I f#!king hate Delver. I've been playtesting against a Delver deck for the last week, and NOTHING I make can beat it. I haven't even looked at other top tier decks in Standard b/c Delver pisses me off so much. Who first thought up that obnoxious crap? Does Wizards have some huge love affair with Unbeatable UW Control in Standard? F#!k Delver in its snap-casting, geist-loving, insect-touching ear.
Haha you said butt.
You need card:Grafdigger's Cage to stop flashback shenanigains. I found Ground Seal prevents snapcasting and Reanimation. Oh and deathtouch stops delver. Things with deathtouch stop pretty much everything else. card:Tormod's Crypt and Torpor Orb are fun too. You might as well just play a turbofog with w/ all the above.
I'd suggest looking at some other top-tier decks, if you look at starcitygames.com standard lists, you'd find some pretty interesting things. Mono-black mid-range is one of the things I would look at. For your deck in particular, you might want to consider Mutilate , card:Black Sun's Zenith, and to a lesser extent Killing Wave
Note: TappedOut made the most useless suggestions. It suggested Dragonlair Spider , Dragon Broodmother , Gauntlet of Power , Azusa, Lost but Seeking Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker AND Vexing Shusher were all suggested TWICE. Apparently, Standard Mono-Black is just not what this website wants to see. I'm going to address the humans now, who actually have a clue about what I'm trying to do here.
Jokernaught: I'm glad to see you again! Yes, I did have butt at first, but I didn't think I was inflicting enough suffering. The new kill spell in Return to Ravnica is gonna be GO FOR THE EAR. What would a good turbofog look like? Here's some s#!t I threw together: Hotboxin' the arena. It seems like most people are playing UGly colors. I picked green white. Feedback there would be appreciated too!
JamesHughes: Gut shot could work. Doom Blades to sideboard, 3 gut shot? What if I used Tragic Slip ? I'm also not married to horrifying revelation or mental agony, but I found that the best trick with MBC is to make your opponent discard everything ASAP, then kill what remains. I've been looking at Killing Wave too.
sp3ctralr1pp3r: I usually prefer to home-brew, but I think you're right in this case. I'm likely to find some good ideas in the top-tier mono-black mid-range decklists. I think I used up all my hyphens for this paragraph. I do like Mutilate and BSZ. Should I swap out the spot removal for board wipe? A balance of both?
Thank you to everyone who gave me feedback so far!
You may be unable to beat delver because you are playing monoblack control. Delver is fair and beatable, it has a win record of about 51% in tournaments that record their winners decklists. Run Gut Shot for delver, run Cavern of Souls for their counterspells, and you may want to switch to aggro if you are JUST trying to beat delver. But delver isn't close to Caw Blade, you're really just trying to beat it with monoblack control, a deck that has no competitive record of being good. There's no reason you can't play it, but don't be surprised when it doesn't win against a tournament tested and popular deck.
HAhahahahaha. No really Hughes, don't sugarcoat your feelings for Lili. :P So guys, what DOES beat Delver? Zombies? Pod? Esper Midrange? Wolf Run? I'm not necessarily looking to netdeck, but I've been pretty surprised at how difficult Delver can be to beat. Once I can find something that beats it, I was planning on testing against various other top tier decks. The article I studied the most was this: http://www.channelfireball.com/articles/carrie-on-%E2%80%93-the-changing-face-of-standard/
Thanks again for all the help everyone has been providing!
You either need a deck that can outlast delver, or a deck that can out-run delver, If you want to outrun, I'd suggestion going some form of Green aggro or Zombies, because if they don't outrun, they can outlast. Really any of these decks can beat Delver, especially since M13 came out. I've been taking a look at placing in tournaments and Delver is maybe only 25-30% of top 8's (at starcitygames.com). Keep in mind however, that the statistic presented to you is my (very)rough estimate. Any of these decks are capable. Keep in mind however, that Delver can also beat Delver =D
