Thada Adel, Aquisitor

We all want things we can't have. Being a decent human being is accepting that.

We want to build the most wonderful collection in the world: The Thada Adel deck wants to steal everyone's artifacts and keep them forever. This deck isn't super competitive, but as a thematic deck it's very fun to play with. It doesn't aim to voltron too much as killing people would mean we lose all their artifacts, but we do have the option to do it if necessary.

The Battleplan

We want to ramp into Thada as fast as possible, then steal other people's ramp. With the huge amount of ramp we want to steal all the nice things and continue to steal :D. The deck will win or lose by how much mana it has to take advantage of it.

Mana Base

We don't need any fetch lands really in this deck; the majority of our ramp comes from artifacts. Similarly we have a lower land count due to the large amount of mana rocks

  • Seat of the Synod and Darksteel Citadel both provide us artifacts that can trigger or be abused by synergy
  • Blue Mana Battery lets us sink extra mana into the battery at the end of turns to be used when we need it.
  • Explorer's Scope is extra value from swinging in and cheap enough to fish out with things like Tezzeret.
  • Journeyer's Kite similar to the battery let's us sink our extra mana into consistent land drops.

Unblockables

The deck heavily relies on Thada's Islandwalk ability and wants to abuse it as much as possible

  • Sealock Monster can permanently turn a land into an Island and gives us a warm body to block with
  • Stormtide Leviathan provides both a strong defence from opponents and unblockable for Thada Adel. Great value all round.
  • Vedalken Plotter provides a permanent island to swing into, a body to use for blocking and will let us steal a high value land from someone.
  • Spreading Seas let's us turn a problem land into an island to swing through and draws a card.
  • Phantasmal Terrain just let's us turn a problem land into an island (or a colourless tapper if they're already in blue), but either option is profitable for us

Artifact Synergy

With the amount of artifacts in the deck and amount of artifacts we'll be stealing, this deck has some important artifact synergy to keep it on top.

  • Chief Engineer means if we can steal a lot of artifact creatures or have a lot of bodies sitting about, we can use them to cast stolen artifacts and still have our mana open.
  • Darksteel Forge is such a strong piece of kit; if it's on the field it can be very difficult to deal with.
  • Fabricate let's us fish up the Forge or anything else we need, especially to avoid problems like Acquire
  • March of the Machines can turn a field of mana rocks into an overwhelming army. If dropped at the right time it can pull the game back
  • Memnarch turns our own things into artifacts to synergise with Darksteel Forge AND let's us steal enemies items.
  • Mirrorworks can double up any of our cast artifacts - such a strong card as most artifacts doubled is super strong
  • Muzzio, Visionary Architect let's us fish through the deck for more things, especially handy for hitting the bigger things.
  • Prototype Portal can start churning out artifacts we have; such a fun idea and situation
  • Tezzeret the Seeker can untap some of our bigger artifact threats or can fish up cheap things like Darksteel Citadel
  • Trading Post has such a great synergy with an artifact deck; recursion or card draw or chump blockers.

Theivery

Sometimes, the only way to gain something for the collection is to take it by yourself. For this reason, we have a number of copy and theft built into the deck

  • Daring Thief fits the theme of this deck so well; I love the idea of the Indiana Jones style thief grabbing the Contagion Engine and leaving behind a spell bomb. Although not always great value, it earns it place for now.
  • Phyrexian Metamorph can very early copy a powerful mana rock or can come in as a copy of a powerful artifact. On top of that, it still remains an artifact, meaning we can synergies with things like Tezzeret the Seeker or Darksteel Forge
  • Sphinx Ambassador doesn't always steal artifacts, but there's nothing more fun than forcing someone to remember what's in their deck. Get them to think you're stealing a big creature, then get the Oracle of Mul Daya
  • Stolen Identity can be encoded onto Thada Adel (even with Lightning Greaves on) and then start copying creatures OR artifacts.

Synergies

  • Psychic Surgery - if we're hitting someone with Thada Adel every turn, we are able to trigger it each time. Any other time it triggers (because of Tutors, etc.) just makes it better. Can be a VERY big passive hate target though so be careful with it.
  • Pyxis of Pandemonium although not a great card for us, we want to use it to lock away problems. If an opponent's commander is put on top of their library through one of our bounce effects and then tucked under the Pyxis, it won't be able to return to the command zone. This is a very nasty use of Pyxis, but it's to be used sparingly.
  • Reito Lantern allows us to put artifacts that may have been sent to the graveyard back into the library for us to steal again
  • Spellbinder with the amount of unblockable we have in the deck, we can trigger this frequently. Getting something like a Totally Lost can be devastating to opponents.
  • Strionic Resonator can copy Thada Adel's triggered ability, or any of the other artifacts triggers we control.

Notable Cards

Testing Out

  • Blue Mana Battery is an alright mana storage, but is very expensive and quite slow. Want to see how I feel about it
  • Chief Engineer only triggers off of creatures. It's okay, but don't know how I feel about this one.
  • Darksteel Forge is such a powerful card, but also such a problem. Our playgroup runs a large number of Aquire and that can be devastating.
  • Dissipation Field is a decent protection, but can also be abused if not careful. eeeh.
  • Explorer's Scope is slow and can wiff the whole game. But I really like it so~
  • Leyline of Anticipation & Vedalken Orrery the flash can be really handy but it's not NEEDED in the deck. See how I feel
  • Muzzio, Visionary Architect can in theory wiff in the deck, but I really like it. See how I feel.
  • Prototype Portal can sit in your hand for a while not doing anything in a bad situation; it requires 2 cards to work and if it gets destroyed quickly it can 2 for 1.
  • Sealock Monster is so expensive to trigger, but I really like the way it works. This is one that's sitting on the edge of getting cut
  • Seat of the Synod can be blown up and can kick us down in bad situations, but it also chains with things
  • Sphinx Ambassador doesn't fit the artifact theft theme, but it is such a strong flyer. Teetering on the edge
  • Wash Out is sorcery speed which makes it a little weak - might be that I want to change this for Evacuation instead.
  • Sword of Body and Mind - the pro blue isn't really a problem but want to see how it plays out.
