Thanks to Medusa, the gorgon is one of the most recognised Hellenic mythological creatures and in the world of Magic: The Gathering, one can find a fair few too. My Stone-Cold Gorgonization deck is the first in the series of decks I am building based on Greek mythological creatures. Medusa/Gorgons were the easiest tribe I could think of to do.

Damia not only embodies the stone-cold killing presence of Medusa but arguably is also an example of a an old debate surrounding Perseus, Medusa, Stheno, Eurayle and other mythological women: that the representation is dictated by purpose. Hence, she's perfect for what I wish this deck to embody. Archetype of Finality also embodies this deadly beauty. Pharika and her Mender are included: a Gorgon deity and her acolyte. Powerful, frightening, yet with an arguably fair countenance. Reaper of the Wilds is affected by death and mana; she is a creature controlled by her envrionment. Vraska, the Unseen represents the ruthless nature of gorgons, and is a powerhouse in her own right as Medusa was. Xathrid Gorgon simply turns her enemies into stone - a classic gorgon power. Gaze of Granite is perfect synergy. Any victim was Consigned to Dust. Hythonia the Cruel is the ultimate example of the monstrous gorgon: utterly devoid of humanity, thus kills any creature that is not a gorgon. Keepsake Gorgon only targets one; she has both monstrosity and humanity. Most who face Gorgons are driven to despair, hence the include of that card. The myth of Medusa and her sisters have Faded into Antiquity and are no longer believed in. Gorgons, though, always taught a Painful Lesson: do not upset the gods, and one's fate cannot be avoided.

Gorgons in the world of Magic love their shiny trinklets, and that is no different in mythology. Hence, all of my mana rocks are associated with gemstones and jewellery. For example, I have included Gemstone Array, Charcoal Diamond, Moss Diamond, Horn of Ramos and Emerald Medallion to ensure mana ramp. Ring of Kalonia and Sol Ring refer to articles of jewellery or power. Treasured Find, is synergy through and through. Opulent Palace is a land that shows exactly the nature of MTG gorgons.

Aspects of Gorgon and Hydra are included as mythological references as well as giving extra power. Psychic Venom is included due to the serpentine and venomous synergy that I wish to add further into the deck. Snake Umbra is serpentine synergy but also can give my gorgons extra protection. They may be fiction to us, but Medusa and her sisters have always awoken a kind of Fascination in us.

I would be grateful for any advice that can be given. Upvote and comment, if you so wish! I hope you have enjoyed this deck.

Raven Rose.
