Super Best Friends

Alt text

Introduction

This is the standard deck that I am currently playing and having a good amount of success with. There aren't too many decks similar to it which may or may not be a good thing but it's great fun to play and works very well.

Firstly, yes! This is a superfriends deck! In fact, it's the very best of superfriends! The whole team has gathered up in one place for some great fun.

The main win-con is Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker. Drop him and most opponents will scoop, however, each other planeswalker has a win-con in their own right either by working with their mates or by themselves. I'll go into more detail during the planeswalker section however, for now, I'll list the cards and give a brief description as to why they're in the deck.

Card Analysis

Instants

Syncopate - The diversity of this counter is unmatched. It works eary game when they tap out and it works late game when you can afford to tap out. Exiling the spell on top of that is just a bonus vs. any deck with graveplay.

Azorius Charm - Another diverse card. The lifelink ability is obviously useless to us, however its two other abilties make up for that. Though it's not commonly used to draw a card it can definitely give you that little bit extra advantage should you need it. Also works well if you have a dissipate in hand but not the 3 mana to use it. Instead bounce the creature and counter it the next turn.

Searing Spear - Hopefully this one's self explanatory. Only time it will be used as a burn to the face is when comboing with Tamiyo, the Moon Sage but I'll go into more depth on that later.

Think Twice - Mostly obvious. Gives you card advantage but also doubles as an opponents turn miracle Terminus.

Dissipate - Hard counter then exile the spell. Too easy.

Sphinx's Revelation - I wish I could make this card a playset without losing anything else too vital. It saves you when you're low and fills your grip at the same time. Definitely the main source of card advantage in the deck.

Rewind - Fairly self explanatory again, however it also comboes with Tamiyo, the Moon Sage. More later.

Sorceries

Supreme Verdict - Uncounterable Boardwipe. Yes please.

Terminus - Boardwipe that gets around everything. Boros Charm doesn't stop it. Undying doesn't stop it. I still don't understand why some people prioritize Supreme Verdict more. Maybe because it's uncounterable but any decks running counterspells probably won't have the creatures to be concerned about a board wipe.

Enchantments

Detention Sphere - Strictly an upgrade to Oblivion Ring. I wish I had two of them in the deck as I used to but I can't figure out what to replace it with.

Planeswalkers

Liliana of the Veil - Sadly, the double black can be hard to hit for an appropiate turn to play her but she still works wonders once you do. Geist of Saint Traft's best friend.

Chandra, the Firebrand - An incredibly underestimated planeswalker by my opinion. Her -2 is fantastic with Sphinx's Revelation and her ult wipes fields.

Gideon, Champion of Justice - When this guy was spoiled a lot of people were complaining about him. I believe what they were doing wrong, however, was actually viewing him as a planewalker. Take a moment, if you will, and picture him instead has a creature! Now do you see how he's amazing? He avoids your boardwipes then swings in for 5 immediately after. His ult is basically a win-con in itself too.

Jace, Architect of Thought - Mainly used as a digger for answeres however his other abilities have their uses. Though his ult is less effective, I have been able to win a game with it merely by dropping Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker and an Angel of Serenity to deal with any threats.

Sorin, Lord of Innistrad - This guy is the master of chumps. Not only will you be gaining life if your opponents swing you but you'll also be preventing that damage that would otherwise be dealt you to. Hurr durr. Can work as a win-con though I'm yet to have it happen for me in a serious game.

Jace, Memory Adept - This guy was originally in my sideboard to come in vs. control. I figured, however, if I mainboard him not only will I have the game 1 advantage, but an alternate win-con too!

Tamiyo, the Moon Sage - Probably one of my favourite planeswalkers of all time. Her +1 repeatedly deals with massive threats looming on the opponents side whilst her ult practically wins you the game. Imagine her emblem with Searing Spear or Rewind or even Sphinx's Revelation in hand. Angered opponents are sure to ensue.

Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker - .... Need I say more?

Utility Lands

Nephalia Drownyard - Mainly for control matchups but also works as a draw engine with Tamiyp, the Moon Sage's emblem.

Sideboard Options

Elixir of Immortality - Mainly comes in against control when they sideboard to mill you out.

Pillar of Flame - Works fantastically well against zombies. Gravecrawler's favourite card. Ever.

Negate - Yet another card that's sided in against control. Many people choose dispel, but I personally love being able to hit planeswalkers and other such non creature spells too.

Rakdos's Return - Though I wish these were mainboard, they have enough diversity to be good against anything.

Rest in Peace - Say no to reanimator.

Slaughter Games - The rules text should read: "Most diverese sideboard option in the standard format". I bring it in against everything really. So long as I've learnt some good enough targets after Game 1. Only thing that changes is what I take out.

Supreme Verdict - Anything creature heavy cops another 2 of these after Game 1.

Witchbane Orb - Two uses, one is against RDW even though that seems more creature heavy than burn spells these days. Other use is against control / mill. Just a bit of deck tech.

Curse of Death's Hold - Useful in many different ways but my favourite is against anything running Lingering Soulds.

That's the basic gist of it! I've had a great deal of success with this deck and it's been changing here and there along the way but if any of you have suggestions, feel free! I'm all ears :)

I'll post up games and FNM nights as they come by.
