Maybeboard

Since its introduction in Iceage, I have loved the Jank of Snow in MTG. I really just want a commander deck with all the fun Snow cards. With the release of Modern Horizons, there are finally enough playable cards to make an EDH deck.

So this started as a Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle Simic ramp into big sea monsters, splashing snow good stuff.

Then it became a Ikra Shidiqi, the Usurper // Thrasios, Triton Hero Sultai to get some of the new sweet snow black cards.

Then while searching for ideas, I found a non-red snow-theme stax/artifact deck, called snowmen.

Using that as a base, I've made many changes and Ravos, Soultender // Thrasios, Triton Hero are put at the helm. Keep the Simic core for ramp and draw. Then Splash in White and Black when needed. Thrasios gives me good draw and a solid chance for more land plays. Ravos for late game grave digging.

I try and include as many snow block and Modern Horizon cards that I can. Swords to Plowshares solid spot removal and printed in Ice Age, it goes in. Diabolic Vision, aka Ponder Harder, it mostly works with what I'm doing and I like the art, it goes in.

In the history of me playing this deck, there have been two better snowmanders printed: Jorn, God of Winter   and Isu the Abominable Since about 85% of the deck is snow cards, Jorn is straight value. The back half Kaldring, the Rimestaff   does a better job then Ravos, Soultender getting good cards back. Isu gives value like Bolas's Citadel or The Reality Chip, but also get grow bigger pretty easy. The reason I have not taken this deck apart to make them the commanders is simple, I like this deck better as a 4-color deck.

  • Cutting removes my best tutors and Glacial Plating on Jorn is a great combo.
  • Cutting removes my board wipes, several flying blockers, and Rime Transfusion.
  • The only snow-themed cards that would be interesting are: Skred and Ohran Yeti. Not enough to push the deck into 5 colors.
  • Opening Hands & Mulligans

At it's core, the deck is Simic. Most of the low drops are and/or , including Thrasios, Triton Hero. So you are looking for at least three that at least cover that spread. Two lands with something like Into the North, Nature's Lore, Diabolic Vision, or Glacial Revelation can work. Mulligan a hand that can only do .

    Early Game

The general goal is to get to a critical mass of snow-permeants as fast as possible and to live long enough to exploit it. Thrasios, Triton Hero is the obvious way to ramp lands into play. Sword of the Animist and an early creature like Icehide Golem, Ice-Fang Coatl, or Ascendant Spirit is a great opener. Until you get enough snow stuff, play Propaganda like cards or good blockers like Drift of the Dead. Once you have 8-10 snow-lands, all your closers are online.

    Closing Threats

There are two ways to make Marit Lage in the deck. Marit Lage's Slumber is the easiest way to make our big 20/20 friend. Also the scrying works really well with Thrasios, Triton Hero. I also run the classic combo, Dark Depths + Thespian's Stage . I run zero ways to get enchainments or lands back from the graveyard. So once those cards are in the bin, Marit Lage is off the table for the rest of the game for you.

These are the best late game threats:

  • Abominable Treefolk: One of the best threats and comes down early.
  • Conifer Wurm: The activated ability is expensive, but I run Training Grounds.
  • Rimefeather Owl: Counts all snow permanents and can make non-snow permanents snow. Just remember that ice counters stay if the owl gets removed, but the effect that turns those permanents into snow permanents only works when the owl is in play.
  • Spirit of the Aldergard: Weaker then the Treefolk, but also tutors a snow-land.
  • Jorn, God of Winter   with any of these Glacial Plating + Rime Transfusion + Snow Devil
  • Isu the Abominable is just so good in this deck. It will be replacing Diamond Faerie. They have the same CMC, but this lets me have a growing threat and some card advantage. Plus it synergizes with Thrasios, Triton Hero.
