"As I might of implied, this is a control deck. Like most control it gains close to "infinite" (not really) card advantage and shuts down things that would be a detriment to the player and create an advantage in more ways then one.

The initial idea and theme around this deck was to give Niv-Mizzet a figurative "book" of ideas that he could use at his disposal and amusement. A literal greatest hits of blue and red magic. By and large its to give the player a multitude of ways of dealing with threats in a multiplayer environment."


Task/Mission: Rise of the Dracogenius

When it comes to Izzet-EDH it seems that noone talks about Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius anymore. It seems that people and their commanders forgot about him beside all the other commanders around. This deck came up to remind other commanders, why they should never forget about him again.

The Dracogenius is able to stand against most commanders and win against them... but that should not be enough. come back to the halls of the Izzet League. Remind the Izzet that he still is alive. Remind all followers of the Firemind, who are blinded by that Curiosity-combos, that there is another incarnation that should be feared. This will be "the rise of the DRACOGENIUS".

1) Control

  • Brutal Expulsion: 2 for 1 spell that can rid of any bad threads or save one of your spells or creatures. Most use as a combat trick

  • Burn from Within & Comet Storm: What would red be without its x-spells? These spells help against big creatures and can be a win-option in late game while aiming the opponents lifepoints. Comet Storm can act as a massremoval too if needed

  • Capsize:Amazing spell that can dominate the boardstate

  • Counterflux: The best counterspell available in r/u. Beeing able to counter ALL spells during one turn is just perfect.

  • Counterspell: Any questions? I guess not.

  • Crackleburr: Very underrated and most times the opponents wont realize its potential till it kills the table. We have enough r/u-creatures to get best use of its abilities. As soon as there are 2 more r/u-creatures with Crackleburr, you can go crazy with that little electric fox.

  • Curse of the Swine: quit bad when this spell exiles one creature for cmc3 at sorcery Speed, but sometimes you have to answer a bad thread that way. most and best use of this spell is the x-factor when using it as a mass-exiling spell.

  • Cyclonic Rift: very versatile spell that can be neckbreaking when cast for it's overload cost

  • Disdainful Stroke: Really? Well, there might be better spells and for sure it will be replaced for something better in future (hello Mana Drain lol) but it does a great job. There are so many things to target in EDH, at least your opponents commanders

  • Dispel & Negate: Counterwar? We are ready. Beside that, we try to safe our creatures by answering instant-removals

  • Dispersal Shield: There are always permanents on our side and most times those with a high cmc as we play a beatdown deck. I was never disappointed by this counterspell.

  • Fork & Reverberate: These spells are great. First, they can act as a counterspell in answer to a counterspell. Second, in a multiplayer game there will be decent instants and/or sorceries coming down to the table. The possibility to copy these spells and get a use of them is great. Third, once your opponents know you are playing these cards, they will think twice if they try to get special instants or sorceries down

  • Hellkite Tyrant: A great body that hurts artifacts. A perfect synergy between Control and Beatdown.

  • Hydroblast & Pyroblast: Great cards and most times a 1cmc Vindicate/Counterspell. In a multiplayer game you will always be able to target or counter something.

  • Incinerate & Lightning Bolt: Probably the best burn spells in red, so autoinclude

  • Mizzium Mortars: Can act as a burnspell like Bolt or as a Massremoval. Very versatile!

  • Pongify & Rapid Hybridization: These removals get rid of everything (without any protection of course) and are just great. We are not interested in the drawback of getting our opponent a 3/3 body as our dragons laugh about these little apes and lizards

  • Redirect & Swerve: Your opponents will be really afraid of you after getting one of their spells back to their face. Great in doing combat tricks too.

  • Turn to Frog & Polymorphist's Jest: Talking about combat tricks - these cards are fun as hell and can get rid of indestructible or anything else. Bye bye titans and gods. even more our commander can catch every big fat creature by pinging 1 damage

  • Arcanis the Omnipotent: A creature that can get you 3 cards for being tapped? And can bounce itself and get away from our own massremovals? Great!

  • Djinn Illuminatus: Copy your spells. That is advantage. You laugh about my single Bolt in EDH? Say hello to my army of Bolts. Things can get really funny with Fork or Swerve effects

  • Dragonmaster Outcast & Talrand, Sky Summoner: Getting tokens is advantage! These two guys do a great job and it is surprisingly easy to protect them in EDH while playing r/u

  • Library of Lat-Nam: 3 Cards or a Demonic Tutor in blue? Of course, yes!

  • Jori En, Ruin Diver: We play many low cmc spells, so this guy helps us a lot

  • Kraum, Ludevic's Opus: 5cmc flying haste a good beatdown creature. Drawing cards for each second opponents spell perfect!

  • Melek, Izzet Paragon: Great card that can copy your spells. Works very well with our commander, who manipulates the topdeck with carddraw

  • Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind: Beatdown goes on. Here is the Combo-Dragon. Draws cards, deals damage and can go infinite with Curiosity (what we dont want to do).

  • Nivix Guildmage: Handcycle and Copy-ability thats ok for 2cmc. In lategame this little guy can be a beast.

  • Sphinx of Magosi: Evasion with carddraw.. yummy. 6/6 flying body for 6cmc, the beatdown goes on

4) Massremoval

  • Chain Reaction: Most times a Wrath of God in multiplayer EDH

  • Comet Storm: Can get rid of more than 1 creature and with enough mana it can be a massremoval to. Can act as a win-con while aiming for opponents lifepoints

  • Curse of the Swine: quit bad when this spell exiles one creature for cmc3 at sorcery Speed, but sometimes you have to answer a bad thread that way. most and best use of this spell is the x-factor when using it as a mass-exiling spell.

  • Earthquake: This massremoval doesnt target flying and thats perfect as most of our creatures are flying. Most times we dont need to get rid of flyers as our dragons and sphinxes control the sky

  • Mizzium Mortars: a massremoval that doesnt target our creatures. Hell, yes

  • Cyclonic Rift: very versatile spell that can be neckbreaking when cast for it's overload cost

  • Scourge of Kher Ridges & Steel Hellkite: These dragons must come from where the devil lives. Massremoval on a body?! Beatdown in perfection.

5) Utility

  • Elixir of Immortality: we play multiplayer. We draw many many cards, we play many many spells. We need a way to get our graveyard back in our library. The lifegain is a nice to have

  • Gorgon's Head: Deathtouch is nice as many of our creatures can deal noncombat-damage. Mainly our com-mander will transform in a pure deathmachine with this equipment

  • Hypersonic Dragon: playing sorceries like instants? Anyone who doesnt get the point?

  • Izzet Chronarch: Getting spells back from graveyard is great. This guy is reusable with Capsize or Crackle-burr

  • Loxodon Warhammer: The Warhammer does a good job equipped to our commander and a godlike job when equipped to Scourge of Kher Ridges. Will be replaced with another deathtouch-equip as soon as I get my hands on.

  • Sphinx of the Final Word: Beatdown goes on with a 5/5 flying hexproof, but the big point is getting all our instants and sorceries uncounterable

  • Swiftfoot Boots: hexproof to our most important creature that should be clear

6) Ramp

  • Sol Ring: THE ramp card in EDH

  • Commander's Sphere & Izzet Cluestone: mana in your colours AND the ability to draw you a card

  • Hedron Archive & Mind Stone: next mana rocks that can get us carddraw.

  • Everflowing Chalice: good mana rock that even has a use in late game

  • Izzet Signet: Signets are good mana rocks and worth a Slot in this list, especially as we are not playing green and have no access to most mana ramps

  • Mana Flare: a grouphug-manarock that gives us the biggest benefit as we are the ones who blast damage with our commander for mana and throw x-spells to their faces

hey thank ya very much. The deck is really fun to play as there are many ways to interact with the playgroup. beside that: big creatures, high carddraw and boardcontrol... what does a EDH-Player want more? :)

i have 3 suggestions for you! play Keranos, God of Storms over Izzet Chronarch. Play Cyclonic Rift over Disperse. Play Polymorphist's Jest over Turn to Frog. I know some more cash goes in, but its worth it in my opinion. And ofc you could also add more utility lands but i am sure you know it :-)

thanks for the suggestions! let me explain to them:

  • Keranos, God of Storms: a very good Card thats fits very well in here as it provides Card-Advantage, pressure and (as soon as Devotion is loaded) acts as a beatdown creature. i will try to get my hands on it

  • Polymorphist's Jest: well... i love Turn to Frog so this Card is just perfect hehe. will definitily get one as it works great with so much damage Dealers in this list

  • Cyclonic Rift: i have 5 EDH decks currently, 2 of them are running this Card. it fits great in a Combo heavy deck to get rid of a big boardpresence and it fits great in a battlecruiser deck to generate a big finish. Cyclonic Rift IS a top Card, but i dont see it in here. let me explain why: my opponents nearly never have a big boardpresence as this deck keeps it under control. instead of bouncing everything i destroy everything. the Card-Advantage this deck generates makes sure that i Keep ahead and will always have more answers available than they can get new threads.

this list has only Problems with limiting effects like Winter Orb or Rising Waters. when those Cards resolve you can get out and drink a beer till the next match starts :P

last weekend i was able to get some matchups. in 2 matches i catched my Nevinyrral's Disk as a dead draw.. well at least i was able to discard it to Mercurial Chemister in 1 game...

so, i guess i will give Cyclonic Rift a try in here. i was able to get my hands on a Merchant Scroll, so CR would fit as a potential target.

hey, i didn't know Sword of Kaldra exists. it is definitivly a Card that is worth considering to take in but i still would choose the deathtouch-equips first as they are cheaper in their cmc and equip-cost and they do the same for your deck. you only want to get rid of creatures and in 95% it doesn't matter if they go to graveyard or Exile.

Good to see more Dracogenius builds around here. A fun selection of cards for sure! I do miss a few cards that are just made for dracogenius:

  • Deathtouch equipment. You already mentioned this yourself. To me, if you are playing control, and you run dracogenius, deathtouch equipment are auto-include (especially Basilisk Collar).
  • Chandra's Ignition. 5 dmg to each other creature + a bunch of cards for 5 mana. Pretty good deal.
  • Dismiss into Dream. Similar to deathtouch.
  • Sigil of Sleep. Draws cards nd gets rid of creatures.

Have a look at my list if you have the time: Niv-Mizzet, Passive Ping-Win

thanks for ya Feedback, i really appreciate it. let me come down to the cards:

  • deathtouch-equips: i need those and i am searching for them. i live in Germany and i wonder myself how hard it is to get my hands on it (even ebay) Basilisk Collar is on top of my wanted-list

  • Chandra's Ignition: this card would result in a typical Izzet experiment. 5 damage to each other creature is bad in my list as i try to not hit my own creatures. the fact of drawing cards is nice but inconsistent and dangerous, e.g. 10 creatures on the board will result in 50 cards draw - thats to much, at least as i have many many draw engines. this card would fit more in a firemind-list.

  • Dismiss into Dream: I LIKE! i will have to test it as the cmc7 is very high and my spots up there are already filled. i try to Keep the curve low. well, this card can be gamebreaking of course and i will test it :)

  • Sigil of Sleep: i already tested it and wasn't happy with it. i don't like to bounce creatures when they can be destroyed.

i will have a look at your draco-list later on! :)

Glad you liked some of the tips!

  • I see your point with sigil of sleep. I does have the advantage of dealing with indestructibility + it nets you cards while dealing with threats. But those asvantages might be too situational indeed.
  • On second thought Chandraa's ignition is not that good of a tip in a beatdown deck. However, it only nets you card for each opponent damaged by it, so that would only be one card per opponent.

So i looked at the new cards from Amonkhet and i wanted to know from you, what you think of them for your deck.

I mean cards like As Foretold, Open Into Wonder, Glorybringer and Enigma Drake.

thanks for ya comment :) you will have much fun with this list. i have 5 EDH-decks currently (each one in a different style to Play) and this one is really nice. i love playying it.

let me come down to the Cards you mentioned:

when i see new Cards i always ask myself "what does this Card for this type of deck?" and "are there any better Cards already filling the Slot?".

  • As Foretold: i dont really know if this Card is good or bad. it can be good but i would consider it bad. why? well, casting spells for Zero mana is good of course, but it will Need time to load up. i see it as a Kind of rampspell that i cant use directly and that cant be used for activated abilities. most spells in this deck are already low on cmc and i think this Card isnt worth a Slot in here. we have enough ramp to get a good boardstate.

  • Open Into Wonder: this Card is pretty bad in this deck. we dont care about beiing blocked or unblocked as we Play a control beatdown. we create a boardstate around our battlephases where People wont be able to block anyways. we nuke the table before we start attacking.

  • Glorybringer: 4/4 flying haste for 5cmc is not bad at all. but the effect is bad. we have enough possibilities to do damage or kill creatures. we wont choose to not untap one of our beaters. beside that, we have better creatures filling the upper spots with Kraum, Ludevic's Opus and our Dragons and sphinxes. they all have better effects for us.

  • Enigma Drake: i like him and will Play him in Standard but not in this list. all creatures in this list give us some Kind of Card Advantage or bring some element of destruction and control. this Little guy is just a flying Body with Evasion, but nothing more.

  1. As Foretold: I think you are right. My thought was, that after a couple of rounds you will always have more mana in your turn or even in turns of your opponents, because you can always cast one free spell with that card. And in the late game you can cast once in each of your turns one spell and it doesnt really matter how much that spell costs. Or even the commander if he is really expensive.

  2. Open Into Wonder: Yeah now that you said it like that i see that too. You are completely right. It is really a bad card for your deck.

3/4. Glorybringer Enigma Drake Yeah youre right about them too. :D

What about Sword of Kaldra? I saw that someone mentioned it here and you said it costs too much and that you prefer deathtouch. Maybe thats true but think of it like that. With Deathtouch you cant kill things with indestructible, but with the sword you could do that. Because it says that you remove that card from the game. So maybe one death touch equipment and then that one?

Oh und jetzt merke ich gerade das du aus Deutschland bist. :D Ja ich schicke dir eine PM, wo du Basilisk Collar ohne Probleme bekommen kannst.

well, i try to Keep it in english so other Players will be able to follow our suggestions:

  • As Foretold: it might have to be tested. if you pick one from Booster, test it. if not, dont buy it. it is not worth ist current Price

  • Sword of Kaldra: it is a great Card. it has a really perfect syngery with our commander. i only prefer the deathtouch equips as they are cheaper in cmc and equip-costs and most time you wont need to remove a creature from the game. even if your oppenent plays some graveyard strategies. as Long as someone dont Combine graveyard with recurrring ETB effects it is not necessary. at least dont Forget that this list does not Play any artifact Tutors, so i would not Count on a single artifact within 99 Cards that can remove creatures from the game.
