Sorcery (1)

This is probably the most convoluted decklist I've ever put together - it's designed to cast all Epic spells at once, feat. Marit Lage! I definitely wasn't setting out to make this as competitive as possible, just want to have fun with it! Anyway, just looking at the decklist won't tell you what I'm doing, so I'll explain step-by-step what the plan here is.

STEP 1: INITIAL SETUP

  • ramp, ramp, ramp. The aim is to get to 12 mana, although that doesn't have to get totally done right now. I need Epic Experiment to be cast for X=10 so that it can cast Eternal Dominion, so that's what we're building towards.
  • cast O-Kagachi, Vengeful Kami
  • tutor for Proteus Staff and get it into play, preferably with some control in my hand for protection.

STEP 2: PROTEUS STAFF RUNS

  1. Run O-Kagachi through the deck with Proteus Staff, and rearrange the deck as I please, because there are no creature cards.
  2. Play Boseiju, Who Shelters All, which will make Epic Experiment uncounterable.
  3. If necessary, put some cards back in the library from my hand with Brainstorm, See Beyond, et al. This may require an extra Proteus Staff run so I can have everything set up.
  4. Have Epic Experiment in hand and 12 mana available, including Boseiju. The top ten cards of the library must include Enduring Ideal, Eternal Dominion, Neverending Torment, and one of either Hour of Promise, Reap and Sow, or Wargate. I will also aim to have Endless Swarm, Undying Flames, Reverberate (which will copy Enduring Ideal), and Wild Ricochet (copying Neverending Torment or Eternal Dominion) in the top ten cards, but won't delay the move into step 3 if something's prevented me from putting some of them at the top of my library.

That best-case setup leaves two slots, with a good chance I'll have more to spare. Some good candidates to fill the remaining slots: Praetor's Counsel (greatly increases hand size for Endless Swarm and Neverending Torment), Insidious Will, Beacon of Unrest, Temporal Cascade, and Merciless Eviction

STEP 3: EPIC EXPERIMENT

Cast Epic Experiment, uncounterable, for X=10. Assuming everything goes perfectly: Reverberate's copy of Enduring Ideal will fetch me Privileged Position. Then, the original Enduring Ideal will put Solemnity on the battlefield. Whichever land-tutoring spell is part of the experiment will tutor for Dark Depths and put it on the battlefield with no counters (thanks to Solemnity), allowing Marit Lage to come out immediately. All of these will need to resolve before Undying Flames, so that it doesn't ruin any part of this setup.

I'll bribe out opponents' mega-cool creatures with Eternal Dominion and try to get rid of some boardwipes with Neverending Torment. The Endless Swarm snakes will look small by comparison, but can't be underestimated. Force Bubble and Paradox Haze and Starfield of Nyx are the top enchantments to get with future Ideal copies.

From here, a win shouldn't be too difficult to nab.

BACKUP PLANS

If all of this nonsense doesn't work, a win is still salvageable. A copied Enduring Ideal or Eternal Dominion will be extra powerful by itself. Enduring Ideal (after grabbing Solemnity) can search out Abundance, which can filter through my deck until I find Dark Depths. I can also aim for a Revel in Riches win.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS DECK

  • Why O-Kagachi?

O-Kagachi will discourage a lot of the attackers that a deck this short on creatures would normally draw, especially from threat players that have a particular card they want preserved. It won't send away everything, but I expect to consistently stay alive long enough to get to the Epic Experiment.

I don't really want the game to be over as soon as I pull off the Experiment. As splashy as this deck is, when all the Epic Experiment spells resolve, I don't want all my opponents to resign right away.

  • Does this actually work?

Yes! Epic Experiment will put all the instants and sorceries on the stack at once, meaning even though each spell will resolve one by one, the first Epic spell that resolves won't counter anything else that's already on the stack. And if I copy them on the turn I cast them, the copies will have Epic, too!
