Mid-Week Casual Update (~75% win rate) —July 1, 2015

So, I've been playing this deck a lot on untap.in to test it against as many deck-lists as possible, finding out it's weaknesses and strengths, winners and losers.

Also made a few modifications (essentially reversions) to the deck:

Makes me sad, cause when/if Athreos gains affinity, the game gets crazy. But he was about the only non-threat/non-removal card in the entire deck.

Here is the quick stats:

  • Mono Green Ramp (2-0)
  • Temur Dragons - midrange (2-0)
  • Jeskai Combo Tokens (2-0)
  • Esper Midrange (0-2) [*1]
  • Grixis Heroic (2-0)
  • B/W Warriors (2-0)
  • Mardu Dragons (1-2) [*2]
  • Jund Dragons (2-0)
  • Temur Aggro (2-0)
  • 5C Dragons (0-2) [*3]
  • Mono-Red Goblins [origins] (2-1)
  • G/B Company Devotion (2-1) - Raptor / Den Engine with Pharika & Collected Company
  • Abzan Midrange (1-2) [*4]
  • Sultai Midrange (2-0)
  • Golgari Whip (2-0)
  • Mono Black Aggro (1-2) [*5]
  • B/W Warriors (2-0)
  • Green Midrange (2-0)
  • G/R Devotion (2-0) - Raptor / Den / Elemental (This makes me happy lol)
  • Jeskai Wins (2-0)
  • Jund Value Delve (0-2) / (R: 2-0) - After rematch (First game I didn't draw any threats, but I thought I could beat it, and I did! :])
  • Mono-Black Warriors (2-0)
  • Abzan Midrange (2-0) - After Valorous Stance change. Was MB: Spear of Heliod, SB: Hero's Downfall, Crackling Doom.

General Note: Another similarity in the losses is that I didn't have one drops or two drops starting out (against control type decks...lol) Another Note: Against other aggro decks (x/2 creatures) Always use Kolaghan's Command as the removal....its fun.

75% win rate, only losing with extremely bad hands (mana short/no creatures till turn 3) or when huge creatures come out and I have no answers for them.

Clearly, this deck's weakness is huge monsters that give opponents a lot of value, with 12+ removal spells in the deck though, concentrating on those creatures if you know the deck you're going up against makes it easier to deal with. Definitely considering something like Crux of Fate in the sideboard though (Kill all dragon creatures).

Still working on getting at least an 80%+ win rate since 70 is meh.

Suggestions will be considered.

Thank you!

Our decks are very similar now! I made changes to mine and wanted you to check em out. The banishing light made my night man! Best advice I've taken so far haha. I ended up doing 2-2 with mine last night, I knew I needed a few changes.

For sure! :)

Glad I could be of help. Upvoted your deck on the first day. ;)

I also went 2-2 last night, the losses were against Abzan Aggro and Abzan Control.

I've already made the modifications I thought I would need but that's the only match-up I have problems against right now (which also leads me to believe that r/g devotion would be a problem).

Doing mad research right now on abzan and g/r weaknesses and see how they're relevant to our arch-types.

I have another configuration in the works that I'm gonna try out vs abzan this week in casual to see how it does.

Will certainly post updates with any relevant info!

What did your decks lose against Magic-Fanatic420?

I lost to an all dragonlord control deck and a really good constellation deck. Both went to game 3 with me keeping a stupid hand. I know I could've won if I had went down another card.

Interesting. Against ub or esper I don't ever have issues, it's always abzan. I haven't gone against any constellations but I assume it's probably the same weakness im facing with abzan which is too many big threats and not enough removal or board state? It's why I added playsets of both Crackling Doom and Hero's Downfall after last night...but if it didn't work for you then maybe I'll need a different approach.

What were your wins?

I'll be posting a breakdown of my matches soon, self-evaluation is the path to success.

No my only my only problem was keeping a bad hand in both games. I just didn't want to mulligan so I chanced it and lost. My wins were against a mono red deck and another mardu tribal deck. Not Warriors like ours tho. Mostly the demon, rabblemaster and brimaz. I think we have enough removal tho. I normally never have problems with abzan, although that constellation deck was abzan. It's a whip deck/delve deck tho, so yeah rhinos all day.
