Dungeon Keeper (Semi-Competitive Meren EDH)

Commander / EDH*

Creature (1)

Meren of Clan Nel Toth

I use this site to track my own deck. I believe this is the strongest way to build Meren :)

Sideboard : Cards like Living Wish would replace Cruel Tutor if the group would allow it ;)

Main talent is your typical Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion action. The ways of using Tooth and Nail to get these both on the field and win the game has been a way for G/B to win commander games for a very long time.

New talent is new... With the unbanning of Protean Hulk comes an entirely new slew of combos. The primary one to focus on is simple. Protean Hulk goes into the graveyard/ you win the game. Now if you have a Ashnod's Altar or Phyrexian Altar then the game is easy. Drop Protean Hulk sac him... then the new combo is Mikaeus, the Unhallowed for 6 converted mana cost, and Walking Ballista for 0. Once these are on the field you can deal all the damage you like. If you do not have a sac outlet already on the field fear not! Just fetch your good ol' Body Snatcher and Viscera Seer to reset this power and go for another dive. Not saying Protean Hulk is broken but seriously...... it's broken.

Last but not least, if you are going for a point based system at your LGS. Most of these infinite combos are bad and will do you no good at scoring that free pack of cards! Fear not young one as with Meren of Clan Nel Toth and some other shenanigans you can score yourself as many points as you need! Your primary 2 cards will be Coretapper and Magistrate's Scepter Once these 2 are on the field you can abuse Meren's respawn trigger to earn yourself an infinite amount of turns. Plenty of time to go over your point sheet and earn as many of them as possible.

Anyway, thanks for looking at my Meren. It would mean a lot to me if you could leave a +1 if you found this interesting and leave a comment if you have any thoughts on how to improve the deck!

I use the foil marking to define the cards that are missing. There are other flags but there is no "Got to buy that shit" flag.

new emrakul seems like a decent fit here.

Have you considered adding in any stax effects? I find that utilizing a lot of mana dorks (which can be sacced to gain EXP counters) in combination with effects like Null Rod, Root Maze, Winter Orb, etc is very effective. Here's my list if you want to compare.

The Mikaeus and walking Balista combo that you have listed, I think I see what you were aiming for but it would not deal damage to opponent because walking balista gets the +1/+1 from Mikaeus...

Not Sure if i just missed something or what. Nice list though.

although it would be a good way to get the Experience counters... sorry for the multiple comments.

Legend06 You have to have a way to sacrifice the walking ballista for the combo to work. You cast Mike first then walking. Walking comes out on the field as a 1/1 creature. You sac it, and Mike brings it back as a 1/1 creature with a +1/+1 counter on it. Remove the counter for damage/ sac it again/ rinse-repeat.

fair enough. Still looks like a fairly solid deck. I've always been a fan of the Green black sac decks... What about possibly Running Attrition?

May 16, 2017 9:28 a.m.

arkstudios says... #15

Legend06 Actually pulled it out and it's in limbo right now. With this deck setup I can't find a reason to put it in the 99. As it's a great card by itself but does not enable to benefit my deck in any way right now. It's only real power would be if I played Avenger of Zendikar and used it to kill a bunch of creatures with my tokens. Then again I can just do some Merciless Executioner / Fleshbag Marauder cycling to do a similar thing.

May 16, 2017 10:53 a.m.

Phyrexian Delver is another piece for the protean hulk combo if you draw balista or it gets removed or whatever. Also just a great card.

AzrielBarakiel Yes I've looked at this card a few times and I'm started to really be blocked on adding things to the 99. Strong card though.

Nice list! Have you considered running Null Rod, Winter Orb, and some more mana dorks? Along with Contamination you can really get some nice, asymmetrical resource hate going on. My list runs the same Protean Hulk/Body snatcher line, but heavier on the stax.

how about mortal combat?

May 18, 2017 6:14 p.m.

arkstudios says... #20

cyan10101 It is a pretty awesome card but I only run 26 creatures and no way to mass mill myself to make mortal combat any kind of actual win condition. Would be great otherwise.

May 19, 2017 12:09 a.m.

You don't need a sac outlet for Walking Ballista combo, it comes out as a 0/0. It will die on its own after removing

May 19, 2017 7:16 p.m.

arkstudios says... #22

RavynTheReaper If you combo Walking Ballista off of Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. WalkingB will come out on the battlefield as a 1/1 creature. If you sac it, it comes back again as a 1/1 creature with an extra +1+1 on it. Use the +1+1 to deal 1 damage to target player or creature/ sac it/ repeat.

When Protean Hulk goes into the graveyard and gives you 6 cmc of tutor'd creatures. Mike Ballista is the best option by far.

How competitive are you trying to make this? IS this for 1 on 1 play, or group games? What are some of the decks you are facing doing that stop you? I have some suggestions of cards to think about changing, but I don't know if you need them in your deck to fight something in your meta.

Is Selvala, Heart of the Wilds producing in your deck? It doesn't seem like she would be, because you only have 7 creatures with over 3 natural power, so I imagine you are usually netting 2 additional mana from tapping her. With your creature power curve so low I wouldn't think you were drawing off her first ability that often. Try seeing how often people draw from her besides you and how often you tap her for more than 2 extra mana.

With only 12 EtB triggers, how much use are you getting out of Panharmonicon and Conjurer's Closet?

Do you mainly Body Snatcher when you are going for the win? Without a way to get it back from exile, are the 1 less CmC and no life loss better than running Phyrexian Delver that you can recur if someone stops your win?

May 21, 2017 9 a.m.

arkstudios says... #24

MxdDrnk75Body Snatcher is what makes the new Protean Hulk unbanning so strong. As you can have hulk hit the graveyard by himself with 0 other cards on the field or in your hand and still pull off the full combo. Phyrexian Delver is a great card and I may pick one up eventually for the deck as general backup.

The rest of the cards you've mentioned are actually just strong Meren cards in general. This deck is about as strong as Meren can get "imo" but when I'm playing with friends or in a LGS I can choose not to just walk over people. It's fun to wood elves a Panharmonicon, then Conjurer's Closet it at end of turn to drop 4 lands in a turn. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds like you said adds very little value to the deck over all. However dropping her early can give you 2 or 3 extra mana if you need it. She may get dropped one day for the Delver above or some other green mana ramp card instead.

Thank you for the good comments man :)

Man o man, I absolutely love this Meren list! Deserves a solid +1 in my book. I wish I could afford some of the cards you're using, haha :) As for advice on additions, well, I'm not sure I have any save maybe Hecatomb. I use it in my Meren deck and it comes as a surprise to most of my opponents. Speaking of which, could you comment on my Meren deck as well? Would appreciate it. It's called: Meren's Returning Army.

No one here is going to talk about Evolutionary Leap?

May 30, 2017 5:40 p.m.

arkstudios says... #27

ZendikariWol it's a great card. I still own one but the problem we have now is that it's only 99 cards and I simply do not have room for it :) If I did have room, it also wouldn't be for Leap :(

May 31, 2017 2:45 a.m.

ZendikariWol says... #28

I would suggest dropping Sanguine Bond, how much life are you gaining in a turn? I'd guess not much.

May 31, 2017 10:56 a.m.

arkstudios says... #29

ZendikariWol it's not used for lifegain. It's used with Exquisite Blood to go infinite. Assuming someone does some targeted deck exile; I need more than 1 option to win

What about Greater Good? That card is amazing in most iterations of Meren Decks.

I would say to add more spot removal of some kind. I ran a Meren deck that infuriated my friends (reanimate a Void Winnower and durdle with Spore Frog until I could infinite persist combo with Melira) and the moment my friends began running any form of graveyard hate, the deck does almost nothing because the majority of the cards read "when x is put into the graveyard, x happens" Something as simple as an Anafenza can just sit on the field and as long as they have some little mana dorks, sacrifice effects wont edict her off the field. As I can see, you have 2 spot removals and one and half board wipes (BSZ is a half because of the larger mana requirement to kill the fatties.)

I still love the idea of the deck, but something as simple as a rest in piece can essentially go unanswered from your deck because of the lack of spot removal.

I would say Abrupt Decay and Beast Within are solid inclusions just as catch-all answers

PickleNutz says... #33

Walking Ballista is actually an Infinite combo when paired with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. It works entirely on +1/+1 counters, there's no need to sacrifice it. I saw that conversation in the comments. Triskelion on the other hand you would be forced to kill because he enters as a 1/1 with counters on him. So, Walking Ballista is actually a better combo choice.

Both receive the +1/+1 from Mikaeus, but there's a way around that, that really helps. Use a board wide -1/-1 effect.

July 7, 2017 5:58 a.m.

PickleNutz says... #34

Night of Souls' Betrayal is one that I can think of. If you manage to get it on board the same turn you have Ballista and Mikaeus, it's a game over. Unlimited direct damage.

July 7, 2017 6:05 a.m.

PickleNutz says... #35

I do suppose with Triskelion you can also just target it with its own damage, same for Ballista. So in the end they're both equally good.

July 7, 2017 6:12 a.m.

Aiding says... #36

Well, I don't know if Walking Ballista and Triskelion are equally as good. Triskelion enters with 3 (or 4) +1/1 counters (technically a 5/5 if it had undying and the +1/1 from Mike). It would be able to shoot the opponent a couple times, then shoot itself for the last one point, die, and then come back.

Walking Ballista would come in as a 2/2 (+1/1 from mike, + undying counter) so it wouldn't be able to shoot anything without a sacrifice outlet to kill it because it would need to use the only 1/1 counter on it to kill itself.

Technically, they do the same general concept, but ballista only can do it with a sacrifice outlet. Trisk can do it by itself.

Upvote for the Meren alter. You have good taste in art.

Odric_Magnusson Thank you :)

July 7, 2017 8:31 p.m.

How has Torment of Hailfire worked for you? Is it better or worse than Exsanguinate in your opinon? And do you need both?

Would a discard outlet be useful, Putrid Imp maybe? Discarding vorinclex (for example) early game and reanimating it seems useful

Fierce Empath is great with Woodland Bellower. It finds the bellower and protean hulk.

How has Engineered Explosives worked for you?

I assume you know you have an infinte mana combo in your deck as well. cabal coffers, 5 swamps, deserted temple and rings of brighthearth and basalt monolith and rings. The reason i ask is because it doesn't seem like you need the combo very much. Inifinte colorless is only really good in exsanguinate or torment of hailfire. If you're looking for cuts rings might be a place to look at.

July 27, 2017 9:46 p.m.

Aiding says... #40

I personally think the rings combo just happens to be there. You can rings a strionic resonator for triple triggers, Some creatures just have good activated abilities, etc.
