Token Generation

The beauty with tokens and Syr Konrad is that they count as a permanent and will trigger SK's ability when they die. We want to use our tokens to either draw cards with Skullclamp or sacrifice for mana while triggering SK or other card abilities. Depending our board state, we can have a lot of triggers just off of one sacrifice!
Dreadhorde Invasion - This card serves two purposes; to give us a token at the beginning of our upkeep and to give us a possible zombie for Gravecrawler re-casts.

Bitterblossom - You know it, you love it, cast as early as possible to get your tokens going! A flying token helps us chop block those pesky flyers too.

Ophiomancer - I love this card. A 1/1 deathtouch token at the beginning OF EACH UPKEEP. If you have a sac outlet and damage outlet on the board, you get to create a token on your opponents turn and then (hopefully) Kill & Mill and then have another ready for you at your upkeep. All kinds of good.

Sengir Autocrat - A little high on the CMC cost but we get a 2/2 and three 0/1 tokens. Will combo with Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar and Nim Deathmantle for either infinite colorless mana or infinite death triggers. Also can give us three tokens for some serious card draw with Skullclamp if we have the mana.

Weaponcraft Enthusiast - Similar to Sengir only we get a 0/1 and two 1/1 tokens. Will combo with Ashnod's Altar and Nim Deathmantle for either infinite colorless mana or infinite death triggers. will also give us the same possible card draw with Skullclamp

Marionette Master - This is a new add that is replacing Grave Titan. While Grave Titan can be a great token generator, I find that I just don't want to attack much with this deck. Marionette Master is an overlooked card that is an all-in-one combo card for this deck. Due to the ability of the card, we can combo this with either Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar and Nim Deathmantle for infinite damage to our opponents. It can also give us card draw with the three 1/1 tokens.

Pitiless Plunderer - This card is great for treasure token's and possibly generating double the mana with the Altars.
Liliana, Dreadhorde General - Really one of the best Planeswalkers for Syr Konrad. Starts off with 6 loyalty counters and it's a great card drawn engine for us with the static ability. Allows for 2/2 zombie token creation and can immediately force our opponents to sac 2 creatures with the -4 ability. The ultimate is just gravy if the game drags on and we can get to it.

Ugin, the Ineffable - (removed 7/6/2020 due to the high CMC and value) - This is an artifact heavy deck which can net us some free casts but it is expensive at 6 mana for only 4 loyatly counters. I like it because it has a built in "card draw"/token generator, but more importantly an ability to destroy colored permanents. Black really lacks in any enchantment removal and this gives us a way to get rid of that pesky Rest in Peace, Leyline of the Void or similar cards.

Notable Combos

Syr Konrad, the Grim + Morality Shift - This is a great two card combo. With Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth and the ability to choose the order at which our library gets put into our graveyard, we can create an infinite loop that kills all our opponents. Now, you may ask, "why the two Eldrazi?" It is a matter of preference for a backup to cards like Deathrite Shaman that can exile our lovely Eldrazi on the GY triggers (especially since this a "creature-lite" deck). That and it is nice to have some redundancy if you draw one of them.

Note: Removed Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre for play testing (9/7/20)

Syr Konrad, the Grim + Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + another Zombie - This is a straight forward combo that allows us to get the death + leave the GY trigger from SK to kill our opponents.

Syr Konrad, the Grim + Putrid Goblin/Butcher Ghoul/Puppeteer Clique/Lesser Masticore + Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle - This allows us to sac the creature twice due to Persist/Undying, generating 4 colorless and then bringing it back with the Deathmantle.

Syr Konrad, the Grim + Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle + any of the ETB token generators (see above).

Syr Konrad, the Grim + Ashnod's Altar/Phyrexian Altar + Nim Deathmantle + Priest of Gix.

Syr Konrad, the Grim + Mesmeric Orb + Basalt Monolith - This is an awesome combo that mills our deck to damage out the board. Tap Basalt for 3 colorless, then untap it for the same three, trigger mill - rinse, wash & repeat. For those of you that want to run a Yawgmoth's Will you can use just the artifact combo to populate the GY before casting Yawggy.

Mindcrank, Mesmeric Orb and Altar of the Brood are the bread an butter of milling for us. I love Mesmeric Orb because you can cause your opponents to possibly mill their combo cards or, hopefully, a hate card (Rest in Peace I'm talking about you). Now, obviously if you are playing against a reanimator deck or something that uses the GY, you will be helping them out a lot so caveat emptor! Here are a couple Mill combos that don't require SK to be on the board:

Altar of the Brood + Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + a Zombie - This combo allows us to Mill all of our opponents.

Altar of the Brood + Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle + any of the ETB token generators (see above) - Mill, Mill and Mill.

Altar of the Brood + Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle + Putrid Goblin/Butcher Ghoul/Puppeteer Clique/Lesser Masticore - milling.

A list of cards that will allow us to execute the above combos without having to spend the 5 mana to get Konrad out:

Bastion of Remembrance - Blood Artist - Zulaport Cutthroat

Mindcrank + Bloodchief Ascension with 3 Quest Counters - This is a great combo but it fairly easy to see coming from our opponents. Once a card hits our opponents GY, they will Mill and Kill themselves.

Ashnod's Altar + Nim Deathmantle + Priest of Gix + 2 mana if Gix is on the board - This combo will create infinite black mana which will allow us to cast SK.

Ashnod's Altar/Phyrexian Altar + Marionette Master + Nim Deathmantle - The sac triggers allow us to damage out the board while bringing back Marionette Master.

This deck does have a couple possible turn 1 win and if you drawn something similar with a tutor, you could possibly pull off a fast win:

Snow-Covered Swamp
Sol Ring/Lotus Petal (or Mana Crypt if you are running it)
Reanimate
Dark Ritual
Nim Deathmantle
Priest of Gix
Ashnod's Altar

Play Snow-Covered Swamp, tap for . Cast Dark Ritual for . Cast both Priest of Gix and Sol Ring in any order, tapping the SR for . This will result in and . Use the and to cast Ashnod's Altar. Use the Altar ability to sac Priest of Gix and gaining . Cast Reanimate with the , targeting the Priest. ETB trigger for Priest of Gix resulting in 3 loss of life and . We now have a total of and . Use the to cast Nim Deathmantle and then sac the Priest to Altar for , trigger Deathmantle and pay + (with left over). Repeat for and cast Syr Konrad, the Grim and win!

Notable Exclusions

Syr Konrad is a great candidate for Infect as he damages all players with his abilities and we only need 10 to kill the table. I originally started with an number of infect cards, but it lacked consistency and tends to put a target on you. I have kept Tainted Strike in the deck as it can be a "win out of nowhere" card for Syr Konrad. It can be a great "response" to a board wipe card if you have Konrad, Mindcrank and Blood Artist on the board. Konrad's first ability will trigger before he leaves the battle field (as well as Blood Artist) for each creature killed and with each damage trigger (from Blood Artist), we get a mill an opponent for hopefully more GY triggers. Depending on the amount of creatures on the battleground and if you are playing against some creature decks, you can win on someone else's board wipe for 1 black mana.

Another (fast) use for Tainted Strike is with Tortured Existence. With Syr Konrad, the Grim on the board and a creature card in the GY as well in hand, we can use 6 to cast Tainted Strike and then use Tortured Existence ability five times to kill the table.
