Talrand Ruling, Gutter Sniping

Modern Burn Goblins U/R (Izzet)

bunsniper

Description

This deck is aimed to be a guttersnipe + Talrand Combo. I do not have much experience with creating decks, but i personally think this a solid budget deck. Planning to add cards like Sulfur Falls and Steam Vents soon, along with Cyclonic Rift and Mizzium Mortar.

Desolate Lighthouse : A core for most Izzet Deck. Added for draw power and as land.

Think Twice: Good for the drawing speed and has flashback.

Searing Spear : Added for some burning power.

Pillar of Flame: Really useful burn spell and exiles.

Faithless Looting: Drawing power to acquire the cards i want. Good combo with Guttersnipe and has flashback.

Mizzium Mortars: Added to create a board clearer and deal damage on creature threats

Cyclonic Rift: Added for another board clearer and also clears creature threats.

Epic Experiment: Used to get out loads of sorceries and instants so Guttersnipe can snipe quickly and Talrand, Sky Summoner can generate lots of drakes.

Goblin Electromancer: Lower the mana costs for some instants and sorceries. Will be more useful for overload cost when i add Mizzium Mortar and Cyclonic Rift

Guttersnipe: Core card for my deck. Burns enemy for 2 damage every time i cast a sorcery or instant. Synergizes with Talrand, Sky Summoner to give out drakes at the same time.

Talrand, Sky Summoner: Core card for my deck. Synergizes with Guttersnipe to deal damage and generate drakes per instant/sorcery

Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius: Definite Izzet based finisher.

Curiosity: This card helps me acquire some drawing power especially when i combo with guttersnipe

Main Goal: Burn enemy with Guttersnipe and create Drakes to deal extra damage.

Please add feedback in the comments to help me with my deck!

Thanks! :D

Needs more burn. Searing Spear , Annihilating Fire if you run into lots of Golgari, Electrickery against little guys, Mizzium Mortars for bigger damage, etc.

Another good idea is to add Guttersnipe s and Goblin Electromancer s for better use of your spells for less mana.

No need for that many card:Talrand's Invocations with Talrand himself in their (I wouldn't run any, personally).

Check out my deck deck:playing-with-fire-17-11-12-1 for more ideas.

It's always good to incorporate the synergy they put with certain deck types in a block. Izzet is the perfect example.

Hey, why not go back to Innistrad, and throw a card:Runechanter's Pike on a Delver? You got the instants/sorcerys for it

You have a good point there. Those lands are a pain in the arse to get. Try using the Transguild Promenades. They actually are a lot of help and they don't cost too much.

I might carry them when i get them, but until then i guess Izzet Guildgates will work for me.

I am building a really similar deck and I'm planning to exchange my Delver of Secrets  Flip for Vexing Devil . I tried Goblin Electromancer , but it didn't work so good... but it may be because o my few drawing cards cards.

Take a look on some of my ideas on Izzet Burn Combo Control [Comment plz].

Right now, i am not planning to make an Izzet Aggro deck so Vexing Devil doesn't work well with my deck. I might take out Goblin Electromancer if I playtest it some more and i feel that it doesn't work well with my deck.

Maybe run Curiosity (s) instead of Thought Scour ? If you put it on a Guttersnipe ...

hmm, sounds like a good card to use, i will consider since i have two Curiosity s available atm

November 28, 2012 2:56 a.m.

My two cents would be to take the Cancel s out, add another Dissipate , Izzet Charm , and a Mizzium Mortars . Then maybe take the two Unsummon s out for either two more Pillar of Flame s or just one more and a second Mizzium Mortars .

The mortars are amazing when you're up against a deck that is creature heavy, which isn't too hard to run into now. But if you really want those counters, I'd go with 2 Negate s and 4 Dissipate s for sure.

This deck is incredible and cool. Maybe you need of 2 Elixir of Immortality on main deck, I think...

I feel that my deck is lacking cards like Mizzium Mortars and Cyclonic Rift . This is because my budget is quite low and i will put them into my deck in the future.

no budget : Snapcaster Mage <-- that dude is good

budget : his cheap cousin Archaeomancer ? still get to keep on doing your combo

bunsniper says... #17

I have archaeomancer in my side deck, I don't feel I need to reuse cards spells unless its Mizzium Mortars or Cyclonic Rift for board clearing

Why Jace, Memory Adept ? His +1 is the only ability that seems to help in this deck. I mean its not a bad card but to use him to his most effectiveness I would run the m13 uncommon land that eliminates maximum hand sizes. I forget the name of that land right now. I might pull him out completely just because he doesn't seem to fit. I'm making a similar deck, but a little heavier on the counter, called deck:niv-mizzet-master-of-the-universe, and I want to use Chandra, the Firebrand in there but I'm not sure how well it will work.

Personally I don't really like the Izzet Charm . I would much rather have 2 more Searing Spear s or another Syncopate . Also at this point, including flashback, you have 16 pure draw card spells, 19 if you keep and use the 3 charms.

I would cut the charms and -2 Faithless Looting to +2 Searing Spear s and +3 Syncopate .

bigdamnhero says... #19

Reliquary Tower was the land.

December 13, 2012 10:37 p.m.

bunsniper says... #20

@bigdamnhero

I've tried my deck with Syncopate and it hasn't worked as well as with Izzet Charm . In my group, Izzet Charm is much more useful because all three of the options work with my deck. I will probably take Faithless Looting as it isn't working out for me for Searing Spear .

Thanks

@bigdamnhero

Also regarding Jace, Memory Adept i will try to remove it and replace it with a Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius and remove another card to at least incorporate two. Thanks for the advice

If you're willing to run a slightly more expensive card, Jace, Architect of Thought is quite cheap at the moment, and he works amazingly with this deck. If you can't afford that, Chandra, the Firebrand is a great card for this type of deck; double burn spells are awesome, and she can shoot things like Falkenrath Aristocrat and other 1-toughness dudes.

Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius is an excellent card and would fit well in this deck, if you can get your hands on him.

If you're running Faithless Looting , you should REALLY consider card:Runechanter's Pike. Put it on any one of your dudes, and suddenly it's a massive threat.

Hope this helps :)

After taking my r/u izzet deck, which is similar to yours, up against several bant control matches I completely retracted my objection to Jace, Memory Adept . His mill option wins games by setting the clock to 4-5ish which is awfully fast

I have a deck that's thematically identical, although my instant/sorcery selection is quite different (deck:drakes-fortune). One thing I'd strongly advise you to do is add Epic Experiment as a win condition. It'll let you cast not one, but up to X sorceries or instants in a single turn, each of which will trigger Guttersnipe when it goes on the stack. Even better, each Goblin Electromancer you control reduces the X cost in the Experiment by 1. Also, I'd recommend running at least one or two copies of card:Talrand's Invocation; with Talrand, Sky Summoner , an Electromancer, and a 'snipe on the battlefield you'll gain three 2/2 flying drake tokens and deal 2 damage to your opponent, all for 1UU.

Crap, please forgive the double post: If you find that while playing this deck you frequently empty your entire hand, Dangerous Wager is a great alternative to Faithless Looting . (It won't work quite as well with Desolate Lighthouse , though, since you can't flash it back later.)

December 23, 2012 8:37 p.m.

bunsniper says... #27

I have tried using card:Talrand's Invocation but it doesn't work as well as i would have originally thought. I agree with you, Epic Experiment is a great card for my deck so i am going to get some soon.

Also with Dangerous Wager , Faithless Looting has worked great with mine because i either use Faithless Looting to get rid of useless cards at the start where i would have a full hand, or at the end where i want Guttersnipe to deal as much damage as possible.

Thanks

My thoughts, add a few more lands. How often can you reliably reach 6 mana to cast Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius ? At 20 lands I am guessing that you get a little mana screwed....also, Desperate Ravings could be a great draw card for this deck, especially since Goblin Electromancer makes it cheaper to cast. All in all, I love the deck. +1 from me.

December 30, 2012 6:14 p.m.

bunsniper says... #29

I still reliably bring out Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius even with 20 lands in most of my games i play. I don't encounter many super aggro decks so i can still use Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius as a finisher in the end. Some though i do get mana screwed but most of the time i do fine with 20 land.

Desperate Ravings is a good card, but i find Faithless Looting more reliable since you can draw and discard two that you want if you draw two bad cards.

Thank you for the feedback :D

Hey I have one thought that can make a burn so overpowered that is expensive. Tamiyo, the Moon Sage 's emblem + Omniscience + any burn. What it does is it allows you to play any burn infinite times means infinite damage. Nothing to rely on.

Unless this is budget, you should run Lightning Bolt over Searing Spear , as it is a strict upgrade. I'd recommend Chandra, Pyromaster , Mana Leak , Electrolyze , Serum Visions and Young Pyromancer for this deck too. Young Pyromancer comes out faster than Talrand, Sky Summoner , so it can establish a good board state before you get to Talrand. Treasure Cruise might also be nice.

Why not Lightning Bolt over Searing Spear also, Molten Birth would be really strong for the deck. Finnally, a single Keranos, God of Storms might not hurt

sidward101 says... #33

I would cut Jace, Memory Adept for something more relavant like Keranos, God of Storms Because he's more useful for your purposes since you're not an all-in mill deck, and definitely Lightning Bolt over Searing Spear because it's one less mana for the same card.
