If you like to build your deck around your commander, Mairsil, the Pretender is the card for you.

The goal of the deck is to exile as many creatures with Mairsil to let him use all of their abilities. In order to do so you need to continuously make Mairsil enter the battlefield, and that's why cards like Essence Flux and Conjurer's Closet are in the deck.

To search for cards, the deck has the self-mill mechanic (see Traumatize ) because Mairsil, the Pretender doesn't care if the card you want to exile is in your hand or in your graveyard.

When a good number of cards are exiled, Mairsil begins to watch out for himself with defensive abilities like the ones of Cavern Harpy , Mistfolk and Mischievous Poltergeist , so your main concerns are removals (for the first few times Mairsil enters the battlefield) and counters for creatures.

Exiling creatures like Minion of Leshrac and Shauku, Endbringer lets you control the board and cards like Horseshoe Crab are there to let Mairsil chain abilities.

Mandatory cards for the deck are Quicksilver Elemental (who lets Mairsil play the same abilities more than once each turn), AEtherling , Morphling and Torchling .

Finally, you have 3 main win conditions: the first involves Hateflayer and needs the infinite mana combo consisting in Pili-Pala + Sol Ring (or other mana artifacts); the second win condition also requires infinite STAPs and is represented by Demonic Hordes (and, like him, Minion of Leshrac ) which lets you destroy all enemy lands; the third and last win condition is Tree of Perdition : imprinted on Mairsil, the Pretender lets you set an enemy's life total to 4 and then if you can STAP Mairsil and attack him, that's a K.O.

Be careful of exiling mana artifacts: some are useful to the infinite combo but if you exile too many then you will not have that mana available if Mairsil gets removed and you need to play him again.

Have fun with the deck, if you want to try it!
