Sideboard

Maybeboard

Built around The Rack and Shrieking Affliction. Built for Competitive MODERN play. This Deck is a Control Deck with Emphasis on Speed. Goal is to rip apart an opponents hand Early game and control their hand total to only allow minimal play from them.... then make them sac whatever they played.

MAINBOARD:

The Discard:

Inquisition of Kozilek - An awesome early game card that forces them to slow their rate of play

Thoughtseize - Good for picking apart early hands or destroying their "perfect" hand.

Wrench Mind - PREVIOUSLY I was using Stupor which i still favor over wrench mind, but in current meta, the only artifacts worth discarding tend to be paramount to the decks function, and because it is 1 CMC less, i prefer it for it's speed.

Raven's Crime - Early game this is a simple discard spell, but late game when lands become redundant in field or in hand, it boosts the viability of this card, ESPECIALLY because this decks mana curve is so low.

USEFUL THINGS:

Liliana of the Veil - Expensive but absolutely necessary. Discard and Creature Sac.

Bitterblossom - Works Wonderfully with Ensnaring Bridge, allowing me to do terminal damage faster. Replaces Smallpox because many people felt jaded by it.

Dismember - Powerful for early AND late game. Optional to pay life vs mana.

Bile Blight - Good for a couple different matchups for different reasons. Mutavault was becoming a problem in a deck my friend played, but looking at the current meta, I realized that many decks are running manlands (Treetop Village, Creeping Tar Pit , Inkmoth Nexus, Raging Ravine) and this is a perfect answer to them, additionally it works well against token decks as well as various others such as merfolk decks.

Drown in Sorrow - A half decent answer to token decks and affinity aggro. 1 in MB and 2 in SB. Counterproductive to Bitterblossom so obvious sideboard swap.

Ensnaring Bridge - Many modern decks don't have a first game answer for this card, and it allows you to almost completely shut down their damage production essentially stalling the game in your favor. When they DO have a sideboard answer, they must decide between Ensnaring Bridge and The Rack.

Beseech the Queen - I've found that having the option to search for any card needed greatly improves the consistency and lock power of this deck. Although Beseech the Queen isn't my favorite option, it will have to do until i can afford Infernal Tutorx2

THE GEARS:

The Rack - Although the rules text of this card seems like it was written by the IRS, it basically states that if you have 2 cards in your hand you get 1 damage... (3 - 2 = 1) 1 card in hand you get 2 damage... (3 - 1 = 2) And if you have 0 cards in hand you take 3 damage... (3 - 0 = 3) Our Cube has the Rules text of this with algebraic formulas. we figured it was necessary.

Shrieking Affliction - This card is Very similar to The Rack however it does more... Consistent? damage? but it triggers at a lower threshold.

ONLY FOR FUN:

Sangromancer - As a optional card to add to the deck, it's not really good for anything except griefing.

SIDEBOARD:

Geth's Verdict - What's more embarrassing than making your opponent sacrifice a creature at instant speed? Making them lose 1 life on top of it. (It's like catching the ice-cream cone they dropped then licking it before you let it continue it's downward journey.)

Syphon Life - Useful against burn decks. Let's me maintain more life than my opponent just long enough to lock down a game and avoid close call situations.

Damnation - Oh yes.

Grafdigger's Cage - Locks down a few combo decks that use flashback and persist effects. OH WUT?!?! IT DOES MORE? Primeval Titan?? AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT! Birthing Pod? no! Polymorph? No. Tinker? Nope. You get the idea.

Nihil Spellbomb - Living End has ended.

Torpor Orb - Kitchen Finks who? Pestermite what?

Drown in Sorrow - Black doesn't really have any artifact hate... but i hear -2/-2 works rather well against aggro affinity!

Updates Add

After Many consecutive weeks of being in the number 1 spot, I've decided to retire it for a few weeks to allow for others to play without discouragement. HOWEVER, I will play this deck again. I have made a few Main Board changes that make the deck very consistent at locking down a game.

I have added the following:

2x Beseech the Queen

I have removed the following to make room:

1x swamp

1x Sangromancer Even though this is a 61st card only for fun, I've discovered the deck runs better with the addition of two search cards which brings the deck total to a hard 61, without fun cards.

They allow for me to search for anything that's missing in a lock down capability. I have decided that I will run 2x Beseech the Queen due to it's ability to find The Rack or Shrieking Affliction. Additionally, it allows for me to search for Side Board cards when need be, such as: Damnation, Drown in Sorrow.
