The Apocalypse has Begun!!! (EDH Tribal Series #3)

Commander / EDH* Lifegain Reanimator Tokens Tribal W/U/B (Esper) Zombie

Third deck in my EDH Tribal Series. You can find the rest of the decks here.

With Amonkhet's arrival zombies are viable now more than ever. Zombies such as Lord of the Accursed, Diregraf Captain, Risen Executioner, Undead Warchief, Lord of the Undead, Death Baron, and Mikaeus, the Unhallowed provide ways boosts to our zombies and make them more than your average undead horde.

This deck also strives to create tons of tokens (looking at you Army of the Damned and Endless Ranks of the Dead) and to gain bits of life using your zombies so that you can stay alive long enough to overwhelm your opponents. Using your undead army of tokens The Scarab God can deal a decent amount of damage to an opponent every turn. The Scarab God can acumulate lots of damage due to the fact that he can only be defeated through exile, the end step after The Scarab God dies it just returns to your hand to be cast again.

I know that Oloro, Ageless Ascetic isn't a zombie, but he fit my colors and gains me life. I doubt he will leave the command zone much.

As always comments, critiques, and suggestions are highly encouraged.

I've taken all your suggestions from the past while and swapped out what I felt needed to be swapped. All your help has really helped this deck become more refined. In addition to your help as I come across cards I make changes where I feel they are needed. Some examples of this is swapping Liliana's Elite for The Scarab God and Festering Mummy for Rooftop Storm.

Special thanks goes out to Shadow12721 for suggesting some great cards and really helping the deck. Thanks for al the help everyone!

maybe throw in Dread Wanderer

SpiritoftheSands, I had Dread Wanderer in while I was brainstorming, but he was cut because I didn't have enough room and felt other zombies/spells were more effective and useful.

In Garruk's Wake instead of Plague Wind, unless you have a lot of creatures that regenerate.

Thanks for the suggestion! In Garruk's Wake will definitely be replacing Plague Wind.

Glad I could help! Also, Liliana, the Last Hope is awesome if you can afford it.

Shadow12721, I've been thinking about her for the past few days trying to figure out what to cut for her. Liliana, the Last Hope goes great with my token theme. I finally decided to cut Scourge of Nel Toth for her.

I kept forgetting to put her in1, so thanks for commenting and suggesting it. You forced me to finally do it. :P

Since you're not planning on casting Oloro, have you considered playing some of the partners? Ravos, Soultender seems great for rebuying zombies, and then you could play either the UB or UW partner to fill out your colours.

PlattBonnay, during my brainstorm I considered a partner pair of Ravos, Soultender and either Silas Renn, Seeker Adept or Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker. Ravos, Soultender and Silas Renn, Seeker Adept where a real contender for the commander. Ravos would be good because I can get creatures back, but I feel like Silas Renn is more for an artifact deck. I like Oloro, Ageless Ascetic because he can just sit in the command zone and gain me life.

However, now that you bring it up and I've thought about it Ravos, Soultender and Silas Renn, Seeker Adept might be a better pair for my commander than Oloro, Ageless Ascetic.

Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it

I just playtested, and while Ravos would have been a useful commander, Oloro actually kept me alive and technically won me the game due to life totals. I was playing 1v1 against a Cascade Superfriends deck.

Well is this supposed to be a 1v1 deck Darkshadow327? Because 1v1 commander (mtgo or paper) is a very different format, and I think that if this deck is supposed to be played in a 1v1 environment, there's a lot that should change.

Shadow12721, thanks for the play testing! I've been meaning to do some testing on Untap. Did the tokens work? If you could message my profile and tell me how the play testing went that would be great.

PlattBonnay, I'm not really sure what format of commander this would do best in. However, I do feel like this deck would be better in 1v1 circumstances.

I can't believe you don't run an Anointed Procession since you have a lot of token generators.

You really should!

Also, Throne of the God-Pharaoh because a LOT of zombies enter the battlefield tapped.

Otherwise, seems like quite a resilient zombie deck. +1 from me to you!

I knew I was forgetting something! This whole time I have been trying to remember Anointed Procession once I realized this generated lots of tokens. Thanks for the suggestion!

Beacon of Unrest over Rise from the Grave

Do you find this has enough card draw? what about Cryptbreaker, Graveborn Muse, or Distant Melody

I also am a fan of Undead Alchemist which generates a ton of tokens in multiplayer, but my decks point is to Mill

Force_of_Willb, I really appreciate the comment and suggestions. I do agree Beacon of Unrest is better than Rise from the Grave. However, the point of this deck isn't really to draw cards. Also, with the amount of tokens this deck has the possibility of making Graveborn Muse could potentially backfire and leave you weakened/dead.

In the early stages Undead Alchemist was under consideration because my friend built a deck around him and it totally works, but after a while I just felt that he didn't quite fit the deck. However, now that The Scarab God is out I feel Undead Alchemist could synergize well with him. This means that Undead Alchemist might finally have a home in this deck.

Thanks for the suggestions!

My first thought after reading through this is, is it really worth splashing white in this deck? You only have a few white cards, and might be better off with just black and blue. This allows you to have a commander that is more useful to your strategy, and in my opinion you really aren't losing much by cutting the white out.

Dark Salvation. Is awesome removal, plus etb effects, plus zombies. How is this NOT in your deck? ;-)

dthoreson813, Dark Salvation did cross my mind when I was initially making this deck. However, I've been having trouble finding room for it. :P

dthoreson813, I did find room for Dark Salvation by taking out Fatal Push. In the case of commander I feel Dark Salvation is better removal than Fatal Push.

Living Death and Grimgrin, Corpse-Born are both good cards to add in the deck.

Also I'm surprised no Grave Titan is in the deck, he's an all-star zombie.

Also hate to be that guy, but what do you think of Ravos, Soultender and a blue partner Commander at helm? Ravos allows you to recur creatures you want in the hand and is also a lord. The second partner would be up to you but I'd recommend Silas Renn, Seeker Adept in tandem with him.

Hope this helps and this is an awesome deck!

In this deck, Dark Salvation can take care of a BUNCH of annoyances from the other side of the board.

Thanks for the update, and be sure to lmk how it works out for you!

Triton, I actually had that partner commander pair in the deck, but I felt Oloro, Ageless Ascetic was just better because he can just sit in the command zone and gain me life. As for the other creatures and Living Death, I had all those under consideration. However, there just isn't room enough for everything. :P
