Thanks to all who gave valuable input and +1'ed this deck.
8/25/11 - Wow. I am stunned at the response this deck has generated. Looks like I may indeed have to invest in some dual lands and put this deck into my rotation. Thanks. Due to overwhelming demand, I'm going to try using Gideon Jura in place of Gideon's Avenger .
I'd say add two Gideon Jura . Maybe consider Venser for more abuse. I like the concept and have a similar deck with, Venser's Righteous Judgement
What about dual lands?
Have you thought about throwing a couple of Sleep s in, it would work well with Sunblast Angel .
I think you should cut the doomblades. Maybe add some sleeps? Maybe add some Vedalken Certarch or even a Avenger like the top comment said.
if your running them for hard removal, may I suggest Assassinate? It works vs colorless and black creaturs for only one more mana.
Otherwise this deck is brtual.
even if you aren't playing in a "cutthroat environment", playing magic isn't fun if your mana base sucks (you'll have more problems not playing your spells) so i DO encourage you to invest in the dual lands, just to make your deck more consistent, even against your friends in casual games
Anywho duel lands are epic, Island is the keystone here so I suggest these lands.-8 Island, +4 Drowned Catacomb +4 Glacial Fortress
I recommend these ones because they are cheap(er) then others and the only disadvantage I can see is not being able to cast Unsummon first turn.
Had Frost Titan in first build...didn't need him. Blue is not the key here, white is, white does the majority of the tapping (with Tumble Magnet too), and while I need blue for Frost Breath it gets more use to Unsummon the Sunblast Angel so I can re-cast it.
If dual lands are too expensive, perhaps a fetch land like Evolving Wilds would be a good choice.
Nice deck. I have a tap deck too that runs really well, execpt pretty much the only win con is tap all of the opponents creatures and swing. I had Royal Assassin s in the deck but they didn't seem to help much. You have a lot of good removal too. I am a little confused though, you said that you wanted to keep this deck post-rotation, so why the Assassinate ? Is it just till it rotates out? Well anyway, this deck rocks. +1 from me.
I know, I know...I broke my own rule. I didn't even know about Assassinate until Turtleman mentioned it. Soon as I saw it, I knew I had to add them.
even mana cirlce? sexy.
+1 from me for that reason!!
Great combo. I would use Vapor Snag instead of Unsummon . it will be worth the 4 damage.
Thanks. The Unsummon s are there to pull back my Sunblast Angel s, so I really don't want the damage when I might have to pay life to the Blinding Souleater .
Call to Glory could be useful since it would benefit your myrs, lawkeepers, and royal assassins. If you could fit it in Marsh Flats would help alleviate some of the RNG on land draws.
Dispatch should definitely be here.... and maybe Deceiver Exarch ???
Vedalken Certarch could always be considered, I would put 2 in and replace 2 Unsummon
Chose Assassinate over Dispatch ...rather kill than exile.
Deceiver Exarch just gives me that one-time tap/untap, I have enough tappers already.
Vedalken Certarch again is just another tapper (with the 3 artifact condition) and the Unsummon s are invaluable for recasting the Sunblast Angel s.
Vapor Snag would be better than unsummon :P just saying !
Are you going to keep in standard? because if you are not, Fatestitcher is LOTZ better than Blinding Souleater
just my 2 cents
Rather than the Unsummon or Vapor Snag , i would put in Into the Roil . It could give you a card draw and could also be used to bounce a pesky planeswalker. Btw, where are the Frost Titan 's?
Vapor Snag would be better if I was bouncing my opponent's creatures, but usually it's for me.
Fatestitcher is something I will look into if I stray away from Standard.
Frost Titan was in the original build, but the majority of the time I was ready to cast him, I didn't need him.
Haven't really played against many creature-less/few decks, when it happens, I'll let you know.
Blinding Mage would be another good one to put in there, along with some Sleep
Completely agree with the above poster. I think Sleep would be a better addition than Frost Breath . Shroud could pose for a problem, but since Sleep & Sunblast Angel don't target that could be your catch all.
Just a quick question, What are you going to use to replace Assassinate with once Zendikar phases out? They didn't reprint it in M12. Just my 2 manas worth. :P
Hahaha, people keep recommending vapor snag and frost titan, without reading any comments above them. My question is this: how many creatures do you lose when you cast Sunblast Angel? You have the potential to lose many- does the angel usually win it for you? This is a solid deck, btw. This deck might not want to change when standard rotates- if it's not your default tournament deck, I wouldn't fix it if it ain't broke.
The most I've lost at once was 5 to my opponent's 7 but the average is 3. Dropping the Angel has to be timed right or it could be worse. Normally, by the time I do it, card:Gideon's Avenger is pretty huge and I can just start swinging with him and the Angel, though I did have to Unsummon him once to protect him.
So, I see this deck as being a bit slow at times, the lawkeepers are nice turn 1 drops, but I feel some Ponder s might speed things up a bit, maybe drop the Assassinate s since they will go out at the end of September. Dual lands are not that expensive so throw in some Drowned Catacomb s and Glacial Fortress es (you can find a playset of each for 4-5 if you know where to look). Mana Leak s will help keep some control for unfriendly spells such as BSZ and DOJ. The mana curve bugs me a bit I think you need a steadier progression of spells coming out, WAY too many 3 drops. I would also like to suggest a sideboard for you.
SIDEBOARD
3x card:Black Sun's Zenith: in case you find you are a bit overwhelmed by creatures with protection from certain colors.
2x Frost Titan : for more drawn out games
3x Timely Reinforcements : RDW
4x Revoke Existence : Tempered Steel decks or if O-ring begins to annoy you
3x Memoricide : CAW Blade mostly, Splinter Twin, inter alia.
I like the deck, tap control is fun, I think you could still stan throw in some extra control and some draw cards to speed things up. These are some of my suggestions, take them or leave them. +1
Wow, apparently I +1'd this already. Don't remember doing that.
Nice concept, I keep it in mind :D.But what if I discard your library for 3 creatures with a life's finale and then exile all of them with surgical extraction ? :p
I think your deck is great and really funny, a concept as I love them, but serious lack of protections/counters. You'll win against creatures decks, but what will you do against red blasters or black that force you to sacrifice, or blue that counters/redirect all of your spells ?
It's not a criticism, it's only a real wonder because I'm kinda noob you see, so I ask to understand :)
I think you'll find there are "what ifs" and answers to every deck. That said, you need to understand that while I'm not a noob, the people in my area, while experienced, are still largely "noob-y". 95% of the decks I run into are creature decks or "high-concept" decks that require a 4-5 card combo to be succcessful. I'm not saying people in my area don't know the game, they just play it differently. Much more casually. I made this deck, for the most part, as a goof. Turns out it works, and people seem to like it.
I just realized I rambled on without answering any of your questions, so I'll leave you with this. Magic is something of a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Whatever deck you have, someone else will have it's counter.
Have you thought about using Phantasmal Image or Phyrexian Metamorph to copy your Sunblast Angel instead of using an unsummon? This would give you another attacker and the copies will also benefit you if you are running low on tappers/assassins
As for why Assassinate over Doom Blade ...pretty simple, one kills non-black creatures, one kills any tapped creature.
Venser, the Sojourner is a good way to bounce permanents for their "when enters battlefield" abilities.. when you get emblem its terrifying to the opponents..
Needs Gideon Jura , so you can Assassinate and cast Sunblast Angel when gideons +2 resolves.
tap dat +1
ooo yes Gideon Jura would be perfect for this.
I love the idea for this deck I like a lot of other people have something similar. It's funny how many people keep suggesting cards that have already rotated out of standard! If he were choosing older cards the whole deck would look different with things like Icy Manipulator and Opposition the list could go on until it was a whole new deck. the point is he made something fun that he can play with anybody and both players will enjoy it
I don't know if you're willing to include Zendikar block cards or not, but I had a deck like this (I transformed it in the end) but Repel the Darkness was a personal favorite of mine. Just a thought :)
Awesome deck man +1 for sure, it's too bad Assassinate is rotating out though =(
Due Respect +1 for this Deck bro
I like the concept but the deck is "cute", it's a neat little gimmick that will see wins at FNM's but not necesarily in tournament play. A lot of the top decks barely use any creatures so having those spells will seem like a dead draw 65-70% of the time. I would reduce the amount of tap kill and install some alternative win conditions. Every good deck will have at the very least 4 win conditions your deck barely pushes one since your so focused on single creature control. Frost Titan is a must in this deck and sun titan can bring back your tappers as well as provide a reasonable amount of damage. Oblivion ring will be needed as you cant tap a planeswalker (Except Gideon)
i dont know dude i dont like now as the old one for me 4xcard:Gideon's Avenger and remove the plainswalker and Sunblast Angel
Lol. No dude. The Sunblast Angel is pretty key. Tap opponent's creatures on his turn, cast the Angel on mine, his creatures die.
This is a really cool deck idea. I know it's not going to be standard for too much longer but you should consider putting in Sleep . I think someone suggested this before, actually...
Anyways this deck seems like it would struggle against burn decks, and other non-creature intensive decks, (maybe it doesn't just a guess), so I would suggest side-boarding Leyline of Sanctity . Other than that I can't really think of anything.
Nice work +1
Also, I'm going to miss m11 :(
Very good deck, built this myself last week. One thing I did notice that could help anybody out running this deck is that 4 Blinding Souleater s seems a little excessive. I personally found subbing out 2 of them for 2 Frost Titan s was better overall because it sticks the the tapping mechanic and helps dish out the damage. Also against Hexproof decks or creatures like Dungrove Elder or Illusions there's almost nothing you can do except hope for a sunblast angel when they swing at you. So it helps to SB in some Day of Judgment s or card:Geth's Verdict. Also for Goblins or aggro decks in general Timely Reinforcements really saves your ass. Just an idea for people out there wondering what to SB in. :)
Tested and re-tested. Frost Titan is back in. Pretty sure this is the final build.
add Isolated Chapel
I agree, a card:Gideon's Avenger is pretty much paramount to this, without it, all you have is tap and death, no real power
As explained before, I use Unsummon more to allow me to re-cast the Sunblast Angel than to remove opposing creatures.
Nice deck man! As someone said before, you could use some Day of Judgment for sideboard, as well as Timely Reinforcements . Royal Assassin could be replaced with card:Gideon's Avenger (but I guess that would require a change to a more white based deck).Perhaps, you could use some Frost Titan instead of a few 3 drop "tappers".Also, the Phantasmal Image seems pretty cool in many decks. Maybe, you could try it.
+1 for the great deck!
+1 fantastic deck. so you've added Assassinate and a Frost Titan then?
I like this deck its very humourous. It reminds me of a cancel deck i made.
But its one of those decks where you just annoy the crap out of your opponent until you can get a creature out that can actually deal damage so you can win.
IMO you should include some more win conditions than just Sunblast Angel and Gideon Jura .
Otherwise you'll just make a really long game that you'll most likely lose.
I agree with pyrotrojan that you need more win conditions. Have you considered adding Inkmoth Nexus and card:Tezzeret's Gambit? That will give you proliferation for your Tumble Magnet 's, poison counter's, Gideon Jura . Not to mention the card draw. I'd honestly consider dropping blue because i can see how adding 4x Inkmoth Nexus could destroy your already fragile mana base.
just my 2 cents
Y u no put in Thornbite Staff to go with Royal Assassin ?
Cloudshift is a new card coming in Avacyn Restored and works a lot better than Unsummon for getting double-use out of your Sunblast Angel.
Unsummon is more versatile, or versatile in different ways, I suppose.

idmantelli says...
That is a very, very mean deck. Maybe add a card:Gideon's Avenger so you can boost him up really fast with all this tapping?
