Farewell to the Temur sideboard —Dec. 28, 2016

I've played a bunch of casual games lately using different Gruul sideboards, and the results are pretty amazing: My overall win percentage with the deck is up almost 10%!

My meta is very diverse, so there are a ton of single matches. But here are the before-and-after results for match-ups I've played more than once (bold indicates match-ups that are now worse): :

  • Deck: Win % and Matches with Temur sideboard → Win % and Matches with Gruul sideboard

  • UR Miscellany (Aggro, Dynavolt, Panharmonicon, etc): Not enough data → 100% (5)
  • UB Miscellany (Dynavolt, Panharmonicon, etc): Not enough data → 100% (3)
  • Mardu Control: 60% (5) → 100% (2)
  • Naya Superfriends: 0% (2) → 100% (2)
  • Red Deck Wins: Not enough data → 100% (2)
  • RG Wolves: 100% (4) → Not enough data
  • UB Control: 33% (3) → 75% (4)
  • Grixis Emerge: 100% (4) → 67% (3)
  • Mardu Vehicles: Not enough data → 67% (3)
  • RGx Marvel: 50% (2) → 67% (3)
  • UB Aggro: Not enough data → 67% (3)
  • 5C Panharmonicon: Not enough data → 50% (4)
  • Jeskai Control: 40% (5) → 50% (4)
  • UW Flash: 29% (7) → 50% (4)
  • RG Ramp: Not enough data → 50% (2)
  • BW Aggro: 50% (2) → 40% (5)
  • RG Pummeler: 0% (3) → 33% (6)
  • BR Aggro: Not enough data → 25% (4)
  • RW Aggro: Not enough data → 20% (5)
  • BG Delirium: 67% (3) → 0% (2)
  • UG Energy: Not enough data → 0% (2)

TL;DR: Except for metas with lots of BG Delirium, I recommend not running counterspells in the sideboard. They've been fun and memorable, but they don't seem to win matches.

As always, thanks to everyone who's made comments and suggestions so far! They're all archived here or under the View Archive button.

If the mirror is so bad why no Commencement of Festivities? Also I'd consider a white splash for access to Blessed Alliance, Fragmentize, and Immolating Glare? Those are usually very effective against the types of decks you're currently weak to.

Zaueski,
Thanks much for the thoughts, but I'm not sure any would be right for this deck.

I've considered Commencement of Festivities for sure ... it's superb in the mirror and could give the deck an extra turn vs. Emrakul, the Promised End or Ormendahl, Profane Prince  Flip. But it's more situational than I prefer, and really too narrow (since Pummeler represents a very small portion of my meta). Plus I should be able to get a 50% rate against Pummeler with nothing more than better play!

I like the versatility of Blessed Alliance, and Immolating Glare is fine, but I personally prefer the more consistent removal options available in Red. And while Fragmentize can certainly hit more targets than Natural State, it comes up short against Gearhulks and Metallurgic Summonings.

Thanks again though!

You can splash very easily with a Plains in the sideboard, servant and aether hub in the main if needed. A lot of decks have been doing that for blue

Guardians
Yeah, I've been running a Temur sideboard since the very first days of this deck.

Oh, whoops. I thought your maybeboard was your sideboard. Yeah, 2 extra colors might be a bit much :)

My question is how consistently you get the lands you need?

I've run a 19 land deck before, but with twice as many dorks. So how often do you get mana screwed (if at all)?

Guardians,
No worries! I'll tweak the description and try to make it a little more clear. Thanks!

Skwarka,
I've found it to be surprisingly consistent. I think running 4x Attune with Aether is key ... it seriously makes the deck feel like it has 23 Lands instead of just 19.

A typical Pummeler deck runs 20 Lands, and I ran it that way for quite a while. But I found myself mana-flooded just a little more often than I prefer, so I dropped one.

All that said, if I go with a new sideboard (shown as the maybeboard, as I type this), I'll probably drop a Longtusk Cub and add a Mountain to the 75, to support all the three -and four-drops.

Best of luck (and skill!) to you, if you end up trying it out!
