Welcome to my Thassa, God of the Sea Commander Deck! This deck is mono-blue ramp so you can play big and scary sea creatures that are difficult to deal with. I decided to make this Commander deck when I opened a foil Thassa, God of the Sea at my Journey into Nyx Prerelease. After a few years of testing and updating the list throughout the years, I'm going to write this competitive guide to playing this Commander deck. Also, inputting my decklist on this website will allow me to keep track of the changes that will be made to this deck as more and more sets are released.

This deck is for a more casual game experience, but still can very well put up a good fight against even the most competitive of decks. All this deck wants to do is to cast big disgusting sea creatures and swing in for massive damage by giving them all unblockable from Thassa, God of the Sea . This deck also takes a break away from the idea that blue Commander decks just sit and draw cards. So go forth my champion, and show off the power (and toughness) of blue!

The general strategy in this deck is very simple; Turn cards sideways. If you're not turning cards sideways, find the problem that is preventing you from turning cards sideways, get rid of it, then turn cards sideways. Having this kind of strategy in a mono-blue deck can be very surprising and scary to your opponents at first. If your playgroup has other mono-blue decks, they're most likely used to the "I'm just gonna sit here, draw cards, and combo off over here" kind of deck. Well, welcome to the exact opposite.

The first thing that you want to prioritize when playing this deck is mana. When choosing your mulligans, be sure to have a hand that allows you to have the most mana possible. Feel free to look at the Ramp and Land section of this deck for examples. Having big scary creatures and spells in your hand are practically worthless if you don't have the means to cast them, so ramp is the direction you want to head. Now that the game has begun, time to play out all of that ramp!

Since you have been aggressively taken mulligans to find mana, you hand should look a little light in the creature department. The solution: cast Thassa, God of the Sea . Her start-of-turn scry trigger should accumulate so much advantage throughout the game, drawing creatures that impact the board should not be a problem. Once you're ready to cast some of your MONSTERS, you've probably gathered the attention of your opponents thinking you're planning something. What I like to do is to play out some smaller threats like Reef Worm or Chasm Skulker to try and bait out your opponent's removal spells early so you can play out your bigger creatures without worrying about their survival.

Once you think you have a dominant board position, time to swing big. Some creatures in this deck can't be blocked already, but by using Thassa, God of the Sea 's low cost of two mana to make a creature unblockable, your entire team is a threat to be reckoned with. All of that ramp wasn't for nothing! Dumping all of that mana into making your team unblockable is a worthwhile investment which can kill your opponents in a heart beat. Swallow their ship whole!

This deck doesn't have too many synergies other than the general theme of beating your opponents' faces, but there are a few trick you can perform with your unblockable creatures. Either by using Thassa, God of the Sea herself, or by using creatures that already can't be blocked like Deep-Sea Kraken , you can combine their unblockability with Coastal Piracy or Bident of Thassa . This allows you to gain some well needed card advantage while pummeling your opponents to the ground (or sea in this case).

Other synergies is with Minamo, School at Water's Edge . With this card, you can give psudo-vigilance to Thassa, God of the Sea , Lorthos, the Tidemaker , or other legendary creatures. Minamo, School at Water's Edge also works really well with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx to make a literal metric ton of mana. Even with all of this, I think the best way to utilize this card is to combine it with Arcanis the Omnipotent to draw up to 6 cards in a turn cycle.
