Hello ! I'm -Sylex- and I'm back today with a deck that I really enjoy to play : Temur tempo deck ! As you can see on my profile page, I already brewed 2 Temur decks, a ''combo'' deck Generator's Genesis and a more midrangey one, Temur Budget. As an occasionnal homebrewer, I always focus on how my deck will ''feel'' when I play it and I often try to build something new from a defined concept, to explore a familiar idea from a different perspective. You may think that the Temur Frontier is all about bear-punching, big creatures and mindless midrange strategy. Maybe you're right ! But that's not what I had in mind when I brewed my deck. I went where I had never been before : Tempo !
Playstyle :
Tempo is how a player can set the pace of a game with his resources and take advantage of it. That's exactly what my deck is trying to do. Example : let's look at a common and powerful play that I'm able to do when I have 3 mana open by Turn 3, with
Temur Charm
and
Boon Satyr
in hand. Since both cards can be played as instants, you have the choice between countering a spell or casting a
Boon Satyr
at the end of their turn. That's really effective ! Cards like Dig Through Time refill your hand,
Heir of the Wilds
makes Courser of Kruphix and Sylvan Caryatid life's impossible, Crater's Claws make sure you wont get overwhelmed by a pesky
Goblin Rabblemaster
and creatures with flash such as
Boon Satyr
make sure you can keep the tempo lead early. Once you stalled the board in your favor in the 5-6 first turns of the game, bigger threats such as Savage Knuckleblade and
Prognostic Sphinx
with
Boon Satyr
bestowed upon will likely be able to push for the remaining life points and end the game. This deck is fun to play ! It runs smoothly and it does fairly well against a great number of matchups. If you plan to build this deck, you should adapt the sideboard for your local meta. For example, if your local meta is about big creatures midrangey decks, you may remove burn spells and add AEtherspouts or Turn to Frog, which are both really really good spells against tokens and permanent-heavy midrange decks. Same thing is true for Aggro-heavy or Control/Removal-Heavy meta's.
Core of the deck :
Creatures :
Boon Satyr
: The key creature of my deck and one of my favorite creature in Standard right now. This card is so powerful, efficient and versatile ! A great beater early on, you only want to cast it at the end of your opponents turn. As I said earlier, if you have 3 mana open by turn 3 you can either choose to counter a spell or cast this guy. You'll often, if not always, win tempo since
Boon Satyr
trades with 2 of the most important cards of Standard : Courser of Kruphix and Sylvan Caryatid. This creature synergizes very well with the rest of the deck ! If you have spare mana at later turns, you can bestow him upon a
Prognostic Sphinx
to make a already powerful threat into a 2-3 turn clock. If the opponent hasnt flipped his table after that, you probably just won !
Heir of the Wilds
: This creature is so efficient ! He's a all-star in my deckFirstly, it's not rare that he'll do 6-8 damage by himself across the game if left unchecked since he can trade 1 for 1 with almost everything in the format : No Courser of Kruphix/Sylvan Caryatid will stop this guy from dealing 2 or even 3 damage per turn. Plus, he can virtually remove any creature if he's paired with
Temur Charm
.
Prognostic Sphinx
: Another really powerful creature. The best thing about the sphinx is that he's good in almost every matchup and you'll never be dissapointed when you cast him by turn 5. He stabilizes against Aggro decks, ensure you draw good cards regularly against Midrange decks and protect himself against Control/Removal Heavy matchups. Plus if you bestow a
Boon Satyr
upon him, he'll turn into a 3 turn clock !Prophet of Kruphix : Even tho she has a poor body for 5 mana, she's well worth the cost ! Being able to cast ANY creature during your opponents turn is really, really huge. She's also like Rihanna : She's friend with the Monsters !! Prophet of Kruphix and Uncle Savage Knuckleblade are partners in crime since the day I first saw Savage Knuckleblade spoiled. You know, when you play against UG tempo, you have to worry about counterspells and you need to take a window of opportunity to cast your spells when your opponent is tapped out : This window of opportunity wont happen at all with Prophet of Kruphix.Savage Knuckleblade : That One-Ogre-Army Tempo king leads the charge ! Left unchecked, this creature wins the game in a blink of a eye, single-handedly. It is my favorite creature in Standard right now. This Ogre Warrior is one real Swiss-Army knife ( Or one Knuckleblade, eheh ) of a creature : He's resilient to removal, he can pump himself to deal with even the biggest creatures and he can even give himself haste and he's undercosted wow :-D !!Surrak Dragonclaw : Chuck Norris ! What are you doing here on Tarkir !? XD Just kidding. Ok let's start from the beggining : Its a 6/6 that cost 2 colorless, GUR with flash, It cannot be countered and... creatures you control cannot be countered... gives other creatures creatures you control trample... What the !!! He only lacks evasion, but when you have a 6/6, size and sheer power compensates for that !! He's very near to my heart since he's the leader of my favorite clan, Temur, and I had the foil promo version at my prerelease ! Sylvan Caryatid : The most expensive, but one of the most important playset in here. Since I dont actually own this playset, I have to borrow them if someone is kind enough to do so, or I play my 4 Rattleclaw Mystic. I prefer Caryatid, as she can do Rattleclaw Mystic's job while being immune to targeted removal. The only updside Mystic has over her is the fact that Rattleclaw Mystic can trade with
Goblin Rabblemaster
.Noncreature Spells :
Temur Charm
and
Stubborn Denial
: The key spells of this whole deck strategy. Counterspells, while being good, are meant to allow for some crazy mindgames and Tempo swings.
Temur Charm
is a versatile card as it acts as a counterspell and a removal option if needed and
Stubborn Denial
offers the best protection against, well, everything that is not a creature ( Hero's Downfall and such cards, Planeswalkers, Whip of Erebos, etc. ) for only one mana ! Keep one mana after casting a 4 or more power creature and you'll be able to face everything.Crater's Claws : What card is a Fireball and a Shock at the same time ? Well, I think you,ve guessed it... In short, this card acts as a medium burn spell when you dont have ferocious, but when you do have it , oh boy !! the more your army of
Boon Satyr
,
Heir of the Wilds
and Savage Knuckleblade brings the opponent low, the more dangerous it becomes for them : It,s common to end a game by turn 6-7 with Crater's Claws for 7 ! It's already hard to bring a Abzan deck down to his knees and Crater's Claws can definitely snatch a victory out of nowhere. Dig Through Time : Awesome card !!! It let's you search the top 7 cards of the library for 2 good cards and it's a instant, which means it can be played at the end of your opponent's turn. Dig is also really good because it gives a graveyard recursion effect, which is useful since the deck uses a lot of instants. The card is a bit pricy tho, If you want to make a budget version of my deck, I suggest you to replace this with Jace's IngenuityKiora, the Crashing Wave : This Planeswalker fits really well into this deck's strategy : She can nullify a threat turn after turn and stack her loyalty counters. Once her ult is online, it's GG ! a 9/9 Kraken each turn will overwhelm even the grindiest control deck.If you're expecting a Hero's Downfall, you have two choices : 1 : Wait until you have enough mana to cast Kiora and a counterspell on the same turn. Even if your opponent tries to kill Kiora, the Crashing Wave, she will give you card and board advantage ! Exactly what a tempo deck is looking for. 2 : If youre ahead on the board, you can -1 Kiora to trade a bit of Tempo for card advantage and ramp. Again, this is exactly what youre looking for in a Tempo deck !
Sideboard :
As I said earlier, the sideboard is always subject to changes. ''Learn to overcome, Adapt to win '' is the motto of the meta.
Conclusion :
Thanks for viewing my deck ! I'm really grateful and I know one thing for sure : My deck is subject to ameliorations !If you have any suggestions/tips/comments about this deck, I'll be really happy to hear them and answer them in the comment section below ! :-)
