Banlist Update - 1v1 MTGO —Oct. 11, 2017

Changes to the deck based on the updated 1v1 MTGO Banlist.

  • Enlightened Tutor --> Blind Obedience - This banlist update hurt us a lot. This deck does not have much draw power and tutors are the best way to find answers to problems on the battlefield. I understand why the banlist needed to be updated but its still a painful transition. Hopefully the additional taxing element will help us to victory.

Nice mono-white build. Simple, but effective. +1.

I love it, but like you said in description: risky. A Savra, Queen of the Golgari commander deck picking up steam or similar can really make the game unpleasant for you

@bushido_man96

  • Thanks for the compliment and the upvote! "Simple" is one of the best words to describe this deck.

@KeelHaul10

  • You are correct that an opposing deck centered around sacrificing creatures would give this deck a hard time. The biggest challenge for this deck are decks that can consistently remove (destroy/exile, sacrifice, or bounce) Isamaru, Hound of Konda and follow it up with card draw; black and/or blue control decks. Attaching Swiftfoot Boots or Champion's Helm can help but a well-timed Winter Orb or Armageddon is best. Success depends completely on what cards you draw.

I can see where its troubles come from. But, its like the ultimate EDH white-weeny build. Win with speed!

may I suggest switching Swiftfoot Boots with Lightning Greaves? it gives it extra protection, maybe a little too extra. or maybe Prowler's Helm? it makes it unblockable except by Walls. or better yet, add Hot Soup. unblockable period but if dealt damage it dies. which would not be a good thing if it weren't for your Hexproof equipment (and two swords) giving it protection from shooting spells making it an unblockable pup period. you should also add in Caged Sun giving your commander +1/+1 and having all your plains provide double which will be really helpful.

Is there any point to having fetchlands in a mono colored deck? Also, you might want to consider Assault Suit so the doge can't be sacrificed.

Wrt Gauntlet of Power vs Caged Sun, I've heard it said that symmetrical effects are rarely actually symmetric. The idea is that a mono-white deck has 100% use of a white gauntlet of power where any other colour combination will never get as much value from it.

  • Thanks for the upvote! Regarding fetchlands, while they do thin the deck to a minimal degree they are mostly used to get more utility from Scroll Rack when we do not have our Land Tax on the battlefield or a tutor in hand to force a shuffle. Admittedly the fetchlands had more function when Sensei's Divining Top was still legal, but I think they are worth keeping in for the opportunity cost they provide.

@RicketyEng

  • You have it exactly right on the comparison of Gauntlet of Power and Caged Sun - the effects granted by Gauntlet of Power tend to not be fully symmetrical. It's generally only a dead card when staring down a swarm of white creatures.

@Redace878

  • Regarding Assault Suit that is some spicy tech! Its pricey to cast and equip but it boosts power and prevents us from sacrificing Isamaru, Hound of Konda to Diabolic Edict style effects. It's on the consideration list and I will have a strong eye towards it as the meta develops. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hero's Blade + Isamaru, Hound of Konda = Sif from Dark Souls. Maybe you should add an Artorias for getting them into the field together :P

Love the deck! What about Armory of Iroas? I don't know if it would fit your playstyle, I never played a commanderdeck like yours before

Hey, I'm just curious but isn't Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip a better commander here? I mean trading 1 toughness for the ability to become indestructible seems like a good trade to me.

@dlamars

  • Kytheon, Hero of Akros  Flip would be a suitable alternate commander. The one point of toughness does come into play in the early rounds (attacking past 1/1 creatures) but indestructibility on command could be beneficial, even if it costs 3 mana that could be used for equipment or auras. I prefer to use a vanilla commander as my commander.

Yeah, but then you'd have to change the name of the deck....

Sick deck! May I suggest throwing in some stuff with Exalted, like Cathedral of War and Angelic Benediction? Considering Isamaru's attacking alone, that small boost could be pretty sick early game.

Love it. Btw does it stand any chance against stax decks?

@bushido_man96

  • Indeed I would have to change the name of the deck if I swapped out the commander. Another reason to leave Isamaru, Hound of Konda in charge. Plus, he is such a good boy. Yes he is!

@DoctorScarf

  • Thanks for the compliment! I have thought about some cards with Exalted, but they never seem to make the cut. Cathedral of War would be included if it did not enter the battlefield tapped. I had not considered Angelic Benediction but it has a similar function to Citadel Siege. I rarely choose "Dragons" except in special cases such as when I face Zur the Enchanter or similar.

@DarkSepho

  • Thanks for the approval. This deck does well against stax decks, in my opinion. We run some stax cards of our own so we are generally prepared for similar style cards. Also, having a cheap Commander without special abilities allows us navigate common stax elements.
