Sideboard

Mono- WW

Been playing this in paper for the past year. Here is the breakdown of the deck.

Before we begin, everything in the deck is a soldier or generates soldiers (except for the 1/1 spirit that doomed leaves behind).

The deck plays 9 1-drops with Icatian Javelineers for removing X/1's and Thraben Inspector for card draw. The Gideon's Lawkeeper is a flex slot, I found more effective at stopping large threats that the deck normally can't deal with.

We are playing 18 2-drops. The most important 2 drop is easily Kor Skyfisher because it's really efficient beater in the air and the return clause we are abusing to draw more cards (Thraben Inspector, Secluded Steppe), kill more X/1's ( Icatian Javelineers ), Gain life (Kabira Crossroads), Give protection ( Sejiri Steppe ), re-buys flipped creatures ( Loyal Cathar   ), and generate more tokens (bounce a land > Retrace Cenn's Enlistment ). Porcelain Legionnaire is essentially a 2-drop as we will be paying the 2-life 90% of the time, a 3/1 with first strike is a bit fragile but worth it. Loyal Cathar   is also a serviceable creature as 2/2 with vigilance on one side, and as a 2/1 when it dies (also zombie SOLIDER). A solid playset of Raise the Alarm for the instant speed 1/1's for recovery and dodge and rounding out the slots are 2 Veteran Armorsmith for protection against board wipes and longevity in combat.

The 3-drops consist of the most important cards in the deck. 4 Veteran Swordsmith is what holds the deck together, it's why every creature in the deck is a soldier and provides insurmountable pressure to our opponents. Untapping with this card will win you the game and If your playing against the deck this is that card that must be Bolted or the one you hold counterspells for. As of the other spells Unmake is a solid removal spell, this slot used to belong to Sunlance but with the ever-presence of bolt most bigger creatures are larger than lance can handle therefore Unmake is a better option. The rest of the slots are flexible, I play 1 Gempalm Avenger which I classify as three drop combat spell that screws math and uncounterable. The other two 1-of's are Angelic Purge and Prismatic Strands as catch-alls.

At the top of the deck we have 2 Cenn's Enlistment for longevity. Utility lands can be tweaked to your needs, I play 3 Secluded Steppe because I found 4 to be too many. 2 Kabira Crossroads seems to be the right number, we are not playing Radiant Fountain because the incredibly intensive on white mana. 1 Sejiri Steppe for pushing through damage, have considered going up to 2.

Sideboard consists of:

  • 3 Prismatic Strands for mono-coloured and combo decks to blank the turn they go off or kill us.

  • 3 Sundering Growth for the affinity, enchantress and bogles and because in some situations it's slightly better than Disenchant.

  • 2 Sunlance for Delver, Nivix, Themo match-ups.

  • 1 Veteran Armorer and 2 Veteran Armorsmith for protection against damage based wipes and the mirror.

  • 2 Celestial Flare for bogles and big creatures.

  • 1 Angelic Purge as a catch-all and 1 Mana Tithe cause no-one expects it.
