Alesha, Who Smiles at Death Is my favorite legendary creature of all time. When the full set spoiler for DTK (Dragons of Tarkir) was released and I saw this girl, I knew I needed to make her my main commander deck. Some of my choices for the deck are pretty basic and standard, and some a little unconventional. I'll briefly explain my deck building choices, but first: a little bit about why this deck suits me and why Alesha is a perfect general for my prefered play style.

The reason I fell in love with Alesha at first sight was the fact that she was the first legendary creature (other than card:Sherei, Shizo's Caretaker?) Which hearkened to my favorite magic card ever, Sun Titan. I love white's grindy graveyard value engines like titan, Emeria, The Sky Ruin, Crucible of Worlds, etc.. Until DTK was released, there had never been a commander that really suited this grindy value-type playstyle.

Enter Alesha, Who Smiles at Death. She is a cheap casting cost Mardu general, suits players looking for grindy value decks that can control out aggro and combo out control, or players who love reanimation strategies and want to reanimate big things. All I can say is, any commander that can recur my Wall of Omens every turn is A okay in my book.

Now, on to a few of the deck choices and my take on the commander:

This deck has a few sweet win conditions which you can choose from depending on the skill level/play style of the playgroup you happen to be playing with. I think this is important, especially for players who plan on playing with a lot of different people.

The most basic win condition? Attack! since Alesha can recur any of your token producing creatures, generating a few bodies even after a board wipe is trivial. Beat opponents down with tokens and small bodies. This is part of the reason why I included Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite in the deck (also because I just love her). Use Elesh as a token buffer and if you combine her with her fellow praetor, Urabrask the Hidden after a big Living Death turn, Your hasty huge creature are sure to take out one if not all of your opponents.

The second win condition is Cataclysm. Not much to be said here, if the game is going long, reanimating your It That Betrays and casting a Cataclysm is sure to close out the game if your combos are exiled or you need to win around a Torpor Orb. Cataclysmic Gearhulk Is a similar effect, and also a reanimate-able board wipe that is an artifact for Daretti, Scrap Savant, and also works amazingly with It That Betrays. If you need to win earlier against a more competitive group, Cataclysm plus Faith's Reward is sure to cripple your opponents while leaving your board untouched, and almost always results in a few instant concedes.

Now for the obvious: combo.

If you want to run anafenza, either of these infinite etb combos can work with Anafenza, Kin-Tree Spirit and a sac outlet (other than card:goblin bambardment because then you've already won), but you have to stack the bolster trigger and then initiate another loop, then have all the infinite triggers resolve at the same time. Otherwise this interaction will not work because the entering creature will always have the lowest power once you buff up your other creatures. It's A weird interaction, I know.

I don't yet play the Nim Deathmantle + Ashnod's Altar combo. I may add tit in in the future, but for now we're sticking to the current combo plan.

(Note: when playing the deck, be sure to make unsuspicious value plays in the early game. Luckily Alesha doesn't make herself too big of a target off the bat so try to stay behind the other threats at the table for as long as possible before the big turn(s))

This deck is great for people like me who love grindy advantages and slow, churning value engines to safely get you to your win. I hope everyone enjoys my take on Alesha, who smiles at death. Happy commandering!
