Hey let's hate on the Meta! (Esper control)

Modern* WUB (Esper)

Bbth3Gunna

Sideboard

Best spot removals in the format, best sweepers in the format, best man lands in the format, most versatility in cards for those pesky meddling mage decks, tons of access to card advantage, best board colors/cards in the format for the broadest variety of decks, combo breakers/stoppers and oh yeah... JaFerie the dream team and the new members to the party T3 and The Parter of Veils.

Serum visions? Who needs that card, that's not card advantage, we are esper we thrive on more resources than our opponent and making sure everything we do is at least a 1 for 1 that leads to us making 2 for 1s. Let's get into it.

We pack removal in every way we can think. They have a creature and you don't like it? We got it covered with spot removal. They have lots of little critters that want to kill you dead? We have that covered with sweepers. They have scary things happening in their graveyard? We have it covered with main deck graveyard hate. They have Planeswalkers or combo spells? We have those covered too with counter spells. The best part of all of this? That's just main deck. When we goto the side board we can pull out any of those things we don't need to handle and plug in even more goodies to just really oppress that strategy our opponents are trying to do to us.

Ok... Ok... So if we have all this how do we possibly have room to win the game? We have manlands to kill them dead or we have plenty of things that dig through our deck to find that perfect Planeswalker to lock them out.

ALL we have to do is make a land drop every turn, off 24 lands, and survive till we drop a walker and run away with everything? I think we got this. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING could go wrong... Or could it? O.o

Small tips and tricks:

  1. Esper charm hits enchantments don't forget it. (Looking at you leyline, when we are trying to fate seal you to Oblivion).

  2. When you "tuck away" a problem with Teferie, don't forget which turn they will draw it again and try to force your opponent to shuffle it away with field of ruin or set up a Jace to fate seal it from them.

  3. Be patient, Don't rush to close games, you'll find the more you play the deck that if you survive to turn 5-6 and did it decently efficient that you'll have most of your match ups under a Massive card disadvantage and have so much control it feels impossible to lose. Do not let that fool you into thinking you can't. Make sure the same things you did to get you to that position you keep doing over and over and over. (Discards on your opponent with charm, using removal or counters on the proper things, ect.)

  4. Your sideboard has answers to so many things you just have to figure out how to get it done, for example: (surgical extraction does so much more than just hurting combo decks, against jeskai/UW control if you hit a 4 of "cryptic command", "Snapcaster" in their deck or a Teferie/Jace with it, the matchup becomes incredibly hard for them.

  5. Don't forget all your modes with cryptic command (also when using snapcaster bouncing your snap back to your hand can be very very devistating for your opponent)

  6. Don't forget all your modes with esper charm ( it draws it discards, and it kills ENCHANTMENTS, Looking at you blood moon, Aria of flame and many others)

Good luck and have fun!
