Hello everyone, this is my attempt at Gruul Zoo for Modern! It's a straight-forward decklist, but a slightly different take from what you'll see in Naya Zoo builds. Here are a few reasons why I enjoy playing it:

  1. Burning-Tree Emissary :
This is a staple for the deck, as it most often allows you to throw down 1-2 additional cards on turn 2. Every so often, you'll have multiple Emissaries to chain off each other. At that point, you're in pretty good shape.

  2. Greedy R/G spells: Because this rendition of Zoo doesn't splash white, I personally find playing cards like Searing Blaze and Vines of Vastwood to be adequately consistent and doable. Vines can be especially sneaky in control matchups.

  3. Experiment One : Aside from perhaps Goblin Guide, this would be my favorite card to play on turn one. While drawing it in late-game may be lackluster, it can pack a punch if played early. It nearly always become a 2/2 and can quite easily become a 3/3 given the deck runs playsets of Kird Ape , Flinthoof Boar , and Boggart Ram-Gang.

  4. Atarka's Command : It goes without saying that Atarka's Command is a natural fit. I tend to use it as a Skullcrack more times than not. However, the "creatures you control get +1/+1..." option can blow out opponents without blockers and result in beneficial trades.

As far as the sideboard is concerned, you'll want to adapt it to the meta of your LGS. You don't necessarily have to add 4x Destructive Revelry, but it can help against matchups like Affinity and Tron. Molten Rain is my go-to for land destruction. Scavenging Ooze can be handy in a number of matchups. It can act as graveyard hate against Snapcaster Mage, delve, etc. as well as exile creatures to make it bigger and gain a bit of life. Dismember is great for Siege Rhino, Tasigur, the Golden Fang, and other creatures that may be a bit too big for us to handle otherwise. It's also handy against infect.

While this deck isn't too expensive, it can add up when you include the lands, Goblin Guides, and Commands. Budget versions of this deck are certainly doable, just bear in mind a couple of things:

  1. Maintain a high count of mountains and forests. This is important, as Kird Ape and Flinthoof Boar can be underwhelming without their static abilities. This also limits your opportunities to trigger evolve on Experiment One .

  2. If you reduce the amount of shocks/fetches, consider subbing out cards like Searing Blaze and Vines of Vastwood .

Note that Tarmogoyf is not included in this list. This is not an oversight, I just simply can't afford them. With that said, any ideas on how to improve the deck would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
