1-2, 1-2, 2-2, and 2-2 (11/30-12/4) —Dec. 4, 2016

I was traveling for work during the week and found time to play twice! And then I was able to play both Sat and Sun this weekend!

Overall, I went 6-8 (though one of those was a bye), but I got to play a bunch of new decks and learned a ton, so I feel really good about it. Here's how it all went down ...

1-2 at Wed Standard (11/30). Incidentally, 3rd Coast Cards was a great store ... I will definitely return if I'm ever back in Houston.

  • 1-2 vs. UW Control. The Temur sideboard was very ineffective in this match-up ... I should have stayed fully Aggro.
  • 2-1 vs. UR Thermo-Fever. An easy match-up.
  • 0-2 vs. UW Flash. I think this was the first time I ever played this deck IRL Ouch.

1-2 at Thurs Standard (12/1)

  • 0-2 vs Jeskai Control. This is normally a pretty good match-up, but I kept a hand I probably should had mulliganed :-(
  • 2-1 vs. Jeskai Control.
  • 0-2 vs UW Flash. Ouch again ... though the games were much closer than Wed!

2-2 (though really 1-2) at Standard Showdown (12/3)

  • 1-2 vs. Jeskai Control.
  • Bye
  • 2-0 vs. UW Flash. I think I finally figured out how to sideboard for this match-up: In 3x Weaver of Lightning, 2x Nature's Way / Out 3x Electrostatic Pummeler, 2x Arlinn Kord  Flip
  • 1-2 vs. BG Delirium. This is usually a very even match up ... if I draw well, I'll get enough damage in to Trample over Ishkanah and her brood, and win before Emrakul arrives. And if my opponent draws better, I die in some hilarious manner.

2-2 at Sunday Standard. It was a relatively small field this afternoon, so this was good enough for my first-ever Top 8. Woot!

  • 0-2 vs. Naya Superfriends. This was the first time I've ever played this deck, and I made some BAD strategic mistakes. First, I kept an iffy hand on Game 1, and I really should have trusted my instincts and mulliganed. Second, I really should have sideboarded in some Enchantment hate for Game 2 ... the manabase of the deck is really stretched, and removing an Oath of Nissa would probably have made all the difference. Finally, I had an opportunity to kill Nissa, Vital Force at one point and chose to swing at my opponent instead. Turns out that was a big mistake ... her 5/5 Elementals were just too much for me to handle.
  • 2-0 vs. BW Lifegain. This deck has destroyed me in the past, so it was nice to turn the tables :-)
  • 2-0 vs. RG Wolves.
  • 0-2 vs. Mardu Vehicles. This was a better match-up than it looks. I had to mul' to 5 on Game 1 and still almost won, and Game 2 was a close fight all the way. I've been going back and forth all season on whether I should run Incendiary Flow in sideboard, and after this match I'm definitely going to do so ... I might not have drawn it of course, but exiling a Scrapheap Scrounger would have made a huge difference early game, and a three-to-the-face would have made all the difference late game.

Updates to follow ...

I saw a bunch of folks using Harnessed Lightning wrong over the weekend, so I wanted to call out the Gatherer text just in case you weren't aware:

  • You choose the target creature as you cast Harnessed Lightning. You don't choose how much Energy to pay until ~ is resolving. No player may take actions between the time you choose how much Energy to pay and the time the creature takes damage equal to the Energy paid this way.
  • If the target creature becomes an illegal target, ~ is countered and none of its effects happen. You wont get Energy counters or be able to pay any Energy.

Sorry for the spam if you already knew this!

In case you missed it, I also wanted to mention: FIREphaenix asked about sideboarding for Pummeler over on this thread, in preparation for Standard Showdown.

Please drop by and share your thoughts too. Thanks!

I'd go flames with servant and aether hub you can make it hit for the full 3 damage it cost you an energy but hey if your trying to clear the board plus if you want to trigger the second of return you'd need a big colorless creature to hit that 5 on the board which may throw your aggro to mid range

Wolfshadowwind,
This deck doesn't ever want the "5 damage to each creature" effect from Kozilek's Return; I was looking at it for the Instant speed. I agree with you though, that the ability to tailor the damage from Radiant Flames anywhere from 1 to 3 seems more useful. Thanks!

Well with your consideation of galvanic bombardment going in you could use that for spot removal at instant speed and board whipe at sorcery or flip have board whipe at instant and use incendiary flow for spot removal at sorcery

Just got done with FNM and got kicked in the rectum.

Any advice against G/B Delirium? Seems to be a major contender at my LGS.
