Well. This is awkward. —March 22, 2018

In a sudden twist of ill fate, it turns out that my combos don't work!

See ruling debate here and discussion in the comments.

This is an unfortunate blow, to be sure.

BUT. I was brewing this deck before the supposed combo came out, and damn it all if I don't continue brewing after it's been debunked! Moma didn't raise no quitter!

The good news is that no major structural changes are needed. The above-average sunforger package is still here. The Neheb/Ogre/Sanctum + X-Spell combo is still here. the value is still here, and this deck will still work.

So in light of these developments, here are the initial changes:

Out:

IN:

Still looking for new ideas in the coming days and weeks.

Time for some good news though!

85+ upvotes! 100+ comments!

The art for the commander has been spoiled!

Thanks for the comment and upvotes! Keep them up! Onward!

Look out New World, here we come! Brave, intrepid, and then some!

Hidran thanks much!

DrukenReaps nice! Let me know when you get to testing so we can discuss what works and what doesn't!

Yeah absolutely ask your playgroup about Painter's Servant. If not I'd totally be willing to trade for that foil one...

Wiggyman thanks much! Definitely considering it! It's got some problems though... only hits creatures, costs a lot, can be countered by a Strip Mine... Lots of cards I want to try, not enough slots!

IAmTheWraith appreciate it! I'm been blown away by the response for, and popularity of, a Boros commander that isn't even fully spoiled yet! You guys are the best!

Note: Today I'm hoping to do some work on my maybeboard. I could build a whole other deck with all those cards! Going to place cards I really want in on the sideboard, and the maybeboard will just be cards I've considered. That will be a whole section when I write the primer. Stuff I want to do:

Thanks all! Keep the comments coming!

Ok, so like how did this just disappear from the top list into nowhere?

March 15, 2018 8:30 p.m.

Suns_Champion says... #4

IAmTheWraith yeah once you get the top spot for a while it rotates out to give other decks a chance :)

March 15, 2018 9:38 p.m.

Just a little note I realized that I saw when building my deck, Painter's Servant isn't legal in commander. Not sure what you should switch it out for but still.

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news!

This is the realization of my first ever magic deck (I don't count the jumble of angels I made way back when). I called it "Lifesword" and had cards like Cradle of Vitality to gain combat bonuses from life gain. It just wasn't viable though; it didn't have the flexibility that was necessary and I just ended up straining myself too far. But this has the flexibility and the power that I was missing back then! This is like seeing the first ever magic deck idea I ever wanted to build coming to life and actually being viable this time. Nice!!!

Have you ever considered Furnace of Rath effects? They're nasty with Repercussion effects, since the damage gets doubled twice.

scotchtapedsleeves: if you wouldve read the description and/or many of the other comments addressing that issue, you would know that his playgroup has allowed him to put it in the deck.

Cipher001 glad I could give you that throwback! Thanks for the kind words!

Daedalus19876 yeah I have. Out due to meta; too many voltron aggressive swingy decks running around.

scotchtapedsleeves Yup! I know! What IAmTheWraith said :) My playgroup has allowed it provided there are no nasty combos going with it(grindstone, Iona, etc). The utility it will bring is amazing so I definitely suggest asking your own playgroup about it.

Note #1: I've broken down and added Aetherflux Reservoir for combo consistency, and developed the side combo a little more. Still looking for good lifegain payoff cards and new combo ideas!

Note #2: 69 upvotes. Nice.

Wait, Samite Ministration is another infinite life combo? If it is, that was pretty clever!

I think 37 lands is a wee-bit much. I think you could comfortably cut it back to 37, and include 2 more cards of what you want/need. I would recommend a bit more spot removal, such as Path to Exile. Other than that I can't say much except YOU GOT 73 UPVOTES IN A WEEK YOU ABSOLUTE MADMAN

Oh and as someone who has been trying to use Settle the Wreckage for a while, it is not actually that good. I would replace it with another, better, board wipe, such as Wrath of God or Rout

manticoreknight yes it is! in't it great? Boros combo everyone!

Chiberia thanks for the comment and upvote! I know!!! This has been my fastest deck to get over 50 upvotes ever! Floored by all the help and love! It's been a wild ride for sure.

I know Boros really well, so I think 37 is the right number. Given the limited draw and ramp options, I need to consistently hit at least my first four land drops to survive into the late game. I run 35 lands in Bad Luck Brion and get screwed more often than I'd like haha!

I really want to test out Settle the Wreckage, but if it doesn't work I'll replace it with Path to Exile. Thanks again!

@everyone: I've shuffled some things around. testing out different damage spells and added Coalition Relic and Worn Powerstone to turn 4 my commander. Found room for Mark of Asylum and cut more useless cards. Let me know what y'all think!

I also immediately started brewing this kind of deck, and I love what you've done here.

March 19, 2018 2:49 a.m.

Do you think Chandra, Torch of Defiance is a good addition to the deck?

March 19, 2018 7:34 p.m.

The deck looks super sweet. I cant wait to build this commander either. But can you explain the spiritualize combo a little better please? Thanks!!

March 20, 2018 11:18 p.m.

Suns_Champion says... #19

jeffeniqua thank for the comment! Would appreciate an Upvote :)

manticoreknight she'd be good undoubtedly. I won't be be running her in mine but she'd definitely be a worthy include :)

TheMrBigShot96 Thanks! Sure!

Firsong and Sunspeaker states that "Whenever a white instant or sorcery spell causes you to gain life, Firesong and Sunspeaker deals 3 damage to target creature or player."

Spiritualize states that "Until end of turn, whenever target creature deals damage, you gain that much life." This effect lasts until end of turn, so after I cast it it creates delayed triggers every time the creature deals damage. Thing is, my commander has to deal damage to get it all going. So here's how it works:

  • 1) Cast Spiritualize targeting Firesong and Sunspeaker (draw a card)
  • 2) Deal damage with Firesong and Sunspeaker(by either A) combat damage or B) Their second triggered ability by casting a white spell that gains life)
  • 3) Once F&S has dealt damage, Spiritualize will trigger, gaining you life, and since it is a white spell that gained you life, F&S will deal 3 damage to something, triggering Spiritualize again. Creating an infinite loop of damage and lifegain.

Hope that clears it up! Thanks for asking, I'll end up sticking this comment in the primer haha!

Please don't forget to Upvote everyone! If you like the deck Upvote it! Almost to 100 which is fantastic!

TheACTR says... #22

I love this card and am glad to see people building decks for it already. This deck looks really well put together. However, I have to tell you that Spiritualize and Samite Ministration do not work for the same reason Renewed Faith doesn't work. The life gained from those effects are triggers of the cards and not the actual cards themselves and thus Firesong and Sunspeaker will not trigger.

Otherwise I love this and look forward to making my own version of this when Dominaria drops.

March 21, 2018 5:47 p.m.

Suns_Champion says... #23

The art is pretty alright! Can't wait for the foil!

TheACTR are you sure? I need a judge lol

Might be right. That'd be a crushing blow.

March 21, 2018 6:13 p.m.

DrukenReaps says... #24

TheACTR renewed faith's cycle effect doesn't work because when you cycle it is not a spell. Firesong and Sunspeaker's effects apply to spells. I don't see the connection here because the other 2 you mention will be spells when they are used and the effect originates from a spell so it is a spell that causes the effect.

If you could supply the rule or some other example I would appreciate it greatly.
