Sygg's Stabbers

This deck revolves around a very high level of card draw, unblockable creatures that benefit you when they deal damage, some counterspells/interaction, and a couple of pretty janky win conditions! The curve is really low so hopefully things should play out quite quickly and with all your card draw then hopefully you will be holding a few answers to difficult situations.

How do we win? This is always the first thing I ask myself when I build a deck and there are a few ways we can go about it here:

• A combination strike of Quietus Spike or Scytheclaw on an unblockable creature with Wound Reflection or Archfiend of Despair on the board. This means you knock off half the opponent's health (rounding up) in combat, then in your end step they die!

• Get Vraska, Scheming Gorgon up to enough loyalty to use her ultimate ability, at which point all of your unblockable creatures get "When this creature deals damage to a player that player loses the game". Which is pretty nice....

• Simple combat damage with unblockable creatures. This isn't maybe the most fun/fastest way for us to win, but there are enough unblockable creatures with enough buffs to them from equipment that there is at least a chance we could win this way.

• If the game goes on for long enough then you should have drawn enough mana to play a pretty nasty Torment of Hailfire, which can often turn things in your favour enough to win soon after.

So how do are get to these janky wins? Simple - play fast, and draw loads of cards....

• Sygg, River Cuthroat allows us to draw a card at the end of ANY turn where an opponent lost 3 or more life. Not just your own turns, not just turns you attacked on, not just life you caused them to lose. This will hopefully be drawing you a card on most turns.

• There are a number extra cards that give us draw power when we attack or deal damage to the enemy, including Ruin Raider, Mask of Memory, Smuggler's Copter, Loyal Drake, and Loyal Subordinate.

• There are also a number of cards that ramp us while we slit throats and smash face: Prying Blade, Dowsing Dagger  , and Sword of the Animist.

• Finally, lots of the unblockable creatures themselves will also be helping us out: Dauthi Voidwalker, Ghostly Pilferer, Blind Zealot, Shadowmage Infiltrator, Deepfathom Skulker, and more.

And then we must stay alive. This might be the hardest part of our strategy but there are a few cards we can use to help!

• Guard Gomazoa, Fog Bank, and Maze of Ith are there to help with blocking any annoying single attacker threats.

• Propaganda, Crawlspace, Collective Restraint, and Silent Arbiter should help to keep some token themes at bay.

• Cunning Rhetoric and Ever-Watching Threshold should help to deter people from swinging at you for no reason, and if they do, we get to draw!

Update 2018-06-17

Got some new cards from Battlebond and Commander Anthology 2 and decided to have a little tweak of Sygg.

• Monastery Flock removed and Fog Bank added. Simply better.
• Dire Undercurrents removed and Read the Bones added. It's cheaper and I wasn't getting much use out of the enchantment.
• Juggernaut removed and True-Name Nemesis added. Yes you only get to name one player but it's a nice safe way of getting 3 damage in each turn for your Sygg card draw.
• Bloodforged Battle-Axe removed and Dimir Signet added. The axe is nice but ultimately I felt the deck needed more ramp.
• Trespassing Souleater removed and Virtus the Veiled added. Virtus isn't unblockable, but we could use the Deepfathom Skulker to make him so and the upside was too good to miss. The Souleater wasn't great.
• Island removed and Underground River added. A nice little upgrade.
• Mystic of the Hidden Way removed and Archfiend of Despair added. The Archfiend gives us another way to win more easily and the Mystic was a bit "meh".

Update 2018-07-14

Just trimming the fat and slightly lowering the overall CMC.

• Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse removed and River of Tears and 1 x Swamp added. Speeds things up.
• Vraska's Scorn removed and Ancestral Vision added. I never really used the Scorn and I pulled a foil Vision so....
• Memory Plunder removed and Pongify added. The Plunder is nice sometimes but it's often a dead card in hand for 4 mana. Pongify adds some much needed extra interaction.
• Spellbinder removed and Swan Song added. Again adding more interaction while replacing something that had very few useful targets (most of my instants are counterspells....).
• Trepanation Blade removed and Cancel added. And again, more counterspell at the loss of something that mills a bit.

Update 2018-08-15

- Swapped out 1 Island for a Ruin Raider, as we'll be able to enable his "bob" effect most turns. - Swapped out 1 Swamp for Loyal Drake, which will give us yet more card draw once Sygg is out. - Swapped out Jace, Cunning Castaway for Ever-Watching Threshold as I think it might be more useful and more reliable card draw plus a deterrant to attacking us at all!

I just hope this reduction in lands isn't too much, but 34 mana-producing land should be plenty given the low curve and high draw of this deck.

- Swapped out Ancestral Vision for a Crawlspace as we have a lot of draw and wanted to increase our defences. - Swapped out Sword of Body and Mind for Silent Arbiter as this isn't a great sword in this deck and we want MORE increased defences. - Swapped out Murder for Koskun Falls for YET MORE defence!

Having decided to stop using this folder I have had to make some modifications to all of my decks to fit the cards in.
