Gameday Results, 2-2-1 before update. —Oct. 21, 2013

This past gameday, i ended up going 2-2-1 and I found out which cards weren't as useful as they seemed. Match 1: 0-2 Azorius Control. I lost pretty decidely the first game, I had gotten a pretty hefty army or Arbor Colossus, Polukranos, World Eater (monstrous to 11/11), Nylea, God of the Hunt, and Sylvan Caryatid. He Supreme Verdicted me before i could swing for the kill. And played AEtherling and just beat on me with him. Game two went a little better with me gaining momentum quickly, but yet again Supreme Verdict and Cylconic Rift messed my game up. I sided in Pithing Needle to shut his AEtherling down, but he countered every creature i tossed out or Detention Sphereed it. he beat me down with Mutavault and AEtherling.

Match 2: Golgari Graveyard Exiler This was a long drawn out match. He had a few Mistcutter Hydras out the first game and quickly doubled their counters using Kalonian Hydra. Thankfully i had My own mistcutter, pumped to 11 , and Arbor Colossus. I ployed him into attacking with his Kalonian on its first attack, and blocked with Arbor Colossus and made him monstrous right before damage, my mistcutter killed his, and one swung through. Then he tossed out Scavenging Ooze and exiled both the graveyards for a 13/13 ooze and cast Hero's Downfall on my mistcutter. That ended that game. Game 2 went pretty much the same way, evenly matched the whole time, until we went to Time. I ended up drawing and casting Colossus of Akros on turn 0. he didn't have an answer, i made him monstrous and swung for the win on turn 2.

Match 3: Rakdos Unleash Aggro This match was kind of embarassing, game 1 he dropped Rakdos Cackler unleashed while all i had was Elvish Mystic, then Hellhole Flayer unleashed, and I had a Sylvan Caryatid... no use haha, then he dropped another Cackler and put Madcap Skills on it, and preceded to beat on me. Game 2 went exactly the same way.

Match 4: Bye

Match 5: Naya Lifegain/Aggro I suspect this guy was a noobie to competitive play, he used all guildgates and didn't know his triggers, needles to say i crapped on him both games without trying.

Cards found most useful: Mana Bloom - Provided that extra mana early on, and added an extra mana and one more devotion late game if i just kept it on the field, no one saw it as a threat, but it really fueled my early game, and allowed me to cast Flesh / Blood multiple times after they got rid of my Sylvan Caryatid

Polukranos, World Eater & Arbor Colossus - Need i really say why?

Cards that didn't do anything: Gyre Sage - Got removed faster than anything, couldn't help ramp early game if all i pulled were Elvish Mystics and Voyaging Satyrs and even if she did get bigger, she got removed.

Voyaging Satyr - Wasn't really as useful as i'd hoped, maybe if I had more Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx but im staying at two, I drew both of them in most games and the second one just sat in my hand.

This is a lot like the deck I've been using for the past few weeks, Shadow of the Colossus. It's a lot of fun, and I recommend you try splashing for Beck / Call and testing with Voyaging Satyr for comboing with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx

Lordlordington I'll definitely check it out, I've been looking for new ways to add card draw so I don't run out of fatties with mana to spare

You've currently got 35 creatures, half of them provide ramp (which I still think is too much). You want card draw? 4x Garruk, Caller of Beasts is your answer, nothing else comes close. You should be able to empty you hand and cast him around T4 and then refill your hand to drop a bomb T5-T6.

Have you considered Zhur-Taa Ancient or Xenagos, The Reveler ? They both can generate a huuuuge amount of mana

Have you considered Voyaging Satyr to untap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ? That was a combo used for the R/G ramp deck that took 3 or 4th I think at pro tour.

You have even more devotion to one color, you'd get huge amounts from that.

What's everyone think of the changes? And yes I realize Mana Bloom isn't amazing, but it boosts my deck just enough early game to build momentum

Im really not a fan of the recent changes... i loved the fact that u could draw out the game with defenders, while gaining mana through axebane... but no more... Im defenately not gonna make this version of the deck

boligbent I liked the huge ramp that Axebane Guardian gave as well as drawing out the game a bit, but I found it wasn't quite competitive enough because control would bounce him or kill him, and burn would kill him and leave me with no defense, attack or mana.

Maindeck Witchstalker? Why? Surely there are better alternatives, that dont rely on your opponent playing black or blue?

Why not? He limits my opponents on control, burn and removal, and ups my devotion count. Perfect to hold down the fort

I liked this deck better when you had Axebane Guardian and Worldspine Wurm . I think you're over-thinking things.
