One Punch Primer

This is a non-budget, reanimator, self-mill, voltron EDH deck helmed by The Mimeoplasm. Our strategy is to flip our library over into our graveyard and then punch people out of the game. When our commander swings, players die.

Setting that up takes a bit of effort, some RNJeebus, and the right meta. Our deck is pretty resilient and I'd say it's about a strong six or a low five in terms of EDH power tiers, but if your meta plays a lot of counterspells and graveyard hate you might have to punch twice. Sometimes you will absolutely run away with the game and sometimes you will fight tooth and nail for a victory. I've won games without ever casting our commander and I've also lost games because I couldn't cast our commander. He's an important tool but you have to know how to set up the perfect punch or you're going to have to punch twice.

In order for us to setup a perfect kill with the Mimeoplasm we're looking for a very specific set of conditions. We need a haste creature in the graveyard and another creature whose power can tip us over the 21 threshold in order to win through commander damage. Often we will also need effects such as flying and trample in order to break through a player's defenses and deal that delicious lethal.

Lets begin by discussing our self mill strategy, and cards you want to see in your opening hand.

Satyr Wayfinder, Mulch, Winding Way, and Life from the Loam essentially will allow you to continue finding lands and filling up your yard. We are not running any traditional ramp, or draw spells in this deck, and so it is very important that we make use of cards such of these to keep pace with the resources of our opponents. A card like Deathrite Shaman and of course Hermit Druid can also help us 'find' lands (or add mana) as well as put things in our graveyard that we will definitely need later.

In addition to these we have a lot of other very versatile milling cards. nyxweaver, Ashiok, Dream Render, Mesmeric Orb, Grisly Salvage, and Hedron Crab are other self-mill cards that are all very low mana cost and great to see in your opening hand.

Bare in mind that every card that mills into your graveyard can help us locate Life from the Loam which is one of our bread and butter spells. We have a number of cards with the dredge mechanic that can speed up this process such as Golgari Grave-Troll, and Stinkweed Imp. These are not really cards we ever intended to cast, but they can be fodder for effects such as Fauna Shaman, and Survival of the Fittest.

Once we have setup our mill engine, our goal is to get a creature with haste (and preferably some form of protection) onto the battlefield and swinging.

Our haste creates are:

Gaea's Revenge, Decimator of the Provinces, Spirit of the Night, Putrefax, Skytherix, the Blight Dragon, and in a pinch we have Hall of the Bandit Lord to give other big bodies haste.

Both Brawn, and Wonder can give these creatures useful abilities such trample, and flying for breaking through enemy lines. These two cards are great targets for Entomb, and Buried Alive.

And finally, the muscles from our punches come from a number of other cards which we otherwise have no real intention to cast:

These include cards such as Impervious Greatwurm, Lord of Extinction, Emrakul, the Promised End, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, and Consuming Aberration.

'Perfect punch' combinations are as follows:

Gaea's Revenge + Impervious Greatwurm / Emrakul, the Promised End

Decimator of the Provinces + Impervious Greatwurm

Spirit of the Night + Impervious Greatwurm

Lord of Extinction and Consuming Aberration are a bit more situational, but typically can be used in any combination with the above creatures to finish someone off.

Putrefax, and Skitheryx can easily one shot a player through their infect damage with nearly any combination of cards in the yard. I do somewhat recommend you use them sparingly to end games however, because poison can invoke a lot more salt than just crushing someone. Also, we are running a copy of Tainted Strike which we can easily use on one of our creatures, or an opponents to kill someone off for just one black mana.

Because so much of our deck is turning over into our graveyard it's pretty easy to feel like you can't control the flow of the game and won't have answers when you need them, but fear not we have a few way to punch twice if the situation demands it.

Cards like Grapple with the Past, Tamiyo, Collector of Tales, and Nyx Weaver can let us get a card back that we've lost. We also run a small package of spells to Reanimate targets in our graveyard or return creatures back to our hands if we need to reuse their abilities. Tortured Existence, and Necromancy can bring back threats we've lost or utility creatures such as Caustic Caterpillar, Ixidron, and Bane of Progress.

If we find ourselves in a situation where our graveyard is being hit pretty hard, cards like Bane of Progress, and Caustic Caterpillar can come in to even the playing field. Against other graveyard strategies we're reliant on Ashiok, Dreamer Render, Deathrite Shaman, and Lochmere Serpent to fight against the other necromancer in our pool.

We run a handful of board wipes in the form of Damnation, Toxic Deluge, and Living Death, but Kederekt Leviathan can also act as a soft reset for bad boardstate (and can be looped with Necromancy!)

There's a lot of synergy with our deck, and because we can essentially just remove a player from the game in one hit, we're usually not too worried about creature stategies or problematic planeswalkers, but this is meta dependent and should be evaluated on an group by group level.
