Modern Horizons Update —June 11, 2019

With Modern Horizons on the horizon (ahem), I've updated the sliver list with 3 of the best new additions.

Out: Blur Sliver, Dormant Sliver & Winged Sliver
In: Cloudshredder Sliver, Lavabelly Sliver & The First Sliver

Real excited to play these spicy new buggers!

Really like what you've done with Overlord! [not so much the counter play but that's personal x)] Took some of the great advice in this and applied it to my own so much thanks for building such a great deck.

I was wondering if there was any reason you didn't include Ashnod's Altar? Is it because you really only want Basal Sliver when Queen is live?

Thank you very much Whaletron, appreciate the kind words of encouragement. You're right, Ashnod's Altar would be a decent addition. Given the combo potential of Basal Sliver, a bit of redundancy would be just fine. Good call.

a few suggestions to help with your tempo:

remove dormant sliver and put in Opaline Sliver similar effect, but no defender! woo!

Animar, Soul of Elements and Bloom Tender both are not slivers, but certainly have useful effects for your slivers (if you can afford them).

it would also seem that using Sliver Lords ( +1/+1 etc) is not needed very much in decks such as this since yo would go wide rather than go tall. so aside from sliver leigon, which is too good to not include, i would get rid of the other sliver lords.

I would also argue that if you have sliver queen in your deck, you should also have thorncaster in there for the sake of additional utility. think of it this way, you swing with a ton of slivers at one player, then you can do that much damage to another player without interruption.

I would further argue that Magma Sliver is superior to the Firewake Sliver for a few reasons. 1) it is based on the number of slivers, meaning it should be no problem to tap 5 slivers to pump up one sliver for +25/+0, 2) it does not require sacrificing, and 3) it is only one colored mana, which means that despite being more expensive, it is easier for a multi colored deck as well as more efficient with Uzras incubator, and animar should you run him.

however, if yo like having all of these slier abilities that require sacrificing, and you have no problem doing so, possibly consider Dictate of Erebos for clearing the enemy board.

another idea would be the inclusion of Cryptolith Rite or if you can afford/find it, Prismatic Omen for even more rampy!!

overall, i think you have some pretty awesome bones here, you just may want to see if there is a particular strategy you want to follow and tweak this a little more in that direction. good luck mate!!

Thanks for the lengthy comment + feedback GMD_1090, I appreciated the advice! Here's my stream of consciousness thoughts on the suggestions...

Opaline Sliver is decent, but it's card draw effect is conditional on my slivers being targeted. Sure it's a handy deterrent, but it kind of goes against what I want to be doing with the deck (e.g. getting Crystalline Sliver out). Dormant Sliver comes into play when I'm ready to assemble the pieces and draw my deck FTW. He's an awesome combo piece and the defender factor is irrelevant because he'll be sac'd or bounced when the time is right (see the 'shenanigans' portion of the deck description for more detail there).

Animar, Soul of Elements is an amazing card and general, but seems unnecessary. The minor cost reduction is nice, but my avg. CMC is already pretty low and my ramp options are working out as is. He'd just be a beater with no evasion that doesn't synergize with the rest of the deck. Even though she's off theme, Bloom Tender is a great mana dork. If I had one kicking around, I'd consider slapping it in here.

You know, you're not wrong about the mini-lords. The more the deck evolves, the more they're not really necessary. I will definitely consider replacing Muscle Sliver + Sinew Sliver.

I used to run Thorncaster Sliver in here but ended up removing him in favour of combo sliver options. In my experience he wasn't that effective and if Sliver Queen is out, odds are I'm going to be combo'ing without the need for the thorn plings.

I also used to run Magma Sliver and although he looks great on paper, in practice he wasn't so powerful and I could never make good use of him. Firewake Sliver's secondary ability is irrelevant - he's in here for redundancy as another haste enabler.

I like your idea of Dictate of Erebos! I hadn't thought of that card in this deck...Interesting.

Cryptolith Rite is an awesome card and is already in here. Prismatic Omen is also great, but I ended up swapping it out at some point thanks to having an abundance of colour fixing in here already.

I've been playing the deck for years and have the strategies pinned down. Over time it's evolved from a 'go wide' aggro sliver horde to more of a combo oriented deck. Beyond the amazing synergy of the sliver tribe, the thing I like most is the sheer variety in the deck - lots & lots of evil ways to take out your opponents. I still enjoy fine tuning it and I definitely appreciate the opportunity to talk about different deck ideas/philosophies so thanks for that!

Then I shall bow to the master!

I also realized I have used magma sliver when I had sliver legion out, so it was more conditional then I remembered.

Either way, cheers :)

what are your thoughts on Kindred Discovery or Herald's Horn?

September 16, 2017 2:12 p.m.

Forkbeard says... #9

I think they're both great cards! I've included Herald’s Horn in 4 of my other tribal decks, however I couldn't decide what to cut to make room for it in here. I only scored 1 copy of Kindred Discovery and it went straight into my Rashmi elf deck. Similar situation though, I don't know what I'd cut for it. The only C17 card that squeezed it's way in here is the wonderfully versatile Teferi's Protection.

September 16, 2017 3:04 p.m.

van_963 says... #10

you could cut Urza's Incubator for Heralds Horn because most of the creature casting cost is low.

September 17, 2017 2:57 a.m.

Forkbeard says... #11

You raise a good point van_963. Only 6 of the 28 slivers in here would miss Urza's Incubator, and with Herald’s Horn the most expensive non-5 colour sliver would only be 4 mana (Brood Sliver). I think that's a perfectly viable swap! I'm also looking at cutting Sedge Sliver for Kindred Discovery. I have a mere 5 swamps in this deck so unless I slot in Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, odds are he's pretty weak in this particular brew. I think I'll make those changes, cheers.

September 17, 2017 10:06 p.m.

van_963 says... #12

I think you would have to play Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to have a greater chance of getting Sedge Sliver activated and if you do deiced to do that. Also you would have to take a sliver out like Sinew Sliver but i like the current changes you made so far and your points that you bring up as well.

enpc says... #13

The list doesn't look bad, but I think there are a few changes that you could make which would drastically increase its performace.

First off, you have a bunch of cards which just feel like wasted slots:

  • Asceticism - This card draws in a lot of players becuase they want to protect their stuff. But this cards is a trap when trying to make youre deck more competitive. Ultimately it just slows you down as it enforces this concept of making sure your stuff never dies because you want to leave maan open for it etc. Just get used to the fact that your stuff will occasionally die and play faster instead.

  • Mirari's Wake - You already have enough sliver lords and your deck reounds out at 5 cmc anyway. Earlier game ramps is better so you can get you commander down faster.

  • Unnatural Selection - You already have Amoeboid Changeling and let's face it, this is win more.

  • Darkheart Sliver - There are better sac outlets and lifegain is again another one of those traps. If you have a card like Deathrite Shaman where some of its utility is life gain, great. But dedicating slots to it is silly. You're the aggro deck. Just win harder.

  • Ghostflame Sliver - Yes, I see All Is Dust. I would personally say cut both of them. You want a wrath? play Wrath of God. or Toxic Deluge. Wraths should be used when your back is against the wall (or is about to be). Here you're using it as a win more and it's just a waste.

What will make the deck go faster:

  • Low end ramp. Stuff like Birds of Paradise. Or Farseek/Nature's Lore. Remeber, 3 CMC ramp can only ramp your commander by at most 1 turn. You want to ramp early and you want to ramp hard. And the nyou can windmill slam your commander nice and early and start pumping out win conditions.

  • Card advantage. You have a few pieces but you need more. Not one for one tutors, actual card advantage. I have been very impressed with Day's Undoing as a budget Timetwister. Phyrexian Arena is good too. Necropotence is amazing, however takes some getting used to. Mystic Confluence is just solid. I'm also partial to Night's Whisper.

As for good slivers, Acidic Sliver/Cautery Sliver are both good. they give yo ualternate win conditions that don't involve turning sideways.

Damn enpc, really solid suggestions all round. Lots to think about here and I agree with with most of your points - I'll be making some changes based on your feedback. Great comment, this is what Tappedout is all about. Cheers!

Hello, great deck!! This is my blueprint of what Im building!! I was wondering if this is the final update or have you added more!?! Thanks for your time!!

March 15, 2018 2:40 p.m.

Forkbeard says... #16

Thanks very much DieMythic, nice of you to say! This is the current paper list I'm running, but I've been taking a good long look at Unnatural Selection & Bring to Light.

I want to eventually swap BtL for Vampiric Tutor - BtL is a cute way to dig up any of the 3 5-colour sliver legends onto the battlefield, but VT is simply more efficient. I've been told a few times now that Unnatural Selection is win-more and I'm finally starting to see the light there, plus I don't really need Amoeboid Changeling redundancy. It's thematic with Overlord and a funny little trick, but I think I'll be swapping it out for another ramp (Coalition Relic or Skyshroud Claim) or control spell soon (possibly Negate).

So! That's my long winded explanation of where the deck is at right now and the 2 changes I want to make. The land base could certainly be tweaked (fetches, filters & ABUR duals), but what I've got is perfectly functional and serves me well.

Good luck with your build and let me know how it performs for you.

I see you're still updating the deck! If you don't mind I'd love an answer to a few questions.

How does the deck usually win? Is it mostly combo finishes, or beatdown? My group hates consistently winning by combo, but us okay with it sometimes. Will your list work for me?

If you had unlimited budget, how would you change the deck? I'd love to hear about your dream no holding back deck.

Also, I'm very excited for the new slivers! I'm sure you are as well. Thanks for all the hard work you've done.

Hey there tiresias, thanks for the comment. I too am real pumped on the new slivers and am looking forward to slotting a few of them in here.

The paths to sliver victory are varied, but for me personally I win via beatdown more than combo because it becomes a game of 'kill it with fire' as soon Sliver Queen is on the table. Slivers just by themselves stir up a fair amount of hate so just try to get used to it I guess, haha.

I'm actually pretty happy with the current build but if money were no object I'd pimp out the manabase/ramp with fetches, ABUR duals & only the finest rocks. Likewise with the support spells ( Force of Will , Mana Drain et al). If you want to see an example of a seriously tuned sliver deck with all the $$$ cards, check out the The Queen's Egg for inspiration.

So, what about using Intruder Alarm . It would give you a secondary effect similar to that of Paradox Engine .In fact, as it only costs 3, i tend to go for this more often than Paradox Engine . If you have a Manaweft Sliver or Gemhide Sliver , haste enabling sliver, and Sliver Overlord you need 4 mana to potentially drain your deck of slivers, and flood the field.

For some extra draw, i'd also be tempted with maybe a Rhystic Study . You are already playing slivers, might as well be hated for something else too lol. you could also use things like Vanquisher's Banner

I know its pricey, but Yawgmoth's Will it so helpful if you need to get key pieces back from the bin, especially if they are non creature related combo pieces.

Hope this helps, and feel free to have a look at my little hive I call home :)

Those are all solid suggestions Doombeard1984, cheers. I'm planning on cutting Blur Sliver , Dormant Sliver & Winged Sliver to make room for 3 of the new ones (Cloudshredder, Lavabelly + The First). That means 1 less draw option for me so Rhystic Study + Vanquisher's Banner are both appealing, even if The First Sliver is pseudo-draw.

You're right, Intruder Alarm would be killer in here for the reasons you've mentioned and I have a copy I could test out. Yawg-win is an incredible card but I only have 1 copy and it's never leaving my Zombie deck. I'll slot it in here just to try it out for funsies and if it performs I may invest in another copy.

Had a peek at your deck, looks pretty tuned! Some interesting card choices like Jokulhaups & Ugin, the Spirit Dragon , respect.

May 26, 2019 1:20 p.m.

Doombeard1984 says... #23

thanks for the upvote man. Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and Ghostflame Sliver are new ones to the deck this week, which causes problems when you do a one sided exile wrath lol. Also, Jokulhaups with mana producer slivers and Sliver Hivelord tends to make the old scoop phase happen if it resolves. You are so far ahead on mana if this puppy pops that its pretty much insurmountable.

May 26, 2019 8:06 p.m.

Forkbeard says... #24

Oh yeah, that's definitely a swift scoop maneuver if I've ever heard one. I use to run All Is Dust + Ghostflame Sliver in here, always a fun time when that resolved.
