Update 6/08/19

This is the first deck I added to Tappedout and the the first deck I built after coming back to Magic. It's gone through several revisions over the last few years and still holds a very fond place in my heart as far as decks go. It's still not the most competitive deck but I sure do enjoy playing it.

As much as I love seeing Angels back in standard, I feel like the most recent additions have made Modern Angel decks even better, so that's what I've done here. I'm not going to change anything below for now since it all reflects what's been going on since I first put this deck together. Modern Horizons only helped make this better too. Enjoy!

A First Word

I made this deck several years ago when I first got back into MTG with a wild sense of nostalgia for an Angels deck I had when I was 13. After playing a few times, I've made some significant adjustments and have finally updated it now.

Main Deck Explained:

The primary strategy with this deck used to be to get out and use Angelic Accord with all the other life-gains this deck has in it and overwhelm your opponent with high-powered Angel Token's.

With the addition of Resplendent Angel I've pulled Accord and use creatures to create more creatures.

Until very recently I played a G/W version of this deck to capitalize on Shalai, Voice of Plenty's ability and use Blossoming Defense to keep her alive. The green added a Ramp component with Avacyn's Pilgrim that I've also taken out in favor of a 1/1 Flying/Vigilance Angel for one white mana.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope is my lady! Unfortunately, she is just so damn expensive to play in this deck. So she's moved over to my EDH Angels deck. Such an awesome card on so many levels.

Maybeboard Explained

All these cards are the ones I moved from the previous version of the deck so I can remember what I used to have there.

Budget Friendly Options

I guess since Iv'e been working on this deck for quite a while, I've also spent a bit along the way. There are some budget-friendly options which you can sub-out for some of these cards and still make this deck effective. I suggest the following:

Ghostly Prison (about $15) can be replaced with Sphere of Safety (about $0.71)

Path to Exile (about $10) can be replaced with Pacifism (about $0.07) or Condemn (about $0.14) or Swords to Plowshares (about $2.30) but just remember that last one is not Modern Legal.

Avacyn, Angel of Hope (about $25.00) can be replaced with Avacyn, Guardian Angel (about $0.50)

A Last Word

I think with these changes, I'll be able to make this deck a little more competitive and still remain true to the theme of the deck. I'm determined to make Angels work and work effectively. I think I strayed away from the idea of this deck with the last revisions and now I think I'm working my way back-on-track: Mono-White Angels in Modern!

Updates Add

So despite needing serious adjustment in the description, I'm adding a quick update.

This current version beat out Tron Eldrazi, Artifacts, and mono red burn. Granted, they all won game one as they are pretty quick and tough to deal with decks and the sideboard proved crucial to my follow-on wins. If I can get enough time to establish an angel on my board, I'm pretty set for the game.

The sideboard is tailored to the top tiered decks in modern and seems pretty standard as far as that goes. The mainboard is designed to deal with a creature-heavy deck (like Eldrazi), and then you side out creature removal in favor of whatever you're up against.

I almost exclusively had to tough out the first few turns of every game until I could get an Angel on the board. Resplendent Angel is frigging amazing in this deck and actually provides early game board stability better than I thought she would. Baneslayer Angel and Lyra Dawnbringer are VERY heavy closers and really tough to deal with once they're on the table.

All-in-all, I had a ton of fun and will try to take this to a more competitive venue later this week and see how it does.
