The Man Who Sold the Pod

Commander / EDH UBR (Grixis)

Maybeboard

A fairly standard Mairsil, the Pretender build that aims to utilize the absolute bananas synergy of Mairsil and AEtherling . Whenever Mairsil is cast, you can choose a target creature or artifact in your hand or graveyard, and it is exiled with a cage counter, giving Mairsil all of its activated abilities. Caging Aetherling allows Mairsil to flicker once per turn, essentially enabling you to cage a new target on every turn. These targets are nearly uninteractable once caged except for a few Eldrazi and niche instants, which most players don't run. In order to rack up targets fast, you will need to make use of Entomb , Buried Alive , and the multiple looting and draw-power enchantments. Plenty of tutors also help us work towards this goal.

The key player in the deck is Quicksilver Elemental , which makes us able to duplicate all abilities that Mairsil currently possesses, bypassing the once-per-turn limit he has. As such, infinite mana combos are dangerously easy to perform in the deck. Cage Gilded Lotus , Pili-Pala , and Oona, Queen of the Fae to mill everyone out of the game instantly. Or generate enough mana to have a caged Memnarch 's effect steal everything on the board. A fun little Laboratory Maniac with Mirror-Mad Phantasm caged is a great win out of nowhere, as Mirror-Mad's effect will mill your whole deck looking for a card that isn't there. A bread and butter combo is the use of a caged Tree of Perdition to reduce your opponents to Mairsil's toughness - 4, and then snipe them with Hateflayer or Spikeshot Elder for 4. If you have Quicksilver, this is an easy OTK.

Haste enablers are pretty important to make Mairsil an instant threat on the board if you have Tree or Minion of Leshrac caged. You can also hold the entire table hostage with a Nevinyrral's Disk , and flicker Mairsil out to dodge the Disk effect when you decide to blow everything up. On top of Mairsil's effect, the build is stacked with a few counters and wipes when all else fails.

All-together, Mairsil can be a royal pain in the ass to your opponents while simultaneously and steadily working towards easily obtainable wincons in multiple flavors.
