FNM Modern - Just 8 Players Tonight —March 24, 2018

The modern gatherings on Fridays are way smaller than on Saturdays. Only 8 players tonight but they were pretty good decks. I tried something new tonight. I cut the baubles and put in 3 spellbombs main deck. I really liked it actually and I may keep it that way going forward.

Round 1 vs 8 Wack Goblins 2-1 Win

Game one I mulled to 6 and was on the draw. I had the tools to maybe pull it off. I was at three life and cast Pulse of Murasa to die to a bolt in response. Games 2 and 3 I saw sideboard cards, collective brutality and a second Pulse of Murasa were clutch. Also I sided two damnations tonight and saw one game 3. Got back to back wins to win the round.

Round 2 vs UR Thing/Pyromancer 2-0 Win

It's a pretty easy matchup because all his threats are 2 CMC. I got the lock of capsule/ruins game 1 and beat down with witness and snaps. Game two I fought through a late game relic, but was able to flood the board with hangarback, witness, and snaps and just out valued him. A fun 2-0 round.

Round 3 vs UB Faeries 2-0 Win

Game 1 I kept a two lander but I had double witness and double snapcaster so I knew if I hit lands I'd be able to grind forever. I ended up drawing Loam which was perfect. I found a Ghost Quarters and was able to loop Loam/GQ around 4 turns to take out 2 creeping tarpits and 2 mutavaults. Eventually witness back my main deck lily of the last hope and controlled the board to ultimate it and won with the emblem and a army of zombies. Game 2 I got Thrun out but he got bitterblossom out to block it every turn. We ended up racing and I had a creeping tarpit and won the race by 1 turn. It was a pretty epic round.

Results 3-0 first place

Still pretty happy winning regardless of a low player count. It's fun playing against the many archetypes of modern. Side note, before the tourny I played two game against a good Mardu Pyromancer deck and won both. It seemed like a great matchup. Especially with the main deck spellbombs

Discard is great when you can put a clock out and finish the game quickly. I decided to go a counterspell route instead. Discard is a horrible top deck late game (which this deck wants to go late), while counterspells can stop your opponent's top decks and also keep you ahead. Discard is proactive and this is a reactive deck/gameplan. Discard is a great strategy, just not for this deck.

Thanks for the question!

I am really looking for a new deck to play. What are this decks tough matchups?

I should put a disclaimer that this deck isn't tier 1 by any means. I wouldn't want to have someone drop some money for it and not do well with it. It is pretty good though but it kinda folds to good graveyard hate. That's why I have some backup wincons that I side in that don't rely on graveyard.

I haven't got to play the deck enough to find it's true bad matchups. But I do know that I've had trouble with Tron. I now side 3 spreading seas but I haven't got matched up with Tron since I put those in the board (one of the lovely things about Modern lol).

Good matchups are creature decks and slower Midrange decks. This deck is at its best when graveyard hate isn't a priority for people to side.

I found that this deck is really tough to pilot because of all the tutoring and different lines that the decks has. Also side boarding takes a lot of practice because the deck builds "engines" (loops) to win the game. And I am still learning how to side out the different pieces and not to ruin its consistency. I know I've lost some games because of not siding correctly or keeping hands that appear to be good and also just misplays.

I have a 16-8 record so far with the deck, but this includes me tuning and finding all the kinks and fixing it on the way. I think it's pretty good record considering the uniqueness of the home brew. But I do post my results on the updates every time I play it. I hope that helps your matchups question.

But it's a extremely fun deck to run (in my opinion). Sorry for the ramblings haha hope it helped.
