Take me to Church

Commander / EDH

Hey, so this deck is a control aggro build I'm attempting. I tried to get a Ashling the Pilgrim deck tuned up but there wasn't enough recursion to deal with the multiple Child of Alara decks in my LGS. Archangel Avacyn  Flip was the perfect response and the deck plays much more smoothly with all the tutors, removal and protection adding white brings. So here's a general run down of how it should play:

The deck relies on the board wipes, ultimately it's just mid to late game aggro with the goal of winning via combat or Repercussion related damage. You want Sneak Attack if you can get it, it makes the deck run much more aggressive. Here's a list of priorities for tutoring :

Equipment: Sunforger, Skullclamp/Sword of Feast and Famine, etc.

Creatures: Varies from game to game.

Enchantments: Sneak Attack/Land Tax, Aggravated Assault, Goblin Bombardment/Martyr's Cause, Angelic Renewal, etc.

There is Lightmine Field if needed as well, followed by Repercussion/War's Toll it's awesome.

The are three infinite combos here:Sword of Feast and Famine and Aggravated Assault potentially go infinte combat steps.

Goblin Bombardment/Martyr's Cause allow Sun Titan and Angelic Renewal or Reveillark and Karmic Guide to sacrifice infintely.

Another wincon is blinking all your creatures and casting Jokulhaups, though this isn't a primary goal. The flicker effects are mostly to reuse ETBs and save Sneak Attack creatures from the sacrifice clause.

Let me know what you think or upvote and I'll return the favor thanks!

Update: Puresteel Paladin wasn't great here, added Loyal Retainers since the list has a good amount of value legendary creatures. Coalition Relic, Thran Dynamo and Gilded Lotus are coming out because I feel like they have little effect on a deck that lacks the draw to really profit from the extra mana. I'm adding Wheel of Fortune, Gamble and Magus of the Wheel since my recursion is awesome but I need more discard to really take advantage. Subnote, changed Magus of the Wheel to Gift of Estates the mana fixers are so valuable here.

Hello again!

I tried playtesting this deck and it felt...weird. It didn't output much offensive pressure, and it seemed to have too few proper stax cards to survive as a control deck.

(Obviously you just built it so it needs some tuning, of course.)

RW's best strength in control is land destruction. Thus, Armageddon, Cataclysm, Ruination, Razia's Purification etc could help you secure your victory once you drop a win-con.

Stax cards I would include: Static Orb, Winter Orb, Storage Matrix, Tangle Wire, Ghirapur AEther Grid, etc. And don't forget Red Elemental Blast and Pyroblast: the best anti-control counterspells!

Smoke and Meekstone are good ways to lock down creature-based board states.

Have you taken a look at some of the Gisela stax/control decks on this site? They might help you find some more cards.

Leonin Shikari seems strange here. Might be a cuttable card.

What's your meta like? It's easier to tailor a hate package once you know your opponents' decks :)

Happy deckbuilding!

Hey thanks for the constructive criticism, this list is the product of a week of theory crafting. Everything is a bit jumbled and the curve isn't great. I didn't have time to get a description in yet either, sorry about that. What I want for control here is not a hard lock but something more akin to hate bears and winning through attrition. This deck isn't going to win in the first 6 turns, let's just put that out there. I'm looking at turn 7 or 8 probably, which means I need to disrupt turns 1-6 for other players. That said, I think I'll be removing Iroas, God of Victory for Spirit of the Labyrinth and possibly Argentum Armor for Aura of Silence.

You are probably right about Leonin Shikari but it's new to me so I'm not sure how effective it is. I assumed passing around Swiftfoot Boots, Skullclamp and the swords at instant speed would be worth a slot? If it doesn't work out I may go with Ethersworn Canonist.

I think I have to pass on MLD, my LGS is full of competent players but they aren't degenerates heh. Same reason Blood Moon was passed up here, I can win playing mostly fair but I will still try to find a spot for Static Orb since it's just great with War's Toll and Urabrask the Hidden.

You know of any really good hate cards in red similar to Stranglehold but doesn't so much target the mana base?

dlamars: Hmmm. Really depends what you're trying to hate on.

Rule of Law and Ethersworn Canonist shoot down combos.

Ghostly Prison and AEther Flash shoot down tokens.

Aura of Silence and Consulate Crackdown hit artifacts.

Manabarbs hits ramp players.

Rest in Peace hits GY players.

Et cetera :)

Lol, well after play testing it was clear what I had in mind just wasn't going to work. Take a look at the revised list if you will and see what you think. It feels much more powerful in testing, yet the curve may be too high? I am on the fence about Braid of Fire, it's potential is high since avacyn is instant, feldon, Magma Phoenix, sneak attack etc could benefit from it.

Also how do you feel about Jokulhaups over other wipes for the purpose of flickering my creatures and winning? I'd prefer something I could tutor for, like False Prophet possibly or I also considered Worldslayer but it doesn't feel right here.

I love a good w/r control, but the purifier  Flipis your commander so Im surprised you're not running Light of Sanction

Also, are you referencing Hot Fuzz with that title? Because it says angle as in geometry, not angels as in holy warriors.

Crater Hellion is a nice boardwipe in creature form. Also, if your looking for a reset button in red, Apocalypse will do the trick. And the good ole Nev's Disk.

The deck looks like it would be a lot of fun to play. I have a question for everyone, though, and it may be an obvious one, but I'm ok with that. I'm guessing you can run red because of the color on Avacyn's flipside? I ask because although the border is all red, there is no mana symbol. So I'm just wondering for clarification purposes.

KeelHaul10 Hey thanks for the suggestion, I actually chose to include Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant / Rune-Tail's Essence over Mark of Asylum/Light of Sanction purely because he is tutorable by both Thalia's Lancers and Recruiter of the Guard. Otherwise I'd have to choose it as I searched with Enlightened Tutor which is tough vs. Sneak Attack.

The name of the deck is just a play on the name Archangel Avacyn  Flip, it's not super clever but it is the first tHong I thought of. A - rch - angel, A - va - cyn. Bit of a stretch but it works. Thanks again for commenting.

bushido_man96 Hey thanks for the suggestion! I totally forgot about Apocalypse, I'm going to have to experiment to see if the three red required is doable when I need it. Crater Hellion needs to go in, but I'm not sure where to cut. If Puresteel Paladin comes out he will go in for sure.

Avacyn is RW since her transformed color is Red, kinda like how Westvale Abbey  Flip is black. Thanks for the comment!

@dlamars what I meant to say is you mispelled angel in your deck title. Not a biggie, just was wondering if it was intentional :-)

Yeah it was intentional, it's nonsense but I'm aware.
