The Knights are back again... and again... and again...

Alt text (art by herbrex)

The overall goal with this deck is to abuse the strong midgame potential of the Knight class, with some graveyard play for extra flexibility and the ability to 'bounce back' from many removal spells. An early control suite offered by the B/G/W combo in the forms of Thoughtseize and Abrupt Decay can stall the game until the knights are ready to swing for the finish, and the ability to Dredge knights in faux-reanimation makes them extremely tenacious in combat.

As much as I would love to do a full Knight tribal, I have found time and again that where the Modern format is concerned, the Knights- while still effective, will need to be a little lenient in whom they accept as Squires, sorry :P

Below, I'll take you through my reasoning for specific cards.

CREATURES

Knight Exemplar: This purdy lady is part of the backbone of the Knight force, giving other knights indestructible will often give your knightbros an extra meat-shield before they get taken out. The fact that she can both be Aether Vialed in and Dredged with Haakon, Stromgald Scourge means that your opponent will always need to be on his toes, to avoid the dreaded Double Exemplar combo.

Mirran Crusader: This Knightbro is an amazing beater, with built-in double strike and protection from both Black and Green, this guy'll eat Tarmogoyf for breakfast.

Knight of the Reliquary: The real star in many tricolor decks that feature her colors, she does it all- mana fixing, deck thinning, and lategame scaling are all at your fingertips with this dame at the forefront of your forces. UTILITYYYY

Haakon, Stromgald Scourge: Haakon, like Knight Exemplar, comes in as a Utility creature to help maintain the tenaciousness and elasticity that the deck requires. While he cannot be played in a normal fashion, he can be discarded with both Liliana of the Veil and dredged with [[Golgari grave troll], making it a fairly simple matter to get him out. Once in play, he essentially renders all early lightning bolts directed at the likes of Knight Exemplar and Mirran Crusader moot, as they can come back swinging.

Golgari Grave-Troll: GGT's unbanning has been a long time in coming, and it prompted me to revisit this age-old deck of mine.

Vengevine: It can be very powerful if it's conditions are met, and those conditions are met very easily in this deck.

Gravecrawler: It's conditions for this deck are very reasonable, as many knights in this deck double as zombies, yay!

Stromgald Crusader : It's a zombie! It's got flexibility! It's got pro-white too, which means that it becomes nigh-unstoppable if rendered indestructible.

REMOVAL

Thoughtseize: Best targeted discard removal in the game, bar-none. Start picking your opponent's plans apart from turn 1.

Path to Exile: Great 1-drop removal, and gets through indestructible, which is nice.

Abrupt Decay: Uncounterable, a wide suite of targets. 3CMC will remove most of the relevant threats in Modern. An absolute must for anyone running B/G.

Maelstrom Pulse: There are some decks that have targets that neither Abrupt Decay nor Path to Exile can hit. Karn Liberated is one of them. This also deals with tokens extremely efficiently.

PLANESWALKERS

Liliana of the Veil: Arguably the best non-banned PW in Modern (I'm looking at you, Jace-who-shall-not-be-named...), she is an absolutely incredible bit of spot removal, on top of which she can help me discard Haakon to the graveyard, and direct-discard lands to pump Knight of the Reliquary. On top of that, her ultimate basically wins the game, so they really can't let her get rolling.

SIDEBOARD

Slaughter Pact: Some decks, like Twin and Kikki-anything need instant removal on demand to make sure they don't go off.

Pithing Needle: Again, this is here for fairly obvious reasons, as it effectively nullifies a 'pin' in an opponent's deck. While the best decks don't really have 'pins', it'll sure as hell slow em' down.

Leyline of Sanctity: Starting a game with this one the field makes for one sad, sad burn player.

Relic of Progenitus: Not sure if graveyard decks (like this one, ironically) will become super popular now, but Relic can't hurt.
