Description

I recently made a lot of changes to this deck. The original aggro plan with Soul-Scar Mage and Stormchaser Mage was not working. I've gone to a more controlling version of the deck, still taking advantage of many of the same synergies.

So far in testing Enigma Drake has been incredibly powerful. The deck has massive amounts of card draw, and ways to get spells into the grave to fuel Bedlam Reveler and Enigma Drake. We're also running Drake Haven to take advantage of the discard and cycling. The removal suite will change a lot based on the meta. In testing the deck has been very powerful and has shown a lot of potential. We need more people playtesting it to find the best version so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Leave a +1 if you like the deck!

Edit

This deck has not really performed well against the meta decks since nothing was banned. It's a super fun deck to play, but I don't think it's a very serious competitor. I've made a somewhat similar deck that I think can be much more competitive. You can check it out here...

Thank you for all your suggestions and support! Let's continue to test new decks and make this a better Standard!

Any thoughts on Thermo-Alchemist? Also, how has the Stormchaser Mage been performing, I've always wanted him to play a role in constructed. Other than that I think the name should be enigma burn. What are your thoughts on Shock cause if you're trying to fill you're graveyard than Galvanic Bombardment could be a better choice.

Well, the only reason I'm running Stormchaser Mage instead of Thermo-Alchemist, is that it survives Sweltering Suns. I prefer Thermo-Alchemist, but I think surviving that wrath effect is a big enough deal to go with Stormchaser.

The reason I have Shock over Galvanic Bombardment is that Shock stops the Cat Combo. Also being able to burn face is always nice.

I like the name Enigma Burn. What about like Cryptic Enigma or something?

Thanks so much for your comment!

OOoooo, I didn't even think about sweltering suns, that makes sense now. Also ya, I guess cat combo is something I should of thought about. Finally I like Cryptic Enigma, but I feel like it is missing something, how about something like Enigmic Control.

Do you think it's a control deck? I think it's more of a tempo deck.

I don't know for sure, I just wanted to see how it sounds. I think you should ponder over enigma or enigmatic something.

Yeah I like that. I'll go for Enigma Burn right now. Thanks!

What are you thoughts on Cryptic Serpent, theoretically it would work really well in the deck?

tedaboy159 says... #8

RaisingCain18, funny you should mention that because I just cut Cryptic Serpent. I like the card a lot, but I felt like I didn't have enough instants and sorceries when I was running a couple. I'm not really willing to cut any of the other creatures for it either. I'll keep considering it as I playtest.

I love this deck man, have you thought about Thing in the Ice  Flip it seems like it would have potential in this deck and it survives Sweltering Suns

I do like Thing in the Ice  Flip. Before when I considered it the deck was much more burn-oriented. But now it might be better so I'll try it. Thanks for your comment!

what about collective defiance and baral!?

April 19, 2017 6:21 p.m.

tedaboy159 says... #14

I like Collective Defiance. I might try it but usually you want to cast it for 4 or 5 mana which is somewhat difficult in a 21 land deck.

Baral, Chief of Compliance doesn't belong here because he can't beat down at all really.

How well has 3x Sweltering Suns mainboard performed for you? I've found that, while the cycling is very handy, 3 mana is a bit too steep to run more than 1 of that card.

tedaboy159 says... #17

That's a slot that will definitely depend on the meta. In certain match-ups I will want 4, others I will want 0. As of right now, 3 seems the best. I've tested against quite a few aggro decks so that's why.

thing it the ice is much better than stormchaser for a finisher and efficiency, also enigma drake already does stormchasers job but better

April 24, 2017 4:13 p.m.

Venersis says... #19

also to add to my previous point if you already have bedlam reveler you have 10 unblockable power on the field

So including your 5 cycle cards, you have 15 discard effects, and while you can capitalize on them with Bedlam Reveler and Enigma Drake, I think you could use a couple Drake Haven, I would put 2 in either the sideboard or mainboard.

You're keen on the Suns MB, so I would drop some Fevered Visions for Drake Haven. You'd obviously side out Suns for Haven, or vise-versa, as the drakes can't survive Suns.

Though I know Shock stops Copycat, I still think Galvanic Bombardment deserves a place here. I'd bring 2 Magma Spray in the main over Soul-Scar Mage as I think four-of is a bit much (to me, his main purpose is burning and early game beats, while the fliers are the combat powerhouses). You have Incendiary Flow which can stop recurring threats like Scrapheap Scrounger, but being able to deal with them at instant speed mainboard is crucial.

This should leave you enough room in the Sideboard for the set of Galvanic Bombardment if you drop the 2 remaining Visions. The extra slot can be left for the remaining Spray, or another Lightning Axe.

The last edit should be the mana base. This is a fast deck, so having five lands that always come in tapped is a bit dangerous. I'd drop the Highland Lake for Geier Reach Sanitarium for looting. And drop two each of Fumarole and Bluffs for some basics.

This all said, I love the deck and will definitely be trying it out.

Thank you for your comments! I actually am thinking of reworking this deck a lot. The prowess aggro strategy isn't really working out too well so far in testing. I'm thinking of going with a more midrange oriented build that finishes the game with Cryptic Serpent and Enigma Drake. I'll start working on the changes now.

WeWhoSaidWhat says... #22

I'm not sure Cryptic Serpent is worth while. Sure, he can get out on turn 3 at the earliest if you are lucky, and don't interact with your opponent at all, but he kind of just sits there without any relevant combat abilities. No trample or flying or even prowess. I don't really think he is worth his slots. You could try out Slip Through Space, but I'm not sure that would fix the issue completely. What is nice about your other creatures is their relevance late game. What was nice about Stormchaser Mage was his early threat that worked well on curve. Even when removed, his prowess paved the way for a larger Enigma Drake.

I think Chandra is worth the MB slot.

WeWhoSaidWhat, I see what you're saying. I'be been testing this deck a lot and Stormchaser Mage and Soul-Scar Mage just seemed a little weak. I haven't done enough testing with this new version so maybe I'll revert back I'm not sure. At 6/5 he doesn't really just sit their though. 6/5 is kind of a big deal in standard right now.

I'll look into Chandra, Torch of Defiance mainboard.

Thanks for your comment!
