Hi everyone,

This one has been one of my favourites for quite some years now. It came out really great from the first go, with two major updates/reworks. (Dragons of Tarkir and M19)

I do realize that a Dragon deck is not really viable in Tier 1-2 Modern. Having said that, I obviously want it to be as competitive as possible without touching the core mechanic. Any help with that is greatly appreciated. And for those who are looking for a slightly alternative way of playing with a Dragon deck, I hope I can ignite a bit of inspiration with this.

Core mechanic:

Using the abilities of both Dragon Tempest (early game) & Scourge of Valkas (endgame) to dish out large amounts of damage to creatures and opponents alike by playing as many dragon creatures as possible. We need to be fast and want to have plenty of dragons in our deck, so cheap dragons are the way to go.

Deck Breakdown

Dragon Hatchling & Dragon Egg both work great in this regard. Dragon Hatchling can actually be quite menacing with it's ability, often drawing out your opponent's removal early on. While Dragon Egg is an excellent blocker, giving you another dragon into play when it dies. Metallic Mimic just to get more Dragon types to enter the battlefield and trigger Tempest.

I've been on the fence with Dragonlord's Servant , it does give me access to Thunderbreak Regent one turn sooner. But there are a lot of other great cards waiting on the bench to replace him. At the moment though, he's still in because of Archwing Dragon (we'll get back to him later).

After we have a Thunderbreak Regent out, your opponent will be less inclined to target the dragons, so you will mostly be allowed to keep them, especially because the Egg, the Hatchling and the Mimic are usually not considered a grave enough threat to take 3 damage to the face removing them.

Once we have 3 -4 dragons out, every dragon entering the battlefield is doing solid damage now through Dragon Tempest .

Card advantage was an issue early on, countering this, I added Outpost Siege for obvious reasons & Archwing Dragon lets us play it again and again every turn, dealing damage to creatures or the opponent and attacking with a 4/4 flyer. If we have one or two Dragonlord's Servants out, it becomes ridicously cheap.

In the matches where I get to this point, it's usually already over, but if not, Descent of the Dragons is brutal. Say we kill 3 dragons with it. This will create 3x 4/4 Dragon Tokens, dealing 9 damage to your opponent through the Tempest, while also giving all 3 tokens haste. Should be game over.

Some times we don't have access to a Dragon Tempest right away, so I added some removal to buy time: Mizzium Mortars , Roast , Lightning Bolt (also good getting that extra 3 damage through to your opponent when needed)

Card's that have been in and out: Slumbering Dragon , Stormbreath Dragon , Thundermaw Hellkite and Utvara Hellkite . Also been thinking of testing Glorybringer in this deck.

Other cards i'm contemplating are on the maybeboard.

Thanks all for reading! I'm looking forward to your thoughts! (Still looking for a great 1-drop) If you like the deck, give it a +1! :-) Vote Up +1
