Sideboard

The Magic community has been in an uproar ever since the printing of Companions. Many people realized that the mechanic and the cards themselves are powerful to the point of being broken, and companion decks have since taken over nearly every constructed format they're legal in. This all points to the conclusion that companions are totally busted--but is that really all they can do? Should we simply settle for the mere ousting of every eternal formats' hierarchies of power? The answer is no. And today, I will prove that none of you have scratched the surface of their true potential.

As you may know, Companions each impose deck building restrictions in order for them to be played from outside the game. But since it's tedious to check every deck, Wizards decided to enforce the rule by issuing automatic losses if one would play or otherwise show that their deck contains an illegal card. Because of this, it is now possible for a player to win the game before the game starts. Here's how you do it:

  1. Reveal Lurrus as Companion
  2. Mulligan Serum Powder
  3. Lose the game in the mulligan phase.

A fair warning: this combo deck is extremely competitive. It's the only deck in any 60-card constructed format that can consistently end the game before the game has even started; playing this deck in tournament may even result in bans and disqualifications due to its overwhelming power.

In short, LURRUS IS BROKEN!!

(Note: This deck is satire and was made to protest against the companion mechanic pre-rule-change; companions have been less dominant since the companion tax was established on June 1, 2020. That said, if you think about it, this deck is the most resilient of all the companion decks since the rule change didn't affect it at all!)
