- 3x Birds of Paradise
- 2x Borderland Ranger
- 4x Deadly Recluse
- 2x Elvish Visionary
- 3x Solemn Simulacrum
- 4x Stuffy Doll
So this was my first foray into Standard MTG deck building. I'd only ever done EDH/Commander and drafting before.
I was inspired when I bought an M2013 fatpack and drew 3 Stuffy Dolls. At first I was like "what the heck am I going to do with these?", but then someone mentioned building a "Prey Upon/Revenge of the Hunted" deck with Stuffy Dolls, and I started testing it out. This is what I've come up with so far. In my play-testing I've found that while Prey Upon (and/or Ulvenwald Tracker) can produce some good results, I was finding I either got swamped with too many Prey Upons with no Stuffy Dolls or Stuffy Dolls with no win conditions. That's where Blasphemous Act and Into the Maw of Hell come in.
Birthing Pod is just an extra way to ensure I get Stuffy Doll out (plus ramp mana), and I'll have to come up with a new plan once Mirrodin rotates. The game should get a lot slower with Mirrodin out, so maybe something like Reforge the Soul will work.
I'm torn between Thunderbolt and Prey Upon, but my gut tells me that with Restoration Angel being so popular, that I would rather kill them, as they can't be killed with Slagstorm, unlike Delver and Geist of Saint Traft.
Wild Defiance is to prevent Tragic Slips, and Autumn's Veil is to REALLY prevent Tragic Slips (and Vapor Snags and mana leaks). Melira is for the odd poison deck that still sees play in my meta occasionally. Elixir of Immortality is for Turbo Fog, which tends to be a REALLY good match-up for this deck game 1. Game 2/3, they bring out the Torpor Orbs and the Tormod's Crypts, which is where the Acidic Slimes, Elixir of Immortality, and Beast Withins come into play.
Overall I'm really pleased. It's a bit gimmicky, and when I lose I lose HORRIBLY, but when I win it's with like a double Stuffy Doll Blasphemous Act for 26 points.
NOTE: Rancor DESTROYS this deck. Beast Within is my only way to deal with it, and that's iffy. I need to come up with a better plan for it. Possibly Revenge of the Hunted replacing Wild Defiance to sideboard out Thunderbolts.
A few things off the top of my head when I saw this deck:
Stuffy Doll is awesome!
Dual Casting for value!
Would you consider going into white or blue? (even if you won't now, you might want to when RtR comes out, the mana is going to be SWEET)
Elvish Visionary looks like a 4-of to me
Play 4 Bonfire of the Damned = Randomly win the game sometimes
If Rancor is a problem, add more ways to kill creatures at instant speed for little mana, say, Incinerate (in case you didn't know: if you kill a creature in response to them trying to Rancor it, the Rancor never hits the battlefield, and thus won't return to their hand)
Buried Ruin doesn't seem that good
Zealous Conscripts somewhere among your 75, it ultimates your opponents planeswalkers (in magical christmasland)

Buried Ruins has actually come in handy more times than you would think. It's expensive and you sacrifice a land, but since the win condition IS Stuffy Doll, if they Tragic Slip , then I can at least still get it back.
Ultimately I think I might have more success with going with a typical red/green setup with Stuffy Doll and Blasphemous Act just added in. That way I can include Ulvenwald Tracker and/or Prey Upon and have it do more than just attack Stuffy Doll . I'm not in any hurry to buy a playset of Huntmasters because of their price, and since RtR is coming and I'm going to HAVE to change the deck up when Birthing Pod rotates, I think I'll wait until the rotation to experiment with it (I'm going on vacation for August, so there's no real point in investing into it at the moment).
Thanks for your thoughts!
