In the original lore, Xira Arien was a human. She attended the Royal Masquerade frequently, a ball where one would wear a mask. Her card even states that "she appears in a new costume every hour." One of her costumes, the one depicted on her card, is that of an insect.

Later, a writer appropriated the image on the card into the new novel. Xira Arien has become an Insect Assassin (although the card would eventually give her the creature type Insect Wizard).

In the new iteration of Xira Arien, she would assassinate someone by injecting the target with her offspring. The host, if not killed, would mutate into an insectoid. So perhaps, she was herself infected between the two novels.

I'm taking this commander back to her first appearance; I decided to create a deck to send her off to the ball. There are masks and costumes that she could change into, and she is joined by a few other creatures that would meet her on the dance floor.
