Playlog 1.0 —Aug. 13, 2018

Played in a 5 man pod against Kess, Dissident Mage (bounce-discard theme), Saheeli, the Gifted (modified precon), Rashmi, Eternities Crafter (+1/+1 counters), and Lord Windgrace (unmodified precon).

Started out slow with lands and turn 3 Chromatic Lantern. Kess play played nothing but lands all turn. Saheeli started out pretty fast with Sol Ring and developed a pretty huge boardstate by turn 5. Rashmi plays a few dorks, Ezuri, Claw of Progress, and some graft creatures. Windgrace ramps pretty hard for 5 turns and slammed an Avenger of Zendikar turn 6 making a bunch of saproling tokens. He also got windgrace out before that which he makes the tokens even bigger.

By turn 7, windgrace has developed a pretty scary boardstate with over 10 worms (from Worm Harvest) and 12 saproling tokens. I seized the opportunity to Vampiric Tutor for a Massacre Wurm at his EOT. I played it during my turn and flicker it with Aminatou, the Fateshifter to wipe out most of everybody's board. Windgrace player immediately dies to lethal life loss from all of his tokens dying. At my EOT, the Rashmi player powered out a Marit Lage token. Due to his larger creatures thanks to Ezuri, Claw of Progress, most of them survived my wurm. With most players at a low life total due to the wurm, he played Overrun in an attempt to kill the rest of the table. Fortunately I have Utter End and the Kess player was at 41 life which went down to 1.

The Kess player played a Devastation Tide during his turn in an attempt to stabilize which resets everyone's board. He also somehow gained some life back. He then played Warped Devotion. The rest of the game is basically me attempting to kill the Kess player who is trying to get his bounce-discard lock online with Archaeomancer/Devastation Tide. The Rashmi player is basically taking collateral damage from the numerous Devastation Tide and tries to find a way to stabilize. With a bunch of creatures in my GY, I played Emeria Shepherd which got a few of my key creatures back from my GY. Eventually, I'm able to get Glen Elendra Archmage into play which stops his nonsense and proceed to win with infinite turns.

Conclusion: Fringe decks like the one the Kess player was playing took me by surprise at how resilient it is. By the time I've discovered what deck he was playing, he already was almost assembling his lock. Fortunately I'm able to navigate my way around to win. The new precons are surprisingly strong despite little to no modifications.

MVP: Massacre Wurm, Glen Elendra Archmage, Cloudblazer, and Emeria Shepherd.

  • Altar of the Brood: I think you should consider adding this as it enables more combos, it's very cheap to get out if you don't have a lot of mana left. And even without the combo pieces, it still quite good value. And with an infinite draw going you can put it out for 1 mana and win by just keep blinking.

  • Temporal Mastery: Sadly it is a one time use, but in this deck it will be a Time Walk very reliably, that seems to be way to good to pass up :)

  • Mnemonic Wall: You already have Archaeomancer, but an optimized build often have multiple of the same effects, and this seem to be one of the best effects in the deck for combos, and you can even reuse miracles with Aminatous +1.

Odysseus_97: Great suggestions. I've just added back Salvager of Secrets instead of Mnemonic Wall since it can be tutored with Recruiter of the Guard. I'm going to have to test out Altar of the Brood in my next iteration. Thanks!

Yes, did not think of that Salvager of Secrets is strictly better in with Recruiter of the Guard.

Would you consider turning on a change log for this list?

I'm eager to try this in paper after running and loving your Atraxa Superfriends deck, but am having a little trouble keeping up with where you're landing on testing day to day.

Thanks, and thanks for the good work here!
