I so want more legendary gods as commanders YES PLEASE.

AwezomePozzum: I was thinking maybe they'd do Shards colors on these gods, since they already had mono-colored and dual-colored gods on Theros.

Hey, y'all! I finished the first draft of my Animar deck (colorless creature-based pseudo-storm; a more complete description is in the archived comments). But I need to cut 20 cards - anyone have any ideas what to cut?

Also, how would you construct a mana base where it's imperative I have red mana on T3 but I basically never need it again?

Cards marked "spanish" are ones I haven't acquired yet, so those would hopefully be the first to be cut.

So I was having a bit of an idea at work today: A lot of us have a decent lot of experience building decks, but I thought it might be interesting (seeing AwezomePozzum's deck) if we all tried designing custom commanders and then building decks around them.

I'm sure many of you have thought of designing custom cards before (I know I have) though it would be interesting to see people's ideas.

Thoughts?

I could also make cards for people, as I have a great application for doing so (Magic Set Editor, with lots of templates). Cardsmith is terrible by comparison, to be honest.

I like it. I may struggle to make a balanced commander but I look forward to the challenge of making my own card.

enpc: Sure, I'm interested. I've always enjoyed custom card-building, though I will be the first to note that I have trouble making balanced cards...

You know what would be fun? Creating overpowered commanders for all of the Oldwalkers and old legends that never got cards.

I want to make new cards for all the old elder dragons. Now, to learn how to digitally paint.

Lilbrudder: Part of the trick to balancing a card is to make sure you don't have it do too much. Everybody wants their legendary to do everything they want. You just need to pick an idea and hone in on that.

For example:

Trene, Maelstrom Navigator

Legendary creature - Elf

Whenever you cast a spell, you may exile target permanent you control. If you do, return it to the battlefield under its owners control.

Hi guys sorry I took so long to get to the party been a busy week! I might try and build one of these customs myself!

enpc: I hear you bro but its freaking Yawgmoth! He needs to be broken beyond belief and get the banhammer immediately. To be honest that wasnt really an attempt at a balanced commander. Your elf is ridiculously broke btw. 5 color elfball commander that abuses etb triggers and resets mana rocks EVERY time you cast a spell. Granted being 5 mana sort of balances it somewhat, but the second that hits the table its GG especially if you have a haste enabler. Its like paradox engine as a commander lol. I so wish it existed.

Lilbrudder: I get that Yawgmoth should be overpowered and I agree, but he needs to be like 10 mana for that kind of effect. REPEATABLE Yawgmoth's Will?!?!? Lol.

Lol only if you cast 4 or more spells in a turn. Its not as if he provides free cards or anything to make that happen...

Lilbrudder: I'll admit that getting 4 spells in a turn is harder in black than, say, Grixis...but it's still not enough to balance a 4-mana repeatable Will, lol.

If you activate him once, you should be able to cast enough rituals/tutors/draw spells to activate him every turn for the rest of the game.

I suppose I could add a few more clauses like as an additional cost to cast Yawgmoth Reborn sacrafice a land and a creature or add some other kind of poison pill or restriction. Then again I think that Yawgmoth must be a merger between Yawgmoth's Will and Yawgmoth's Bargain. To do anything less would be an insult to his unholy name. Of the two abilities the draw ability is far more degenerate. At minimum your drawing 10 cards off of it.

One poison pill for the yawgwin ability could be at the end of this turn you lose the game. Or an enter the battlefield effect that gives you an emblem that says skip your draw step for the rest of the game. That way you could stifle the effect somehow, but it would make you think twice about activating or casting him

n0bunga: I like the direction it's going. Not sure how I feel about the -9 but other than that it's cool.

Lilbrudder: I know Yawgmoth is supposed to be broken :P If he Magus of the Will'd (i.e. exiled himself) to do his thing then it might be a little more balanced. Plus you could get rid of the 4 card requirement.

And yeah, I get that the elf is broken. I might make her a 1/2 instead. I love Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder and Paradox Engine, but I wanted to make somethign that had hints of both. Plus being able to run Maelstrom Nexus in a deck is really nice.
