sideboard is ok, but not perfect. The sideboard will also depend on how many decks in the meta as well. For example, if you have 3 infect and only 1 merfolk player, it makes sense to side better for infect. Luckily, you'll do just fine with adding extra removal and hand disruption as a temporary solution to many of the decks in your meta. Bite the bullet and get the Stony Silence though; that's a sideboard staple well worth having.

xzzane Thank you so much! I'll check out my meta this weekend and then see if I can get you a more accurate list of decks.

xzzane How do you feel about Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth? (keeping in mind I'm not playing Marsh Flats).

xzzane says... #9

Not worth it. Chances are you'd be helping mana fix your opponents more than yourself. Black mana loses a lot of importance past turn 1-2 when you use a hand disruption spell.

xzzane Thanks, I was just considering it and I thought it might work since there are no Marsh Flats.

xzzane What would you recommend I do if I didn't use Auriok Champion for budget reasons.

+1 Timely Reinforcements +1 Thoughtseize would be good generalized choices. It depends on the meta though, if you run into a lot of dredge seize might not be a good choice. It's good against infect though, because it can grab Become Immense

Or, the budget thoughtsteals; Duress, Despise, Blackmail.

August 26, 2016 12:51 p.m.

verynice47 says... #14

Cool, thanks. Is Duress fine to run as a one of until I can pick up another Thoughtseize?

lagotripha says... #15

It should hit most of the stuff you care about- your tokens should be good facing creatures and it'll deal with Chalice of the Void Ratchet Bomb Supreme Verdict Lightning Bolt and Become Immense dealing with a lot of things likely to mess you up. its pretty rare to be hitting creatures with thoughtseize, unless they are goyfs or combo engines, so should be ok.

Hahahaha he totally should BrandonJamesCAC.

xzzane says... #19

Hahahahaha nah, I give my experience free of charge :p Duress is fine as a budget alternative. Most of the things we care about are noncreatures; tokens is inherently strong against most midrange creature based decks, so it's more important to grab the sodeboard pieces and counterspells and the like. Lagotripha covered it pretty well as well.

xzzane, what's your thought on my new manabase? Keep in mind the four Windswept Heath are the only fetches I want.

Control isn't our best matchup anyway, so I feel bringing it up as a dead card against it is a bit unfair. Celestial Collonade dies to it, so it isn't entirely worthless. And though it doesn't stop the Annihilator 6 ability, it does stop a Nahiri'd Emrakul from hitting you for 15 damage. And I don't really think it's fair to say it is bad against Lily because under that logic, everything in our deck besides Lingering Souls and lands extra lands we don't need are bad because of Lily.

As you have pointed out, Blessed Alliance is really good against Infect, Burn, and other aggro decks like Bogles. Aside from Bogles, most metas have at least a couple Infect and Burn players, and at bigger tournaments, you better believe there are Infect and Burn players. Having this maindeck can totally blindside your opponent and steal you the win Game 1, and we would use our sideboard cards to clench Game 2. Even if you find a deck that it is bad against, you at least know what to side out for Game 2.
